Poolside

Post-alpine adventure, recoup with some gentle lengths in the spa’s heated indoor pool (open 7am to 10pm) — or drift off on a pillowy day-bed.

Spa

Counting sheep is out at Roki. The hotel’s spa has a dedicated sleep concierge, plus three types of treatment, each aimed at all-senses unwinding. In ‘Rituals’, tailored massages, facials and exfoliations are used in tandem for top-to-toe relaxation. Opt for the signature ‘Reset’ and you’ll be given a self-care kit (with essentials such as a bath soak, sleep mist and bottle of Pinot Noir) and instructions for in-suite pampering. To reach new heights with your relaxation, go for a Rewild — a secretive wellness experience that unfolds in the South Island wilderness, accessible only by helicopter. And if you’re still having trouble nodding off, then try tuckering yourself out with a circuit of the spa’s Jacuzzi, ice bath, sauna and 24-hour gym.

Packing tips

Your outdoorsy gear will depend on the season, but you’ll want a head for heights year-round — the concierge team have some dizzying helicopter expeditions up their sleeves.

Hotel restaurant

Essence is the hotel’s fine-dining restaurant, where head chef Paul Froggatt brings Continental elan to contemporary New Zealand cuisine. Both the tasting and à la carte menus tap into the seasonal rhythms of the South Island, letting local flavours, such as king crab and Fiordland venison, shine. 

Set on a glass-encased balcony, the Terrace serves elegant seafood against a painting-like landscape. The windows open in warmer months, welcoming fresh alpine air as you deliberate between the market fish and langoustine tart.

Hotel bar

A pair of art deco chandeliers cast a warm glow across the Library Bar, where head mixologist Caroline whips up sophisticated cocktails. And there’s a wine cellar and elevated bar snack menu you'll want to make inroads into.

Last orders

Breakfast is served Essence from 7am to 10.30, and dinner at both restaurants is from 6pm with last seatings at 8.30pm. The Terrace also serves lunch from noon to 2pm. The Library Bar is open from noon to midnight.

Roki Collection Queenstown faces the peaks of the Remarkables on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, a two-minute drive from the centre of town.

Planes

The hotel is around a 20-minute drive from Queenstown Airport. Staff can arrange transfers on request (NZ$250 for up to two people, and NZ$300 for between three and six people).

Automobiles

The hotel has a car that can take you into town and the Four- and Seven-Bedroom suites include a private chauffeur service. But your own wheels will be useful for charting adventures further afield — plus you’ll pass some jaw-dropping scenery driving to and around the region. There's a private carpark with free valet service at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

In New Zealand’s adventure capital, a helicopter trip over the Southern Alps and a jet boat ride down Shotover Canyon’s rapids are two to tick off your white-knuckle checklist. In winter, the Remarkables are a hotspot for skiing (including heli-skiing) and snowboarding. Come the warmer months, hit the hiking and mountain biking trails that wind their way past alpine lakes. When something more mellow is in order, try a tour and tasting at one of Central Otago’s world-renowned wineries. Roki’s concierge team can arrange gentler jaunts, too, including mountainside picnics and private boat trips.

Local restaurants

Yonder is a year-round hit for both its brunch and ivy-clad garden — there are blankets and heaters on standby, so you’ll be nice and toasty as you tuck into your pancake stack, whatever the weather. Down at Steamer Wharf, Public Kitchen and Bar is a cool Italian spot serving handmade pasta right on the water. And if you haven't had your fill of vast lake and mountain views, they form the backdrop to contemporary Kiwi fine dining at Nest.

Local cafés

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a prettier spot for locally roasted coffee and a fresh-baked bite than Beach Street Café’s waterfront terrace. Serious bean buffs should make a beeline for Mackenzie Coffee Co, a specialty espresso bar with its roots firmly in the South Island.

Local bars

A roaring fire, plenty of local pinot and a stellar whisky collection set the cockles-warming tone at Bardeaux. At Eichardt’s Bar, the eye-candy scenery and elegant cocktails are served with a side of local history — the site was once home to the first ever building in Queenstown.

On the shore of Lake Wakatipu, placid water stretches out to pine forest and the rugged peaks of the Remarkables — with Mother Nature pulling her weight like this, it would be easy to rest on your laurels.  

That’s not how Roki Collection Queenstown rolls, though. Naturally, those alpine views are flaunted from every possible angle, but equal care has been given to the minutiae. Spa treatments are personalised and innovative — and, in some cases, reached by helicopter. And on restaurant menus, the landscape’s fine produce meets cherry-picked international flavours.

You're in New Zealand’s outdoorsy capital, and the hotel’s Rolls Royce is on hand for dinner in town. But thanks to Virginia Fisher’s deft design, an in-suite date with a glass of pinot and your holiday paperback is just as appealing.
