Also

Both the Greenhouse and Spyglass have accessible options, each with wheelchair-friendly access and adapted bathrooms for guests with limited mobility. Onera's communal areas are also fully accessible.

At the hotel

Communal area with a hot tub, swimming pool and stargazing deck; private one-mile walking trail, and free WiFi throughout. In suites: fully equipped kitchenette, climate control, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, free bottled water and Public Goods bath products.

Our favourite rooms

The Greenhouse suites are the more spacious of the two, with wraparound terraces, private hot tubs and glass walls that bring boundless views to your bed. But there’s an equally alluring charm to the Spyglass suites, for their bespoke, tube-like shape and secluded setting between the canopies.

Poolside

Far-reaching valley views make for a scenic lap partner at the outdoor, infinity-like swimming pool (open from 8am to 10pm). And around its edge, cushy loungers come soaked in the Texan sun.

Spa

There’s no formal spa at Onera Wimberley, but your private terrace makes for an enticing treatment spot — just give staff some notice, and they’ll be happy to arrange it. If you’re all loved up and not yet ready to part, there’s a couples’ treatment room in the spa tent, which is a few minutes’ walk down the road.

Packing tips

Your adventurous side: this state’s natural beauty isn’t just your view, it’s your playground, too.

Pet‐friendly

Two pups are welcome to join you in any of these Fido-friendly treehouses for a one-off fee of $99 each. See more pet-friendly hotels in Wimberley.

Children

Welcome; there aren’t any dedicated facilities for tots, but this treehouse-like setting will be sure to bring out their delight.

Sustainability efforts

Earth-kind considerations were pivotal during Onera Wimberley’s development, with each stilted suite built along the hill’s natural contours to ensure endemic flora and fauna continue to thrive. The Greenhouse rooms rest under a vegetated rooftop, which is kept lush with recycled water from the showers; furnishings are built from the nearby creek’s fallen cypress trees, and everything runs on sustainably sourced energy. There’s air-conditioning, but rooms are well insulated to minimise its use; and although water bottles are still plastic, there are in-the-works plans to replace them with reusable alternatives.

United States

South of Austin in Texas Hill Country, Onera Wimberley sits just outside its namesake town on a nine-acre, nature-swathed estate.

Planes

Most international flights touch down at Texas’ two major hubs: Austin-Bergstrom and San Antonio. The former is around 50 minutes from Onera by car, and the latter is a little over an hour, depending on traffic. Private transfers aren’t available, but both airports have plenty of taxi ranks to hail a ride.

Trains

Arrive on the Amtrak into San Marcos, which is a 30-minute drive from the hotel and sits on the Chicago-San Antonio line with stops in Dallas, Fort Worth and Austin.

Automobiles

A car is essential in these pastoral parts of Texas; each treehouse comes with its own free parking space. There’s also an electric-vehicle charger in the main area that you’re welcome to use, on request and subject to availability.

Worth getting out of bed for

If you’ve come to Onera Wimberley for its immersed-in-nature setting, make Blue Hole Regional Park your base for outdoor pursuits — the spring-fed swimming hole, hiking paths and picnic spots make it a particularly scenic pick for summer. Jacob’s Well Natural Area, Cypress Falls Swimming Hole, Blanco River and Westcave Outdoor Discovery Area are just-as-striking places to live out your summer camp dreams.

Those who prefer getting to know their terroir via its vineyards will be well taken care of here, too. There are tours and tastings throughout the Hill Country: Wimberley Valley Winery and Fall Creek Vineyards rake in top-scores for their sauvignons, the hill-top Driftwood Estate Winery produces exclusively with Texan-grown grapes and Duchman Family Winery calls on Italian varieties for its award-winning vermentino.

In town, there are art galleries, open gardens, boutiques and quaint cafés to while days away in. And for a flurry of local activity, be sure to visit on the first Saturday of each month (between March and December), when Wimberley Market Days rallies resident artisans and regional suppliers.

Local restaurants

Farm-to-table is as literal as it gets at the Leaning Pear, where menus pay flavorful homage to Hill Country-made produce and alfresco tables invite sunset-hued suppers. An inviting blend of Southern hospitality and local support has kept the Community Pizza & Beer Garden thriving — we suppose its perfectly charred bases and seasonal toppings have something to do with it, too. Continue the Italian feast and make your way through plates of pasta at Trattoria Lisina, a short drive from the hotel in Driftwood.

Local cafés

Cozy, home-made comfort foods and fresh cups of steaming coffee fill gingham-checked tables at Wimberley Café, a loved-by-all diner down the town’s central square.

Local bars

At Willow Lake Watering Hole, live bands energise in-the-know crowds, pop-up food trucks serve all-American bites alfresco, and craft beers come ice, ice cold. The otherworldly interiors at Senza Maeso bring diversity to Wimberley’s saloon-style bar scene, with Art Deco accents, secret doors, a pizza van and creative cocktails, all made with spirits distilled in-house.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from these terraced treehouses in Texas Hill Country and unpacked their Cypress-wood crafts and Market Days delights, a full account of their back-to-nature break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Onera Wimberley…

In a state so well known for its cowboys and cinematic scenery (thank you, John Ford), it only makes sense to show it off — if you’ve got it, flaunt it, after all. And showcasing Texas’ rural region almost as strikingly as the director himself is Onera Wimberley, a ‘landscape’ hotel within easy reach of the Hill Country and its namesake town.

Solitude envelops each stilted treehouse here, where kitchenettes come ready to cook in, windowed walls invite wide-shot wake-up calls, furnishings have been lovingly crafted by local artisans, and private terraces set the scene for in-suite massages.

A state of reverie comes as standard with this stay, but don’t underestimate its adventurous side, either. Blue Hole, Cypress Creek and the Blanco River border your base for summer-camp-style sojourns, and Wimberley’s quaint streets embody the Lone Star State’s Southern charm.
