Setting

By windmills and water

Mykonos Theoxenia has long been the island’s it-girl: with a heritage harking back to the Sixties, this coastal basecamp has hosted — name-dropping incoming — the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Mick Jagger. Just as starry as its rockstar roots are the Mediterranean restaurant, handful of sea-breeze-tickled terraces and scene-stealing pool. And after late-night dancing in town, your revelry-fatigued limbs will thank you: your cool-and-calming bedroom is only a short stroll (or hobble) away.

Our favourite rooms

Terracotta ceramics and bold stripes contrast restful, calico-hued bedrooms that are as breezy and light-filled as your island perch. Flirt with sparkling views of the water from the terrace in a Deluxe Suite Sea View; you can then retreat indoors to the living area, which is made all the more private by a separating curtain. The Premium Suite Sea View with Private Pool has a spacious furnished terrace with day-beds, sunloungers and a generously sized plunge pool.

Poolside

The Aegean-azure pool is an idyllic spot to see and be seen. It’s lush with greenery — balancing out all that blue: a palm tree island stands sentry in the water, and thick pines flank one end. People-watch from a parasol- or foliage-shaded sunlounger; retreat to an intimate cabana for a stolen snooze, or find refreshment at the poolside bar.

Spa

At the soothing So Spa, holistic treatments harmonise Greek traditions and cutting-edge tech. Unwind in a 300-year-old bathing ritual with a seaweed or spiced mud soak, or switch off with a sea-salt massage. An infrared sauna, ice bath and cryotherapy sessions offer wellness-boosting changes of temperature to contrast the balmy Aegean climes.

Packing tips

Enough reading to match your pool-time expectations; and a repertoire of poses for sunset photoshoots.

Also

Stretch out with sunrise or sunset yoga, t’ai chi, or meditation sessions, which take place on one of the sea-surveying terraces or in a tucked-away garden corner.

Children

Welcome. Deluxe Suites and above can accommodate a third guest on a sofa-bed; the Theoxenia Two Bedroom Suite sleeps up to five. Baby cots are available on request and staff can arrange babysitting with an external provider for an additional charge.

Dress Code

Nod to the hotel’s Sixties heyday with Pucci prints, flowing fabrics and oversized shades.

Hotel restaurant

Chefs Jerome Serres and Yannis Baxevanis, the dream-team duo behind Apanemi, take their French and Greek roots as inspiration for the Mediterranean cuisine here. At breakfast’s Continental spread, you’ll find made-to-order eggs, pastries and pancakes, but save room for a locally leaning lunch of ouzo-flambéed octopus, pork souvlaki and all the dips (tzatziki, taramasalata, fava bean). Evening offerings continue to spotlight island produce and regional dishes, which are deftly curated in the seven-course tasting menu.

Hotel bar

Poolside Kou Kou bar shakes up signature cocktails, pours local beers and serves light bites.

Last orders

Apanemi serves breakfast from 8am to 11.30am; lunch from 1pm to 6pm, and dinner is between 7pm and 11pm. Kou Kou bar pours from 11.30am to 6pm.

Room service

You can order dishes from a dedicated menu to your door around the clock.

Worth getting out of bed for

Pay homage to Mykonos Theoxenia’s partying pedigree with late nights in nearby Mykonos Town, which is a short stroll away past the Instagram-crowds-luring windmills. Find glad rags for your soirées in designer or independent boutiques, then use the island’s beach clubs or bars as your catwalk to show them off.

Balance out your hedonism with some holistic practices: swap staying up ’til sunrise for morning yoga, meditation or t’ai chi. Repent for last night’s excesses at the Church of Panagia Paraportiani or cleanse your chakras with a full-moon beach bonfire, which the hotel can arrange. You could also charter a yacht for some island-hopping or head for a day-trip to ancient-temple-dotted Delos.

Local restaurants

For designed-to-share starters, catch of the day and Italian-inspired dishes, bag a candlelit table on Nautilus’ whitewashed terrace. Port-facing Vegera celebrates island-sourced ingredients, such as Myconian sausage, yoghurt and cheese, plus the kitchen garden supplies fresh fruit and vegetables. Plates at open-air Kiki’s Tavern are fuss-free — grilled fish, green salads — but the flavours and generous sides of water views are worth fussing over.

Local cafés

Freshen up with a frothy frappé or strong espresso at Laundry Cafe, a dinky spot for all-day pick-me-ups. You’ll fall head over heels for caramel-drizzled focaccia, iced coffees and vanilla-matcha lattes at intimate Soulmates Mykonos, which is in the heart of the town.

Local bars

There’s a feeling of did you even go to Mykonos if you didn’t swing by lively beach club Scorpios, where fine wines and inventive cocktails fuel day-to-night revels. Panoramic perch 180º Sunset Bar lives up to its name: settle in with a mastiha-laced sundowner as the sugar-white town is bathed in a tangerine glow.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this hedonistic hotel in Mykonos and unpacked their dancing shoes and designer buys, a full account of their island break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Mykonos Theoxenia in Greece…

Mykonos Theoxenia stands out from the crowd: its listed façade has remained the same since the hotel was first opened in the Sixties, an exposed-stone contrast to the island’s penchant for sea-foam-white exteriors. Back in the day, it was a sybaritic hotspot that drew a Studio 54-worthy crowd — Mick Jagger, Jackie O, Barbra Streisand — and threw a damn good party.

But your hosts have since ditched the disco in favour of ancient Greek spa rituals, nourishing Mediterranean fare and sunrise yoga or meditation. The atmosphere, however, is far from sober; instead free-spiritedness runs through this retreat, just fuelled by holism rather than hedonism.

That said, this boutique hotel is poised on the fringes of town, by the seafront windmills, meaning that Mykonos’ gilded beach clubs and bars are only a shimmy away. Just because Mykonos Theoxenia has hung up its dancing shoes — doesn’t mean you have to...
