At the hotel

Bikes to borrow, working farm and vineyards, charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and custom bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Each of the individually styled rooms is a lofty space washed in aloe, fig and lavender tones, and anchored by splendid hand-painted beds and well-loved antiques. Several open onto private walled courtyards, but the fairest of them all is the old tower silo, now a four-floor, round-everything aerie that practically screams, ‘Rapunzel, let down your hair’ — or whatever the Italian equivalent is. The Fig Suite turns up the indulgence with its alfresco hot tub, making even a quick dip feel like a minor spa pilgrimage.

Poolside

The open-air saltwater pool is calm and inviting, flanked by billowy white cabanas and loungers, with a handy poolside bar-restaurant — and the gentle scent of herbs from the surrounding gardens drifting in on the breeze.

Spa

The resort's spa is a snug, stone-built hideaway you book entirely to yourselves, with a hammam and a sunken jet pool for proper switch-off time. Treatments lean into the resort’s farm-to-skin ethos, from massages to facials and an aloe-vera exfoliation ritual that uses freshly extracted gel mixed with wine, olive oil and wheat germ. And if you prefer your wellness with a workout, the glass-walled fitness studio is tricked-out with Technogym equipment and overlooks the pool and fields, opening up to become an airy, nature-framed space.

Packing tips

Leave a little space in your suitcase — the resort’s own wine and olive oil make very persuasive souvenirs.

Also

You can quite literally get to the root of beauty: wander the aloe plantations, snip your own leaf and watch its 'miracle' gel go from plant to potion in a natural skincare crash course.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs are welcome at Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa for €50 a night, except in the Executive Suite Torre delle Stelle and Superior Suite Fico. Small to medium-sized dogs will feel right at home in the Junior Superior Suites, each with a private patio. See more pet-friendly hotels in Puglia.

Children

All ages are welcome, and little Smiths will love the farm tours. Suites and Suite Superiors sleep four, and cots or extra beds can be added to most rooms for an additional charge.

Sustainability efforts

Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa runs on solar power, conserves water through smart technology and has bid farewell to single-use plastics. Its aloe-vera greenhouses — home to the hotel’s natural skincare line — offer guests a hands-on look at the organic process, including gel extraction and bio-cosmetic creation. In the kitchen, it’s all about local flavour and low food miles, with zero-kilometre ingredients, seasonal menus and creative waste reduction. Add in saltwater pools, recycling and composting, and a community project supporting local aloe cultivation, and you’ve got sustainability that’s more than skin-deep at this B –Corp-certified stay.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Our prime perch is out on the terrace under the pergola, unless you’d rather slip down to the vaulted wine cellar for a candlelit dinner.

Dress Code

The sort of effortless ensemble you’d happily wear to bring in the grape harvest, then toast the day with a glass of Negroamaro.

Hotel restaurant

Meals at Naturalis centre on the estate’s own bounty, and the 4 Elements Lounge Restaurant makes the most of it. Set in the beautifully restored old stables, with an open kitchen and a terrace scented by the surrounding gardens, it serves a true zero-kilometre menu built on the resort’s organic produce — including vegetables, herbs, ancient-grain wheat, olive oil, honey and even aloe vera, all grown within gazing (and grazing) distance. Dinner changes daily, shifting from humble cucina povera classics to more refined plates such as Gallipoli prawn tartare or puntarelle-topped entrecôte, while breakfast lays out homemade pastries, local cheeses, seasonal fruit and eggs cooked to order. Light poolside lunches keep things easy, but the real joy is knowing that much of what’s on your plate was harvested just hours before.

Hotel bar

Steps from the pool, the Naturalis Lounge Bar is an all-day hangout serving refreshing drinks, organic juices and local wines, plus light, garden-fresh lunches if you’re peckish. The signature cocktail is a bright blend of estate-grown pomegranate and house-made aloe vera juice — the resort’s farm-to-glass philosophy in one very sippable hit.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 8am to 11am, lunch from 12.30pm to 3pm, and dinner from 7.30pm to 11pm.

Room service

Dishes practically plucked from outside your bedroom window can be delivered to your room between 7am and 11pm.

Planes

Brindisi is the closest airport, about a 40-minute drive away, and the hotel can arrange private transfers from €90 each way.

Trains

Lecce train station is about 25 minutes away by car, and the hotel can arrange two-person transfers for around €60.

Worth getting out of bed for

Days at Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa can be as hands-on or horizontal as you like: try your hand at cooking with ancient Senatore Cappelli wheat, roll up your sleeves (and trousers, if treading grapes) to help with the vineyard or olive harvests when visiting in the autumn, or join craft workshops ranging from mosaics to basket weaving. Wine tastings in the estate’s vineyards, aloe-gel extraction tours, and open-air yoga keep things rooted in the land; while the resort's sleek boat — a two-cabin Italian motor yacht — whisks guests along the Adriatic for skipper-led coastal jaunts and gourmet on-board bites. When the beach beckons, the sweeping sands of Spiaggia di Alimini are just 25 minutes away by car; or embark on a slightly longer drive to the pine-backed beauty of Baia dei Turchi

Local restaurants

For an evening out in Lecce, head for Primo, where chef Solaika Marrocco gives local flavours a sleek, modern spin. Or try Foscolo — a part restaurant, part gallery that brings polished creativity to each plate. For a seaside splurge, reserve a table at L’altro Baffo in Otranto, where chef Cristina Cante serves contemporary seafood rooted in her family’s traditions; her sea-urchin carbonara has become local legend.

Local cafés

If you find yourself in Lecce one morning, order something strong and foamy from Doppiozero and watch the city stir to life around you.

Local bars

In Lecce’s historic centre, Quanto Basta is a lively cocktail lounge where inventive mixologists twist Puglian flavours into signature drinks that make for a memorable aperitivo

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this consciously converted farm in Salento and unpacked their aloe-infused serums and organic olive oil, a full account of their countryside sojourn will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa in Puglia…

Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa feels like the result of a very fertile imagination. Owners Domenico and Marinella Scordari have coaxed an 18th-century tobacco farm into a chic, agrarian retreat where aloe greenhouses, vineyards and wheat fields wrap around just 14 soothing suites. Most come warmed with antiques and herbal hues, but its keystone is a multi-level, Rapunzel-ready tower whose top floor becomes a celestial hideaway at night, with its round bed set beneath a hand-crafted astronomer’s chart.

The exclusive-use spa takes shelter in a former stone barn, breakfasts spill out under muslin-draped pergolas, and dinners lean heavily on whatever the estate has plucked, pressed or poured that day. Take time to wander the olive groves, cool off in the saltwater pool or learn to weave baskets with Apulian artisans. Deep in Grecia Salentina, you'll likely leave with that signature Naturalis glow — courtesy of both the landscape and its own organic skincare.
