Setting

Beyond-Doha desert

Despite its arid nature reserve setting, Our Habitas Ras Abrouq is overflowing with soul. A microcosm of Qatari culture, this all-villa resort celebrates its roots: holistic spa therapies restore with local botanicals, and staff can arrange calligraphy classes in between desert safaris and sea kayaking. The fusion restaurant and beach bar are odes to the locale in looks and fare, and you can seek out further immersion in a soothing soundbath or sunset ritual. There aren’t any magic carpets, but you’ll float around nonetheless.

Unfortunately, this desert retreat is not suitable if you have reduced mobility. Staff will ferry you to your villa in electric golf buggies.

At the hotel

Private beach, gym, padel courts, yoga deck, e-bikes to borrow and free WiFi throughout. In villas: air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, bathrobes and slippers; the Lula Royal Villa has a TV in each room.

Our favourite rooms

The standalone villas at Our Habitas Ras Abrouq take interior cues from their pristine surroundings: sandy shades, artisan-made artwork and bold textiles nod to typical Doha design. In a seafront Al Maha Villa, the beach is an extension of your private bohemian terrace, and you can alternate between salty dips and those in your own pool. The Lula Royal Villa is a sprawling pad with four bedrooms, a large pool terrace, and is set steps from the shore.

Poolside

The main infinity pool is a long, turquoise runway that unfurls down to the sea; its colour changes at sunset when the terrace is washed in a golden glow. It’s a desert-set watering hole, where sunbathers and shade-seekers gather on made-for-two day-beds or by the poolside bar. There’s a second smaller pool at the top end, but each villa has its own one for more secluded heat-beating dips.

Spa

The spa nods to its sandy surroundings with its gold and camel-hued palette, and Qatar-nodding wellness offerings. Ancient remedies are paired with local ingredients in soothing therapies such as a pink-clay ritual, Arabian aloe massage or za’atar and black-lemon body scrub. Afterwards, retreat to the indoor steam room or sauna; you’ll also find an outdoor sauna-cabin near the pool-toting terrace.

Packing tips

A tome-like novel and pack of dog-eared cards as all villas (except the Lula Royal) are screen-free.

Also

The state-of-the-art gym is decked out with Technogym kit and looks out to the water through floor-to-ceiling windows; or drop the tempo with an alfresco yoga or sound healing session.

Children

Welcome. The multi-bedroom villas are best for families, and free baby cots can be added to all villas on request.

Sustainability efforts

Our Habitas hotels champion sustainable design, eschew single-use plastic, offset their carbon emissions, recycle and compost waste, and minimise light pollution with candles and fire pits in outdoor areas. At this Ras Abrouq resort, tent-style canopies cool the buildings naturally and electric golf buggies will whizz you to your villa.

Dress Code

You might like to reference the hotel’s interiors: soft, earthy hues peppered with bold, patterned fabrics.

Hotel restaurant

Qissa means ‘story’ in Arabic, and the tale at this indoor-outdoor restaurant is one of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours. Seasonal produce and ethically sourced ingredients are grilled on an open wood fire, and family-style dishes add to the air of sociability. Shakshuka, dosa masala and ayurvedic elixirs make for healthy breakfasts; indulge in tandoori tiger prawns, tahini-dressed salads and braised lamb shank later in the day. There’s a sunset barbecue every Friday evening, but saffron doughnuts and signature cocktails are all-week treats.

Hotel bar

You’ll find the Beach Bar along the hotel’s sandy shores. Hole up in an egg-chair-like cabana or under the palapa pergola with a house spritz or spicy espresso martini. Bohemian-style seating areas with fire pits dot the resort — these make romantic corners for star-canopied nightcaps.

Last orders

At Qissa, breakfast is from 7am to 11.30am; lunch is served between noon and 5.30pm, and for dinner, it’s 6pm to 11pm. The Beach Bar pours from 9am to 6pm.

Room service

Dishes from a dedicated menu can be delivered to your villa between noon and 11pm.

Address
Our Habitas Ras Abrouq
Ras Abrouq Road Zekreet
Dukhan
Qatar

Our Habitas Ras Abrouq sits in the Unesco-protected Al Reem Biosphere Reserve, a drive away from Doha in the Arabian Gulf.

Planes

Hamad International Airport is a 90-minute drive from the hotel; staff can arrange transfers in a 4x4 for QAR700 each way.

Automobiles

Although there’s free parking and valet services at the resort, we’d suggest putting someone else in the driving seat: roads are unpaved and navigation apps won’t work, plus the hotel can book transfers and tours.

Worth getting out of bed for

Our Habitas Ras Abrouq prides itself on natural and cultural experiences, so you won’t find any screens in your villa. Seek out the former in water-based activities: you can borrow paddleboards, glass-bottom kayaks and snorkelling gear from the hotel. The resort sits in a protected nature reserve, a landscape that entertains with hiking and mountain biking trails, dune-bashing driving tours and visits to a Bedouin falconry. Staff can also arrange guided safaris that conclude with a camel ride.

Cooking classes and artisan-led workshops, such as Sadu weaving and calligraphy, are rooted in local life, as are sunset rituals and Arabic coffee masterclasses. Come evening, storytelling, stargazing and performances by local musicians mark agendas, or you could pour your own cocktail in a mixology taster. Beyond the resort, you’ll find Richard Serra’s striking sculptures dotting the Zekreet Desert and world-heritage site Al Zubara Fort.

Local restaurants

Due to the remote setting, you’ll dine in the resort for the duration of your stay.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this desert-swathed hotel in Ras Abrouq and unpacked their binoculars and calligraphy kits, a full account of their culturally immersive break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Our Habitas Ras Abrouq in Qatar…

Our Habitas Ras Abrouq puts the desert in deserted — it’s the only resort resident within the Al Reem Biosphere Reserve, a sea-hugging natural area that’s protected by Unesco.

This luxe all-villa retreat is dedicated to preserving its privileged setting: standalone casas are shaded by tent-like peaks (not that this is glamping — you’ll have four solid walls); zip around on electric bikes or golf buggies, and lean into a low-tech lifestyle with screen-free rooms and candle- or fire-lit communal areas.

Beyond protecting its natural environment, Our Habitas Ras Abrouq seeks to celebrate local culture. Handwoven tapestries and textiles adorn the supplier-savvy restaurant, beach-facing terraces and your private pool area; you could also craft your own in a Sadu weaving workshop. Wellness warriors can rebalance in Qatari-inspired rituals, alfresco yoga or steamy sauna bouts; thrill-seekers might like glass-bottom kayaking, camel rides and dune-bashing tours.

You’ll find solitude in its location, and conviviality at this resort’s heart.
