Setting

Dancing in the moonlight

It won’t take long after arriving at One&Only Moonlight Basin to see why the fictional Dutton family (of Yellowstone fame) and the indigenous people before them are such fierce custodians of this land. The mountains and meadows, the wildlife, the vast open skies, and the scenic lakes and rivers — the maker was feeling inspired when he created Montana. And now, with the arrival of the ultra-luxe One&Only group, it just got even better, thanks to its elevated lodgings, outdoor onsen and three resort-set restaurants.

Our favourite rooms

At One&Only Moonlight Basin, the serene rooms and suites focus on the mountainous majesty outside their windows, with peaceful pine-lined walls and earthy accents in burgundy and blue. Most rooms have a mountain-facing bath tub and balcony, and floor-to-ceiling windows. For more space, there are vast residences that sleep up to 10 guests if you’re travelling en masse, connecting options for families.

Poolside

There are two saltwater pools at the resort, one outdoors and one at the spa. The spa pool is open from 8am to 8pm. You can swim around the clock out in the mountain air, but there’s no lifeguard on duty.

Spa

As with most One&Only hotels around the globe, the spa is mega, with treatments available by Augustinus Bader, Epicutis and Lyma, plus a forest-fringed pool, an outdoor onsen and cold plunge, and steam rooms and saunas.

Packing tips

Don’t panic if you find your suitcase lacking — the hotel boutique is on hand to make you as fabulous as Beth Dutton, with furs and other general cowboy-approved attire.

Also

If you’re enjoying the scent, good news — you can buy it. It’s Montroi ‘Skye’, created especially for the resort.

Pet‐friendly

Two dogs weighing less than 40lbs are welcome for $150 each a stay. They’re welcome on The Landing’s terrace, but the rest of the resort is off-limits. They’ll need to be leashed and not be left attended; dog-sitters can be arranged for a fee. See more pet-friendly hotels in Big Sky.

Children

All ages are welcome, and there are connecting options and multi-room residences for families. Nanny services are on hand for an extra charge. There’s a kids’ club and a teen-friendly games room, too.

Top Table

As close to those enormous windows as you can get for prime peak ogling.

Dress Code

Wild, wild west.

Hotel restaurant

There are three restaurants at the resort: Wildwood, Akira Back and The Landing. Breakfast is served at Wildwood, which also opens for dinners of ranch-to-table fare, served alongside views of Lone Mountain. Akira Back, the acclaimed Korea-born, Colorado-raised chef, has a namesake outpost at the hotel, serving his signature modern Japanese dishes (and famous AB Tuna Pizza, of course), with a view out to Fan Mountain. More alpine vistas await at The Landing, from where you can admire Lone Mountain, Fan Mountain and the Madison Valley as you dine on dishes such as ember-roasted squash soup, chicory salad, ricotta ravilio and beef tartare.

Hotel bar

Dear Josephine pays homage to the Prohibition era, most notably its resourceful bootlegger Josephine Doody. Take your drinks inside in the cozy lounge, or enjoy them out by the fire pit. Après-ski runs here from 2pm till 11pm. There’s also The Moonshack, a trapper’s log cabin hidden away in the woods — if you can find it. Play poker in the cabin, or have a cigar and swap stories around the fire, as you fully embrace the Montana wilderness. The speakeasy is open from 4pm to 11pm.

Last orders

Wildwood’s hours are 7am–11am for breakfast, 5pm–8.30pm for dinner. Akira Back is open Tuesday–Saturday, 5pm–8.30pm. The Landing’s lunch is 11am–3pm, and dinner Wednesday–Monday, from 5pm–8.30pm.

Room service

In-room dining is available around the clock.

Worth getting out of bed for

If you don’t love the great outdoors, you’re probably in the wrong place. Big Sky is a peak-filled playground within the Rockies, with runs that become cycling tracks in the summer within the namesake ski resort and almost 6,000 acres of uncrowded pistes. The loyal geysers, diverse wildlife and beautiful landscapes of Yellowstone are just a 45-mile drive east. The hotel has its own branded gondola taking you straight to the slopes. In winter, non-skiers can enjoy fat-tire cycling and snow-shoeing. Once the snows have melted, fly-fishing, cycling and hiking fill your days. Ride the Lone Peak Tram to the top of Lone Mountain and ski all the way back down again, or just admire the views from the summit and ride it back to the bottom. The hotel can arrange guided wildlife experiences, take you fishing for brown, rainbow and cutthroat trout; in search of bears and bison at America’s first national park, and on a horseback ride across Montana’s mountains and meadows. Nearby lakes and rivers are on hand for stand-up paddle-boarding, kayaking and white-water-raft adventures, too.

Local restaurants

At 8,800 feet, Everett’s 8800 promises an elevated dining experience, in more ways than one — it’s at the summit of Andesite Mountain (open December to April), take the Ramcharger 8 lift. Replenish expended calories with a burger and craft beer at Montana Jack, at the bottom of the mountain in the Exchange — at dinner, you may be treated to live music; or enjoy the classic Montana menu at family-friendly Chet’s Bar & Grill

Local bars

For novelty value, head inside Iglu at the base of the Lone Peak Tram for a drink — it’s surprisingly warm inside, despite being carved from ice and snow; or channel the spirit of après-ski in the Alps at Umbrella Bar, which has 360-degree views through its wall of windows, showcasing Lone Peak.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this luxury hotel in Montana and unpacked their ski jackets and plaid shirts, a full account of their mountain break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside One&Only Moonlight Basin…

Chesney Hawkes wasn’t singing about a high-end hotel group when he earnestly extolled the virtues of being the one and only, but we’re sure he’d approve of One&Only Moonlight Basin, the brand’s singular new stay in Montana. It’s the first outpost in the US, following editions all over the globe, from Mexico to Montenegro. For its debut, it’s gone for proximity to the pistes of the Big Sky resort, home to a vast network of crowd-free ski runs, that become hiking and biking trails come summer. America’s first national park, mighty Yellowstone, and its bison and bubbling geysers, are less than an hour’s drive east. At the resort, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: a super spa, an Akira Back restaurant, family-friendly multi-room residences and maybe even the odd bear wandering through (the staff will train you how to react, don’t worry). For Big Sky skiing, other alpine adventures and general mountain gorgeousness, there’s nowhere we’d rather be.
