Our favourite rooms

Even the entry-level rooms are surprisingly spacious. We love the QT Corner Room’s bath tub positioning – it’s right up next to the window, so you can multi-task and watch the city as you soak. The higher-level rooms have the best views out over Melbourne; the QT Loft couples these with high ceilings, and more of the hotel’s signature colourful cushions and hanging lamps.

Top Table

Pick a pew overlooking the open kitchen to spy the chefs at work.

Dress Code

All-black for effortless Parisian elegance in Pascale; and anything goes in Hot Sauce – full Harajuku-style won’t raise any eyebrows.

Hotel restaurant

Pascale takes its Parisian-style cue from the building’s cinema heritage, with dimmed lights, blue carpets and plush seats, and offers Asian-fusion dishes. Breakfast is also served here – guests can expect flavours from around the world, including Levantine shakshuka, Indonesian nasi goreng and a full English cooked on a wood fire, with bratwurst, chorizo, asparagus and sourdough.

Hotel bar

The bar in Pascale showcases similar Gallic charm, with a wall of artfully positioned plates, a soundtrack of French hip-hop and hundreds of spirits suspended above the counter – all the more helpful for crafting unique cocktails, such as the Oaked QT Old Fashioned or pineapple and sage Caipirinha. There’s also a green-tiled bar up on the roof, with illuminated tables out on the decking and an excellent G&T selection.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 6.30am until 11am. Lunch is on offer between noon and 2.30pm; and dinner is 6pm until 11pm. The bar calls time at midnight (1am up on the rooftop).

Drop a pin to find the centre of Melbourne and it’ll probably land on this hotel, which sits in the heart of the city’s CBD, just south of Chinatown.

Tullamarine Airport is just over half an hour away by car; the hotel can arrange transfers from AU$85 each way. The airport is served by both international and domestic airlines; Qantas, Tigerair and Jetstar all run frequent flights to here.

Trains

Both the Melbourne Central tram and Metro stops are within a 15-minute walk of the hotel. The NSW TrainLink (www.nswtrainlink.info) connects Melbourne with Sydney – but there’s no such thing as a short hop in this vast country (average journey time: 11 hours and 30 minutes.

Automobiles

Melbourne is a straightforward city to navigate by car – and there’s valet parking (AU$70 a night) when you arrive.

Worth getting out of bed for

Thanks to its central setting, QT Melbourne is close to all of the action in Australia’s second city – including the National Gallery of Victoria, Federation Square and the Queen Victoria Market. Find an endless array of eating options along Hardware Lane, with its French, Italian and North American offerings. Stop for a breather in the State Library Victoria to admire the cavernous space and check to see if any exhibitions are being held. See the city from above on a hot-air-balloon ride or follow the curvaceous Great Ocean Road for some staggeringly beautiful coastal views. There are no less than five different wine regions beyond the city limits, so assign a designated driver and get sipping. Perhaps stylish Polperro Winery in the Mornington Peninsula or Hanging Rock Winery in the Macedon Ranges, where you can pick up a gourmet picnic that'll end far less ominously than the film that made the rock famous. In Yarra Valley, startlingly named Cannibal Creek Vineyard is an immensely pleasant cellar door with a wide range of grapes: from cab sav to merlot. Most wineries boast top-form locavore dining, too.

Local restaurants

Take a culinary trip through Asia: close by there are teppanyaki and izakaya spots, Vietnamese pho joints, diners serving dim sum and Thai and Burmese tapas to try. For the best Italian in town, it has to be family-run Cecconi’s on Flinders Lane for all the pappardelle and bistecche you can manage. Up in Fitzroy, try Cutler & Co on Gertrude Street, where you can marvel at the metal-factory heritage as well as the menus. Embla on Russell Street has fun with flavours, serving chicken with creamed corn and dried citrus, cod roe with cumin and stracciatella with anchovies and rosemary. Plus, there's an interesting curation of wines to wash dishes down.

Local bars

Sure, wine is the watchword around here, but Melbourne impresses with cocktails too. Seek out the low-lit Black Pearl, where a crack team of fresh talent shake up locally crafted spirits into tasty sippers. Above Board is a secretive minimalist drinking den with just 12 seats and no standing space, so you might need a modicum of luck to experience it; but, if you make it in, you'll be well rewarded. And, with shaggy-haired sofas, plenty of exposed brick and an enticing smoky scent from its grill, quirkliy cool Mjølner is where style-conscious vikings socialise.

Upon exiting the Uber, it becomes clear that the QT Melbourne is a master of the first impression. It’s like stepping onto the set of Cirque du Soleil, but with way better outfits.

The staff all have been infused with something cheerful (in a non-creepy way). They combine the helpfulness of an eager retail assistant with the reassurance of a childhood friend you haven’t seen in years. Which is to say it works very well. Every single one of the QT’s team never fails to be chatty, warm and professional all at the same time.

The space itself is the stuff that industrial-aesthetic dreams are made of. Seriously, find me a tiny corner or piece of furniture that doesn’t fit. You won’t. The hotel has been painstakingly curated, and coherence flows from ground floor to rooftop. The colours artfully bleed into each other at every touchpoint – be it napkins in the restaurant or cushions at the bar, the whole place is pleasingly consistent.

But this definitely isn’t all cookie-cutter monochromes and the ‘seen that’ marble-chic that we’re used to: the whole place is littered with kinky little details that add personality and quirk. Don’t believe me? Look closely at the wallpaper in the dining room.

In terms of location, this place is it. Smack bang in the city, but the good bit of the city; the bit where you’re still crawling distance from everything you need, but when you look out the window from bed in the morning (and more on the beds later), you’re greeted by a canopy of grand leafy goodness. It’s mere footsteps from the boutique shops of Little Collins Street, countless Parisian-style alleyway eateries and just next door to a brewery (the winning trifecta in my city-stay book). And if you don't want to stray too far from the nest, the rooftop bar gives you sweeping views of the Melbourne skyline without the usual business crowd that such city-spying spots tend to draw. Instead, it’s a varied bunch: hipsters, models, parents… This bar manages to pull off seamless service and a killer Insta backdrop without pretension.

And also within the nest, you’ll find Pascale Bar & Grill, a Euro style bistro with a wine list worth staying in for. But beyond the liquid menu, the crispy profiteroles were the standout. Zesty and lemony, buttery and chocolatey, sweet and crispy and textured and creamy and toffee topped – they’re everything you could ever want from a dessert. I’ll stay again (and again) just for these alone.

So, anyway, yes, the beds… In terms of sleeping off the food coma, you’re in good hands. The beds are heavenly, made I assume with angel-wing feathers and with enough pillows to bring down a small ship (perfect for propping yourself up in the morning with a cup of tea or coffee from to the in-room machine). The room is extremely spacious; its high ceilings and windows bring about a unbelievable sense of calm and tranquility, especially amongst the hustle of the city. I want to live in this room and never leave, spending my time equally between the bed and the bath. Oh, yeah: the bath. Suffice to say, if I ever go missing this is where you’ll find me. I’m really fussy with baths; I crave an incredibly complex equation of curve, depth, size and slope. Somehow the bath in the QT King wins the gold medal in all of the above, and just general liveableness.

All in all, this hotel is an absolute winner for romantic escapes, work trips and pretty much any other kind of stay. We’ll definitely be back and, in the meantime, I’ll be trying to turn myself in a mermaid so that I really can live in that bath permanently…
