Our favourite rooms

Every suite at the hotel has access to the shared pool, a private plunge pool or at the very least a Jacuzzi, and many of them have sea views. We love the shared swimming pool concept, but with privacy as the buzzword around here, we’re even more taken by the ultra spacious and secluded Superior or Executive suites.

Poolside

In a gentle nod to Venice, the shared pool winds its way between the daybed platforms of the junior suites on either side of the water. Residents of higher category suites can cool off in their own plunge pool.

Spa

The Pietra Calda Hammam & Spa brings a calming, Mediterranean feel to the hotel’s wellness offering, with a traditional hammam at its heart. Warm, pared-back interiors echo the earthy tones of the surrounding island, and treatments draw on local ingredients including olive oil, lavender and rosemary. During the whispering stones ritual, rhassoul clay and laurel oil are combined for your hair while your body is wrapped in a veil of carob scrub and the island's native currants, known as ‘black gold’, to refreshing effect. There’s also a compact gym if the Greek god-bod needs working on.

Packing tips

Bring a waterproof phone pouch: between pool dips and boat trips, your camera roll is going aquatic.

Sustainability efforts

Pierros Verde treads lightly thanks to its durable, locally sourced materials, as well as its energy- and water-saving systems. Solar power, LED lighting, smart irrigation and low-flow showers help keep consumption in check, and locally sourced produce and eco-friendly cleaning products keep things greener behind the scenes. Bathroom products pull their weight, too: Olivia by Papoutsanis uses recyclable dispensers, cutting plastic use and product waste by up to 70 per cent.

There are sequestered seating spaces all over the hotel, but we favour the tables on the veranda upstairs at Verde Ruga for its sparkling sea views.

Hotel restaurant

Verde Ruga restaurant sits a floor above the Kafeteria, granting it panoramic views over the bay, and it’s here you’ll discover a menu of Mediterranean cooking made with Zakynthian produce. Its stone walls, timber beams and olive-grove setting keep things rustic rather than formal, ideal for hearty dishes such as the 24-hour slow-cooked kleftiko lamb with tender buttered vegetables and black garlic. Downstairs, Kafeteria handles breakfast and lunch indoors or out (we recommend the latter). Greek nights, on a Monday, are proving popular — dancing queens, these are for you. 

Hotel bar

The bar shares the space upstairs at Verde Ruga. Here, you’ll find a well-curated wine list from local small-batch vineyards and a pleasing assortment of cocktails.

Last orders

Breakfast is laid out from 7.30am at Kafeteria, which stays open until lunch finishes at 4pm. Food at Verde Ruga is served 6pm to 11.30pm, but the bar and restaurant stay open until 1am.

Pierros Verde Private Suites is a three-minute walk from the beach on the pine-covered hillside of Lithakia above the village of Agios Sostis, at the western end of Laganas Bay on Zakynthos’ south coast.

Planes

Most European hubs have direct flights to Zakynthos Airport, which is a 15-minute drive away; if you’re arriving from the US, flights often require a layover in London, Vienna or Zurich.

Automobiles

Staff can arrange private transfers (€40 one way) for up to four guests, or there are plenty of car-rental booths at Zakynthos Airport. The hotel has free parking right outside its entrance.

Worth getting out of bed for

When you’ve tired of lazing by the pool at Pierros Verde Private Suites, there’s the short stroll down to either Laganas beach to the north or Agios Sostis beach to the south, although we recommend walking a little further to find a quieter spot. From Agios Sostis port, continue across the little wooden bridge to Cameo Island for a swim and views of Laganas Bay, or take a boat out to Marathonisi (Turtle Island), a protected nesting site for loggerhead turtles. Head further south to Keri for the dramatic Myzithres rocks and lighthouse viewpoint, or west to Porto Limnionas and Porto Roxa, where ladders lead into the deep-blue Ionian.  

Inland, the villages of Agalas and Kiliomenos offer a glimpse of rural Zakynthos, and the mountain villages and monasteries around Volimes make for a rewarding drive. Gerakas and Dafni are among the island’s protected beaches, and Zakynthos Town is worth a wander for its Venetian-influenced architecture, museums and churches. Climb to Bochali village afterwards for sweeping views over the town and bay. Wine lovers, Callinico Winery is a 20-minute drive away.

Local restaurants

Votsalo Tavern in Keri has a particularly good view towards Marathonisi, and Diafokereiko and Ampelostrates offer traditional Zakynthian cooking in atmospheric old village buildings. In Vassilikos, Porto Mela is a good choice for seafood by the beach, while O Aderfos tou Kosta serves traditional Greek fare in a leafy courtyard. 

Local bars

For sunset drinks, head up to the village of Bochali, where Movida and Oro Rooftop Bar have far-reaching views over Zakynthos Town and the bay. In the town itself, Base San Marco and Grace are your go-to spots for rooftop drinks with harbour views.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Pierros Verde Private Suites in Greece… 

All over Zakynthos, you’ll see remnants of Venetian influence in some of the architecture, particularly the churches – the island was once known as the ‘Venice of the East’. However, much lot of it was lost in an earthquake in 1952, which also severely damaged the farmhouse that once stood where Pierros Verde Private Suites now resides. Descendants of those farmers bought the land and have re-purposed it into something equally as wholesome, with just a touch more luxury. 

Who are we kidding? A lot more luxury. Each of the 32 suites here are kitted out with, as standard, some sort of water feature, be it a private plunge pool, Jacuzzi, or steps down into a shared pool that in shape (rather than detail) evoke the snaking waterways of Venice. Then there’s the much-lauded Mediterranean restaurant (we’d recommend it over pretty much anywhere else on the island), and the spa, where treatments draw on local herbs for its fragrant infusions, and the hammam, which adds an exotic touch to wellness proceedings. All in all, this is an appealing antidote to the touristy hubs around Zakynthos’ coastline, a space where you’ll find peace, privacy and pleasure in equal measure.
