You won’t find any trace of antlers or brash plaid at upscale Rockies retreat Pendry Park City, where contemporary condo-style residences, a Japanese restaurant and scenic rooftop pool embrace a 21st-century take on the traditional ski lodge. Its unapologetic approach to fun is pleasingly modern, too, with a lively après bar, polished spa and on-the-pulse plaza locale. You may find the hotel shuttle to Main Street redundant, and you won’t need transport to access Park City Mountain either, thanks to a ski-in, ski-out location with lifts in walking distance. Beyond the resort, top-notch day trips await, including national-park hikes and panoramic road trips amidst Utah’s jaw-dropping mountain scenery.

Practicality rules at Pendry Park City, where residences and townhouses with cool-hued contemporary decor, kitchens or kitchenettes, and up to four bedrooms make up the majority of room options across three buildings (linked by a sky bridge). Sleeping arrangements are spelt out in room titles and which you select will be dictated by needs (with king rooms, double doubles and bunk rooms all in the mix); opt for a Peak View to secure superior mountain scenes. The Founder’s Residence, which can be booked with two or four bedrooms, is king of suites, with an open-plan layout that lends itself to entertaining and comes with a broad sun-terrace.
The hotel’s heated rooftop pool, with a backdrop of Wasatch mountain peaks, is Park City’s only alfresco, sky-high swimming spot. The mosaic-tiled pool is divided in two – a hot tub with step-entry at one end, with a separate swimming pool at the other. It’s open from 8am until 10pm and is beside the Pool House bar and restaurant, which has outdoor tables and comes into its own in summer for leisurely dining outdoors.
The hotel’s muted, modern decor extends to Pendry Spa; kick back in the spa lounge, where partitioned seating with footstools sets the scene for relaxation: there are six private rooms for customised face and body therapies, including couple’s treatments; we like the idea of adding warm river stones to our massage order… A long, narrow room of banquet-hall proportions houses an impressive fitness center, kitted out with treadmills, cross-trainers and Peloton bikes, plus all the free weights your muscles can handle.
Daytime threads revolve around the great outdoors here: ski gear and thermals in winter; hiking and biking kit and country-casual attire once the snow has left town.

Interconnecting room options and family-friendly residences mean that Pendry Park City is well set-up for little Smiths, with a kids’ club providing daytime entertainment for children aged five to 12.
Over-fives are best placed to join in the fun at Pinwheel Kids’ Club and enjoy the mountains in winter.
Any of the Double Doubles are good-value options; for space to lounge and a kitchen, opt for a two-bedroom residence. Townhouses have a kids’ bedroom upstairs, giving adults the run of the first floor with a master bedroom off the living room.
Pinwheel Kids’ Club is for five- to 12-year-olds and operates in a dedicated space with planned activities run by childcare professionals. Arts and crafts, indoor games and outdoor play are all on the menu; book (you’ll need to) for morning or afternoon sessions (from $105) or both; a ‘kid’s night out’ option on Friday or Saturday night includes dinner and runs from 4pm until 8pm.
Skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowshoeing; fly-fishing, mountain biking, zip-lining, taking the mountain coaster or luge run – outdoorsy adventures come in many guises at this family-friendly resort.
Children are welcome at the rooftop pool, but there’s no lifeguard and they must be accompanied and supervised.
Disco Pizza is likely to be your children’s first choice: the friendliest of family diners, it comes with an Etch-a-Sketch at the table and the option to use the at-table games console (we won’t tell if you don’t). Après Pendry has a good all-day kids menu, too.
Pinwheel Kids’ Club has you covered, but for little Smiths outside the age range, you’ll need to stick to family time or make your own arrangements.

Four-seater square tables mid restaurant at Kita are at the heart of the action; booths at Disco Pizza feel the most diner-like; all spots at the Pool House are desirable, thanks to the spectacular mountain view.
