Sacred seclusion

Jungle-clad hills

Panacea Retreat evokes its Greek namesake – the goddess of healing – in its generous villas with divine living spaces, lush vegetation and restorative sea views. But what you really come to appreciate is the near-obsessive attention to detail, from the way the head chef crafts you a bespoke menu to the traditional Thai design and gentle hanging ornaments throughout. Its crowning glory, the Praana residence, even has its own nightclub, bar, karaoke system and cinema in the basement, as well as a tennis court and – the final knockout – a Muay Thai boxing ring.

Our favourite rooms

All villas are reclusive retreats hemmed in by dense foliage, making them ideal for romantic escapes (or giving ample space for groups and families). Panacea’s trump card, though, has to be the peerless Praana residence, more its own resort than a villa. Two infinity pools, a Muay Thai boxing ring, a flood-lit tennis court, and a fully-equipped gym, sauna and steam room, anyone? Or how about hosting your own full moon party? It has a basement where you can rave away in your own nightclub (with a dancefloor and bar), or do pop music proud on the karaoke machine. Or simply curl up on one of 10 reclining leather chairs in the cinema room, glass of wine in hand from a bottle kept in your private cellar.

Your sleekly-designed infinity pool is guarded by a small army of contemporary animal statuettes, rows of daybeds and an open-air pavilion for outside dining. The waters of the Gulf of Samui can be seen in the distance across the enveloping rainforest canopy.

Treat yourself to a free one-hour yoga session plus in-room massage treatments, or stay in the Praana residence for access to the exclusive spa and gym, where there’s a sauna, steam room, and staff on-hand in the dedicated massage studio to provide traditional thai, oil and deep tissue massages, as well as reflexology.

Packing tips

A book of Muay Thai boxing tips will ensure you don’t begin your lesson on the ropes. And what about that tiger-pattern onesie? You’ll have the place to yourself, so why not…

Mobile phones with local SIM cards are available to borrow.

The free-your-mind design doesn’t mean families aren’t welcome. There are free cots and beds for babies, plus bottle-sterilising facilities. Toddlers and teenagers are accommodated with a raft of arts and crafts, board games, toys and DVDs.

Panacea’s private villas are fantastic for families. Each one comes with its own outdoor area, generous separate living quarters and a swimming pool. Hotel staff are well-versed in accommodating little ones, with a pool table, games consoles, table football and plenty of board games, books and toys to keep them suitably amused.

Food and Drink

Top Table

The dining room is great, but what about swimming up to your poolside pavilion – one of its walls doubles as a bar area, with unbeatable views. Your personalised dishes are served by discreet and attentive staff in crisp shirts and culottes.

Dress Code

Bring your comfortable homewear: a tuxedo, pyjamas… you’re the boss.

Hotel restaurant

Don’t expect noisy table neighbours or agonising waits for the bill: here you dine separately in your villa, either at your princely private dining table or outside in your open-air, sea-view sala. The extensive Thai and modern European menu is customisable and tailored to every guest, with the head chef visiting you to discover your tastes and requirements from the outset.

Last orders

Staff are on hand until 10pm for food and drink; when to turn in is up to you.

Room service

Drinks – like meals – are served to you in your villa. When you’ve exhausted the selection of Thai beers and cocktails, it might be time to sample the selection of nutrition shakes, detox juices and fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies.

Koh Samui

Samui International Airport (www.samuiairportonline.com) is about 20 minutes away by car, and staff can arrange free transfers. Alternatively, you can fly to Surat Thani Airport (www.suratthaniairport.com) on the mainland and take the twice-daily ferry to Koh Samui, which takes about three hours.

As well as the free airport transfer, you can also make use of the hotel’s luxury people-carrier, with a chauffeur on hand for island jaunts 12 hours a day. If you’re hiring your own car, all villas have their own private garage.

Worth getting out of bed for

Start the day with a swim and a sunbathe by your enviable infinity pool. Or, for guests of the Praana residence, you can test yourself on the tennis court, either with a partner or against the tennis-ball cannon. Your Muay Thai boxing lesson might provide a tougher test, especially with the distraction of 360-degree sea-and-forest views leaving you open to attack. Or, boost your culinary clout with a Thai cooking class. If you have any energy left to leave your villa, there’s a golf course nearby at the Santiburi Samui Country Club (+66 (0) 77 425 031), or you can share in Koh Samui’s passion for watersports and other aquatic activities such as snorkelling and scuba diving – a good place to start is The Dive Academy Samui (+66 (9) 24 643 264). For immersion into island culture and cuisine, there’s the Fisherman’s Village Friday Night Market, where you can try local seafood and other delicacies.

Guests staying three nights or more before 19 December 2017 can enjoy a whole host of activities that are included in their rate, namley: one daily beach or shopping transfer (available from 9am to 9pm); one massage for each guest per stay; one hour-long yoga session per stay; one Thai cooking lesson per stay. In addition to the above, any booking of the Praana Residence will also receive: a one-hour tennis lesson and Muay Thai lesson per stay.

Local restaurants

The Larder (+66 (0) 77 601 259) in Chaweng serves up unfussy fare from its pun-tastic menu – sample the seared salmon, Can You Fillet, or be tempted by Belly Legal, the pork belly with candied pecans and pickled shallots. For a romantic evening visit the tropical garden and seaside setting of Poppies (+66 (0) 77 422 419), where Thai dancers (not that kind) perform on stage while you eat.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this luxury hill-top villa in Thailand and unpacked their scented candles and massage oils, a full account of their secluded break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Panacea Retreat on Koh Samui…

Even the coolest, most-collected couple would feel their hearts flutter at this spirit-soothing retreat. You could be the most British of cynics, but you’ll soon be swept away by the effortless Thai hospitality, deep-detox therapies, and the gasp-inducing views of the Gulf of Samui – until you feel more like a free-thinking flower child than a sour-faced skeptic. And who can blame you? Your oh-so private villa means no rubbing shoulders with the outside world, and with an outstanding team attending to your every need, you’ll feel your batteries charge in no time – a fitting feeling given Panacea is the name of the Greek goddess of healing. Not only that, but your spacious, modern villa and its attentive staff mean you’ll be unwilling to leave any time soon. Cocktails by the pool; massages on the terrace; dinner with family and friends in the open-air pavilion – it really is your own slice of sawan (paradise).
