A knight's tale

Setting

Slice of old Valletta

Built for the fallow years of a prominent naval commander and Knight of Malta in the 16th century, Romègas Hotel is exactly the kind of residence we’d want to retire to, with a rooftop pool, a restaurant prioritising the finer things in life (caviar, steak, lobster). Impeccable additions span contemporary Maltese artworks to terrazzo floors and the joys of modern plumbing, all wrapped up within the 500-year-old limestone walls of this historic palazzo.

Valletta
VLT1454
Malta

Romègas Hotel is in the heart of Valletta’s immaculately preserved old town, on the charmingly named Old Bakery Street.

Planes

Malta’s international air hub welcomes arrivals from all over Europe and beyond. The drive time from here to the hotel should take less than 20 minutes. Hotel transfers can be arranged on request (starting from €70 one-way), depending on the size of vehicle and number of passengers.

Automobiles

Valet parking is available for a flat fee of €30 and needs to be booked in advance. You won’t need wheels for getting around the centre, but they might come in handy for further-afield island exploration. App-hailed cabs are readily available on the island, too.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’ll be right in the midst of Valletta’s historic centre, which has been perfectly preserved over the centuries. Head up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens on the two-tier Saints Peter and Paul Bastion, which dates back to the 1560s, or visit St John’s Co-Cathedral, a Baroque beauty built by the Order of St John in the 16th century. You can sail over to the Three Cities of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua, or just admire them from this side of Valletta’s Grand Harbour. The hotel team can organise wine tastings, cookery and pottery classes, and private tours of various cultural sights. Once you’ve explored the capital, see more of the island — a wise starting point is the fortified inland mediaeval village of Mdina, but it’s also worth heading to Attard and locating Villa Bologna, especially if you're a fan of ceramics.

Local restaurants

For a special occasion — or if you just feel in the mood for a truly spectacular meal regardless of what day it is— head to acclaimed British chef Simon Rogan’s ION Harbour restaurant for multi-course Michelin-starred dining, where the views of the water are almost as good as the food; engagements are commonplace. More casual but no less delicious is Muza, within the halls of the National Community Art Museum, handy for a post-visit lunch or dinner. Set in a former home on Old Theatre Street, Risette ensures the spectacle of dinner lives up to its address, with a passionate Maltese chef at the helm and seasonal produce in rotation.

Local cafés

Claim one of the street-side tables at the historic Caffe Cordina, established in 1837, to break up your scenic but stamina-testing sightseeing .

Local bars

The Grand Harbour is Valletta’s sundowner aspect of choice — you’ll be able to admire it all from the lofty positioning of The Rooftop, where the cocktails flow until late most nights.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in Malta and unpacked their Mediterranean wardrobe, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Romègas Hotel in Valletta…

You’re never far from history in Valletta, Malta’s ancient capital, founded by the Knights of St John in the 16th century. At Romègas Hotel in the heart of the old city, you can stay within the old limestone walls of a 500-year-old palazzo. The residence was the latter-years retreat of Mathurin Romegas, one of the most distinguished Knights of the Order of St John, who had an illustrious career of naval leadership. We can see it would have been a happy retirement here, even if the rooftop pool and slick, moodily lit restaurant weren't installed until half a millennia later.

The bones of the building have been preserved, with more modern additions including marble bathrooms, terrazzo floors and artworks created by contemporary Maltese artists. Some of the rooms overlook a courtyard; others have traditional balconies poised above the beautiful streets of Valletta, which you can admire, unlike the original owner, without a care for strategy in sight.
