Our favourite rooms

Waking to the morning light dancing across the water lends the Lakeside Cabins a particular magic. That said, we also loved the views from the elevated Knoll Cabins, where the nearby lake twinkles through the pines. Note that booking a purse-friendly King Hideaway is glamping in its purest form, with a shared bathhouse a walk from your bedroom-only cabin.

Poolside

Lined with gleaming stone, white loungers and vintage Tuuci parasols, the pool at Prospect Berkshires pops against its forest backdrop. Inviting year-round dips, its salt water is kept at a very inviting 29 degrees celsius.

Spa

Although there’s no dedicated spa area, four saunas (two lakefront and two in the pool house) are at hand; book your private session when you check in to secure a soothing spell in its cedar-scented care.

Packing tips

A desire to switch off and a love of the outdoors are all you need to enjoy this wholesome lake resort.

Also

Plans are afoot to add in-room massage and facial treatments over the summer months.

Pet‐friendly

Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome in Knoll Cabins for a nightly charge of $100. See more pet-friendly hotels in Berkshires.

Children

Little Smiths are more than welcome at Prospect Berkshires and, while there’s little specifically aimed at kids, acres of forest and lake provide ample scope for entertainment. Only one room type — the Knoll Cabin — caters to families of four.

Sustainability efforts

Steps taken by Prospect Berkshires towards their net-zero goal include composting all food waste, extensive recycling and the use of sustainable and recyclable materials wherever possible. The water system also integrates rainwater harvesting, all tap water is drinkable and plastics are kept to a minimum.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Grab a corner spot on the wraparound screened-in porch, where it feels as if you’re suspended over the water. That said, a table next to one of the huge picture windows will still feel like a win.

Dress Code

While outdoorsy threads will do for most of your nature-immersed stay, break out something a little more date-night than day-hike for dinner.

Hotel restaurant

Although completely rebuilt (bar the original timber frame), The Cliff House retains an airy, wood-scented rusticity, softened with the occasional splash of velvet upholstery. Perched on the waterfront, it offers dining accompanied by gloriously sweeping lakefront vistas. A seasonally inspired menu of pintxos, croquettes and tapas-style small plates point to the chef’s Iberian adventures, and are joined by heartier fare such as grilled monkfish and NY strip steak.

Hotel bar

Illuminated by vintage ’70s Murano glass lamps and framed by a botanically inspired ceiling mural, the zhuzhed-up bar anchors one end of Cliff House. The cocktail list is tightly curated, with two thoughtful zero-proof creations alongside signature drinks. Ale fans are treated to an accomplished choice of beers, most sourced from local craft breweries.

Last orders

The kitchen closes at 9pm, but the bar stays open until 11pm provided the drinks are still flowing.

Worth getting out of bed for

Over the summer months at Prospect Berkshires, you’ll likely be spending much of your time drawn to life on the lake. The resort has kit for paddle-boarding and kayaking (first come, first served) or you could just take the plunge after a sauna session. Splashing about Prospect Lake is a wonderful way to cool off embraced by nature’s calm (motorised activities are strictly a no-no). If silt between your toes isn’t your bag, snag a sunlounger at the eye-catching swimming pool, where drinks are whisked to your sunbathing spot and the tennis/pickleball court is only steps away.

The 30-acre pine-carpeted resort is ribboned with nature paths; you’re also within stomping distance of some of New England’s prized hiking routes. A nearby section of the Appalachian Trail offers some spectacular rambling, or scale the 1,642ft peak of Monument Mountain — rumoured to have inspired Herman Melville when he was penning Moby Dick.

Vintage shopping aficionados will find plenty to trawl though in the nearest town, Great Barrington, with its slew of indie boutiques, second-hand vinyl stores and thrift outlets. In winter, the Berkshires transform into a snowy wonderland. Catamount and Butternut Mountains are just a short drive away, offering skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Closer to home, as conditions allow, there is ice skating on the lake.

Local restaurants

Just minutes from Prospect Berkshires, the Old Mill in South Egremont serves contemporary New England cuisine by candlelit in an old grist-mill. Also nearby, John Andrews Farmhouse Restaurant offers farm-to-table dining at scenically set outdoor seating, spotlighting whatever regional ingredients are in season.

Local bars

Beloved community hub and music venue, The Egremont Barn combines a casual pub atmosphere with affordable drinks and live music in a historic building — an 18th-century barn to be exact. Another buzzy local favourite is Mooncloud, in the centre of Great Barrington, where botanical cocktails pair temptingly with charcuterie boards.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this forest-ensconced hotel in Massachusetts and unpacked their Berkshire botanicals and New England maple syrup, a full account of their lakeside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Prospect Berkshires in Egremont…

Once a rustic picnicking ground for day-trippers, the whispering white pines of North Egremont are now home to the picturesque lakeside hideaway of Prospect Berkshires. And hidden away it is, tucked into the sylvan Massachusetts highlands. But this only ramps up its blissful sense of remoteness where, ensconced in a cosy cedar-clad cabin (inspired by Danish hyttas and built by Amish carpenters), you awake to the sounds of nature.

Opportunities to lark around on the mirror-like lake, ramble through wildflower meadows or toast gooey s'mores on communal fire pits mean that this grown-up summer camp has fun in abundance, too. Owners Jade-Snow and Ian say they also drew inspiration from the 19th-century New Englander Transcendentalists, who believed in the divinity and restorative qualities of nature. And as days here drift by in a delicious rhythm — swim, stroll, sleep, repeat — you’re sure to leave Prospect Berkshires fully restored (and quietly plotting your return).