Casual for Disco Pizza and Pool House; smarter for Kita, where the Asian-influenced decor and menu are your cue to bring out kimono jackets, silk blouses and sakura-print dresses; you’ll want to leave the denim and sneakers in your room.
Kita, a Japanese grill and sushi bar in a light-filled space, dressed in neutral hues with pendant paper lanterns, is Pendry Park City’s main restaurant, open for breakfast and dinner. In summer, the garage doors roll up and its assortment of pale-wood tables and chairs are open to the Utah sunshine. Breakfast is à la carte and as hearty as you choose, from featherlight maple-yoghurt parfaits or fresh fruit and berries to ski-fuelling biscuits and gravy, farmer’s omelet, or apple-pecan pancakes. Ramen bowls, wood-fired steaks and chops, miso-glazed chicken and katsu-fried cauliflower star on the Japanese-meets-American dinner menu. Then there’s the sushi bar, with seats at the counter for front-row views of nigiri, maki and sashimi being freshly prepared. Disco Pizza is a basement diner primed for fun: in a monochrome dining room with poppy-red accents and flashes of neon, you can order margheritas and Hawaians, baked meatball-penne or rigatoni à la vodka, and indulge your inner child by playing with the at-table Etch-a-Sketch and PlayStation console. Beside the rooftop pool, Pool House Bar & Grille is first a bar, second a restaurant, with summer-only tables alfresco on the deck beneath strings of light bulbs; its cuisine is casual American with salads, sandwiches and burgers. In winter, a small menu of ‘bites’ accompanies wine by-the-glass, Apérol-based Canyons Spritzers or Park City pilsner: we love the sound of cheesy-sauce-accompanied pretzel sticks and hummus-topped veggie flatbreads.
A double-height ceiling, designer lighting and surfeit of low-slung sofas and armchairs create a convivial space at Après Pendry – a lobby-lounge-bar beside the ski beach that comes alive once mountaingoers begin to shush home for toe-warming coffees, thirst-slaking Wyoming IPA or celebratory sundowners such as sorel-pimped old fashioneds, Hennessy-based Hunted Bucks or a trad-but-moreish Thomas Collins. There’s often live music on the agenda, and a roaring fire to encourage loitering at other times. An all-day menu of burgers, sandwiches and salads tackles hunger pangs without the need to roam. The Pool House Bar is screened off from the elements with a view-preserving window-curtain in winter, and spills out onto the restaurant-pool terrace in summer: soak up the mountain scenery with a hibiscus margarita or blackberry-flavoured belvedere mule; there are also wines by the glass and local brews on draft.
Kita serves breakfast until 11am and opens for dinner, 5pm–10pm. Disco Pizza is open 4pm–10pm daily. The Pool House is open 2pm–7pm in winter; longer in summer.
Pendry Park City’s round-the-clock room-service menu means you can order sunrise sandwiches or avocado toast to your residence for breakfast; lunch and dinner options include steak-frîtes and cheese or charcuterie platters – desserts, too.
Pendry Park City is in Canyons Village, one of two mountain bases in Park City, Utah – you’ll find the hotel beside the slopes where the Sunrise chairlift rolls up the hill.
Salt Lake City International is the nearest airport, 45 minutes from Pendry Park City by road: the hotel partners with a private car service and can arrange transfers from $260 one-way (prices may vary outside of winter).
The nearest Amtrak station is in Salt Lake City; you’ll need to transfer from here by road – it’s a 50-minute onward drive to the hotel.
There’s greater call for hiring your own wheels in summer, when Utah’s mountain scenery is more accessible and the snowy slopes less of a distraction. The hotel has a private covered carpark from $50 for 24 hours including valet parking.
