Setting

Coveted downtown corner

A stay at Georgian boutique hotel Municipal Grand is a sound investment in good taste. Set in a former bank-turned-municipal building, this mid-century landmark now trades in atmosphere rather than interest rates, with a rooftop pool for daylight dividends that’s brilliantly bonded with the late-night speakeasy downstairs. From the Death & Co–adjacent team, it’s a place to bank some rest, withdraw a cocktail or two, and let Savannah add a little surplus.

More details

Rates exclude breakfast, but à la carte options like eggs-your-way, cinnamon rolls and French toast are available each morning for a charge.

Also

The whole of Municipal Grand is accessible if you have limited mobility, and there are two specially adapted room categories — the King Accessible and King Suite and Tub Accessible.

At the hotel

Rooftop terrace, gym and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, tablet, Marshall Bluetooth speaker, climate control, coffee machine, tea-making kit, minibar, bathrobes and natural bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Our top picks are the suites, especially those with proper bath tubs — the sort that encourage a long soak after a day navigating Savannah on foot. The Patio Suite stands out for its private terrace, ideal for a quiet coffee or a low-key nightcap above downtown.

Poolside

The Sun Club is a guest-only rooftop pool area where candy-red and white striped loungers pop against trailing greenery, and discreet bar service delivers icy refreshers from mid-morning late into the afternoon.

Spa

There’s no spa at Municipal Grand, but treatments can be arranged in-room or at nearby partner Spa Bleu. There’s also a round-the-clock fitness studio with cardio machines, free weights and space to stretch it out.

Packing tips

Pack a roll or two of 35mm — the Sun Club’s candy-striped loungers and mid-century mood are made for film — and something lightweight to throw on between dips and drinks.

Also

Make a mental note of the hangover-prevention gum in the minibar before heading to the speakeasy — a small but noble defence against the hotel’s generous pours.

Pet‐friendly

Municipal Grand doesn’t welcome dogs except for trained service animals. See more pet-friendly hotels in Savannah.

Children

All ages are welcome, but this feels like more of a grown-up getaway.

Food and Drink

Top Table

For groups, snag one of the comfy booths; otherwise, the marble-top bar is the best seat in the house for watching the mixologists at work.

Dress Code

The look here is closer to gallery opening than grand opening, plus something that carries well into cocktails downstairs.

Hotel restaurant

Municipal Bar feels reassuringly grown-up — a low-lit room on the ground floor of clean lines and green velvet banquettes with a menu that keeps American staples familiar, but far from dull. The brunch menu is comforting yet elevated, from ricotta French toast with peaches, and a no-nonsense egg sandwich with hot mayo and hashbrown, to smoked salmon tartine. Come dinner, the steak frites, simply dressed branzino and signature burger earn repeat orders.

Hotel bar

Downstairs, The Hot Eye is where the hotel’s cocktail pedigree really shows. Created by the founders of Death & Co — the team behind some of the much-lauded bars in New York City and Los Angeles — this speakeasy is designed for late hours and vinyl-spinning DJ sets. Mixes are playful but precise: Crushed Vice brings tequila, corn and chili liquor into sharp focus, High Society folds espresso and mole into something dark and seductive, and Femme Fatale is all herbal lift. Upstairs, the mood lightens at the Sun Club’s poolside bar, where spritzes, passion-fruit coolers and frozen drinks keep things breezy between dips.

Last orders

At Municpal Bar, brunch is from 8am to 3pm, dinner from 5pm to 10pm, and drinks until 11pm. The Hot Eye pours from 7pm to 1am, Thursday to Sunday; Sun Club opens daily between 9am and 7pm.

Room service

You can dine in-room from 8am to 9.30pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’ll get the most out of Savannah on foot: this is a city designed for wandering, where leafy squares stitch together neoclassical mansions and grand townhouses, many now open as small museums, such as the stately Davenport House Museum. As you walk, the city’s stories surface naturally — from Civil War lore (Savannah was famously spared by Sherman) to cultural touchstones like Moon River, written by local son Johnny Mercer, whose namesake river lies just beyond downtown. Pause in Forsyth Park to watch the light shift through magnolias, then follow your curiosity toward galleries and studios (don’t miss Laney Contemporary or Gustein Gallery) shaped by the influence of Savannah College of Art and Design, which has helped usher in a creative undercurrent beneath the city’s old-soul exterior.

Beyond the urban spell, salt marshes and open beaches await on nearby islands — with Tybee Island offering an easily reached dose of sea air and surf-chic sandy stretches. Other day trips could include Whitemarsh Island for tranquil trails through oak and palmetto forest, and wilder Skidaway Island State Park, where kayaks drift past egrets and dolphins.

Local restaurants

Savannah is where serious cooking hides behind heavy doors and handsome façades. The candlelit Olde Pink House, just along Abercorn Street from Municipal Grand, serves classic Southern cooking in a grand 18th-century mansion with a dinner-party atmosphere. For something more contemporary, Common Thread champions Georgia’s farmers and fishers with confident, produce-led plates that shift with the seasons. And then there’s The Grey, set inside a restored art deco bus terminal.

Local cafés

At The Collins Quarter (either downtown or by Forsyth Park), brunch stretches comfortably into the afternoon, with favorites ranging from eggs Benedict and shrimp-and-grits to Australian-leaning plates like bubble and squeak or smashed peas on toast. Over at Shuk, tuck into shakshuka, chicken shawarma pitas, muhamarra and house-made spreads designed for sharing — or hoarding, depending on hunger levels.

Local bars

At Late Air wine bar, the focus is on minimal-intervention bottles and a short, confident food menu, where bright, punchy flavours replace anything fussy or overworked; standouts include olives slicked with zhug, oysters sharpened with shiso mignonette and crudo finished with a hit of ferment and heat.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this buzzy bolthole in coastal Georgia and unpacked their artisan candy and thrifted finds, a full account of their charming city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Municipal Grand in Savannah…

At Municipal Grand, the past is written into the balance sheet. Built in 1961 as the First Federal Savings and Loan Association, the building has long anchored the corner of Broughton and Abercorn. Today, it marks the Southeastern debut of Midnight Auteur, the hospitality venture from the cocktail-scene-shaking founders of Death & Co. The mid-century framework remains intact — terrazzo floors, warm woods and curved geometry — while the lobby functions less as reception than gathering point. Municipal Bar is where social capital accrues quickly over smoked salmon tartine or fancy omelette in the morning; mussel frites, branzino or sourdough dumplings as the day gives way to night. Rooftop swims and spritzes call, before venturing downstairs to Hot Eye, where cleverly calculated tipples await.
