Setting

Private estate escape

Flock to Rest + Wild Shropshire Hills on the Downton Hall Estate and roost in one of four rustic-luxe cabins, before spreading your wings on rural rambles or trips to nearby market town, Ludlow. A little birdie told us there’s no WiFi, but analogue entertainment comes in the form of an alfresco bath tub and a countryside-gazing fire pit. And you can pre-order locally sourced drinks or food hampers to ensure your nest is well-feathered…

Need to know

Rooms

Four cabins.

Check–Out

10.30am. Check-in, 4pm; both are flexible, for an extra charge (£30).

More details

Rates at Rest + Wild Shropshire Hills are cabin-only, but you can pre-order food hampers for an extra charge. There’s a two-night minimum stay during the week; a three-night minimum applies over weekends.

Also

Unfortunately, these country cabins are not suited to guests with reduced mobility.

Please note

You can also pre-order a bunch of British flowers to enliven and perfume your cabin. They’ll last beyond your stay and you can keep the glass vase, plus you’ll score points in the romance department.

At the hotel

At each cabin: outdoor bath tub, fire pit, deckchairs, picnic table, wood-burning stove with logs, kindling and firelighters; kitchenette with a gas hob and fridge; two USB charging points, games and books, minibar, tea- and coffee-making kit, and Wildsmith Skin bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Named after local birds, each intimate cabin at Rest + Wild Shropshire will be your love nest. There are four in the retreat’s flock: take forest bathing literally in Sparrow with a soak in the woodland-set bath tub; the views of Clee Hill from Nightingale are worth singing about; consider the verdant fields rolling out from Robin as your lawn, and a majestic oak tree acts as a sun-sheltering parasol over Wren’s fire pit and deckchairs. Up the romantic ante and pre-order a bouquet of seasonal, British-grown flowers; they’ll spruce up your cabin and last long after your stay as a souvenir from your nature-swathed sojourn.

Packing tips

Some marshmallows for toasting on your fire pit, and your cosiest threads for sunrise-watching or stargazing.

Also

Switching off comes naturally: there’s no WiFi here, but you’ll still get decent phone signal. There are two USB charging points in your cabin, and you can pre-book a power bank with regular sockets for your camera or laptop.

Pet‐friendly

Two canine companions are welcome in your cabin for £25 each a stay, just let staff know in advance. Dogs should be kept on a lead at all times. See more pet-friendly hotels in Shropshire.

Children

Welcome, but this low-frills stay might be better suited to grown-ups. You’ll have to bring your own baby cot or small travel bed, and the retreat can provide free towels for an additional guest (extra sheets are £15).

Sustainability efforts

These timber-framed cabins are powered by solar panels and the food hampers spotlight all-local suppliers.

Food and Drink

Hotel restaurant

You’ll find Monmouth Coffee, olive oil, salt and pepper in your kitchenette, as well as a gas hob and fridge — the foundations for fireside suppers or alfresco lunches. You can also book top-notch food hampers ahead of your arrival (for an extra cost). In the breakfast boxes (choose from meat or vegetarian), you’ll find Clee Hill eggs, Pimhill muesli, a loaf of bread, fresh orange juice and other day-starting delights; the meat option also has sausages and rashers of bacon. For lingering lunches or starlit dinners, opt for a sourdough pizza, fresh pasta or Spanish paella kit, each comes with locally sourced ingredients and a recipe card.

Hotel bar

You can add bottles of Terlingham wine or local-to-Ludlow beers and ciders to your booking, and your well-heeled hosts will make sure your fridge is suitably stocked for your arrival.

Address
Rest + Wild Shropshire Hills
Downton Hall Estate
Shropshire
SY8 3DX
United Kingdom

Rest + Wild Shropshire Hills’ cabins are dotted across verdant fields in the private Downton Hall Estate near Ludlow, in history-steeped Shropshire.

Planes

Birmingham Airport is a 90-minute taxi ride from the estate; Bristol and Manchester airports are just over two hours’ away by road.

Trains

Ludlow station is a 10-minute drive from the estate, but there isn’t a taxi rank at the station so you’ll want to book a cab ahead of arrival. Rail services call here from Manchester, and London’s Paddington and Euston, with a connection at Crewe or Newport in Wales.

Automobiles

A set of wheels will enhance your Shropshire stay, with quaint towns and hilly hikes a short drive away. The cabins are at least a three-hour drive from London and Birmingham is 90 minutes’ away by road. Each cabin has a designated parking space from where it’s a short, uphill walk to your cabin: a trolley and torches are provided for ferrying luggage and finding your way.

Worth getting out of bed for

We imagine savouring the solitude at Rest + Wild Shropshire Hills will be your preferred activity du jour, but your country co-ords are also primed for rural romps and market-town mooching. Boot up for rambles across your Downton Hall host’s vast estate, or hike heather-covered hills in the Carding Mill Valley or Mortimer Forest. You can eye up Clee Hill from your cabin, or cycle the 35-mile circuit to it from Ludlow for a closer look (staff can help arrange bike hire). If you’re feeling flush-faced after hiking and biking, cool off with a wild swim in the River Teme or Carding Mill reservoir. A historic market town with a gastronomic reputation, Ludlow is your charming neighbour, and its brewery, Norman-age castle and open-air market are worth touring.

Local restaurants

Traditional British flavours are given a modern makeover at the Clive Arms, where the farm-fresh produce is local to Ludlow. Comfort food takes the form of Sunday roasts and hearty pies at 14th-century pub the Church Inn, helmed by chef Cedric Bosi. You’ll eat like a king at Chapter 66: seasonal plates are served up at this bright bistro, set in the heart of the history-rich Ludlow Castle.

Local cafés

It doesn't matter if you woke up on the wrong side of the bed: the internationally inspired brunches at waterfront café CSons will remedy that, as will their sweet treats and River Teme views. Get your caffeine fix at Harp Lane Deli, and stock up on pastries and pantry items while you’re at it (but the former might not last the drive back).

Local bars

Hunker down with a pint at Ludlow cornerstone the Rose & Crown; it’s traditional to a tee with its exposed beams, original features and fireplace.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from these countryside cabins in the West Midlands and unpacked their muddy boots and local ales, a full account of their arcadian break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Rest + Wild Shropshire Hills…

Lo-fi living comes naturally at Rest + Wild Shropshire Hills: each Scandi-style cabin is set in its own forest-fringed field, where pastoral pleasures take centre stage. Off-grid stays are enhanced by painting-worthy picture windows (positioned for prone contemplation from your king-size) and an absence of WiFi. But you’ll be grateful for this tech-free twist, especially as birdsong soundtracks your open-air soaks, reading breaks are warmed by the fire pit, and alfresco meals (which can be rustled up from a selection of high-end food hampers) are backdropped by Welsh Marches countryside.

As disconnected as you may feel at this back-to-nature estate, Shropshire’s top sights are within close range: Ludlow’s historic charms include its namesake castle, traditional pubs and long-standing market; the mediaeval Stokesay Castle is up the road, and the Shropshire Way walking route weaves past the estate towards the Welsh border. You’ll set the pace at this upscale retreat, and we have a feeling it’ll be suitably gentle.