Worth getting out of bed for
Park City’s peaks are at their most popular in winter – backing onto the Wasatch mountains in this Utah stretch of the Rockies and offering 7,300 acres of snowy playground at Park City Mountain. The resort is a tale of two bases, from which lifts radiate up the hill: you’ll find Pendry Park City in Canyons Village (the other is Mountain Village) with the Retreat trail making it possible to ski back to the door, and the Sunrise chairlift and Red Pine gondola both in walking distance for fast access up the hill. The hotel has a timetabled shuttle to Main Street, ferrying guests to this resort-thoroughfare’s restaurants and stores. For skiing and snowboarding, the hotel’s kit-shop, Compass Sports, has everything you need (with retail as well as rental), and doubles as a hub for cycling and fishing kit rentals in summer. Pop off your skis to try fat-tire biking, snowmobiling or dog sledding; snowshoeing through the Aspen pines or picking your way along the resort’s cross-country ski trails are your slower-paced options. For summer, the dress code is denim and plaid, the soundtrack is country and the outdoorsy delights on offer run the gamut from fly-fishing to horseback riding to river rafting or mountain biking. Pendry’s concierge can help arrange car hire (preferably soft-top) and suggest itineraries for road trips into Utah’s stunning mountain scenery; or admire it from above with a hot-air balloon ride. A day-flight to Moab to hike among the russet-hued rock formations at Arches National Park is an adventure to savour. Innovative options for cruising down the mountains include the Park City Slide luge run, rail-mounted thrills on the Alpine Coaster or suspended suspense on the Ziprider zipline. And if you want to check out Park City’s other ski areas, the genteel slopes of ski-only Deer Valley and snow-park thrills at Woodward are only a drive away.
There are so many restaurants to enjoy on Main Street – the concierge’s recommendation list is kept meticulously up-to-date. We’ve hand-picked options closer to home in Canyons Village… On the plaza, contemporary cantina Dos Olas is an authentic celebration of Mexican cuisine – much of its decor was sourced across the border; vibrant murals were hand-painted by Pilar Cárdenas, an artist from Mexico City, and native chef Carlos Segura has incorporated his mother’s taco and grandmother’s enchilada recipes on the menu. Signature plates include barbacoa nachos, and cauliflower con mole, plus you’ll want to leave room for a churro sandwich. In a traditional dining room with stone-clad pillars, roaring fireplaces and tan-leather upholstery, Edge Steakhouse (part of the Westgate resort) entices with an international menu that trots the globe: Italian, French and Asian-inspired first courses such as Wagyu tartare, Ahi tuna, gnocchi, and lobster bisque are the warm-up act for an assortment of American steaks – although you may take time getting there with apéritifs and a choice of seafood on ice, cheese and charcuterie plates to linger over (please note that there’s a smart-casual hoodie-and-sneaker-free dress code). The local Waldorf Astoria’s upscale Powder restaurant is set in an elegant dining room of studded-leather chairs, polished wood and crystal ceiling lights and serves a menu inspired by mountain cuisine and centred around the grill with plates including dry-aged rib-eye steaks, tomahawk pork chops and Idaho trout.
Sustainable, seasonal fare is the speciality of brasserie the Farm, which sources all its ingredients within a 200-mile radius: across from Red Pine Gondola in Canyons, it has patio tables as well as spots indoors and is a casual option for lunch; expect local heroes – bison, elk and trout – to feature. If you’re on Main Street, head to Java Cow for all things sweet including pastries, muffins, brownies and macarons, as well as locally roasted coffee. At the bottom of the Town Lift on Main Street, the Bridge Café and Grill is a Park City institution, serving American-Brazilian fare: its eggs Benedict, Brazilian omelette and croissant sandwiches secure its podium spot for pre-ski breakfasts.
Nightlife in Canyons is more après-oriented than a lure for night owls. Red Tail Grill is a tap house that’s popular with the post-ski crowd but starts serving much earlier with a casual menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and burgers, plus outdoor tables with views over the slopes. Umbrella Bar is a keep-your-coat-on, stand-up beer bar and deck at the heart of Canyons Village where you can sink a Breckenridge ale and snack on wings, hot dogs and fries. At the Westgate hotel, gastropub Drafts Burger Bar offers a stacked-patties-and-draft-beer bonanza with a wraparound deck that comes into its own on sunny après-ski afternoons.
