Highland perch

A serene counter to Bali’s bustling south, Munduk Cabins is set on a jungle-swathed hillside in remote highlands. Mountain panoramas unfold from the terrace of each standalone residence, cloistered by the forest canopy. An infinity pool, sunset-spying fire pit and enticing restaurant make the most of the valley views; and guides are on hand to lead you to waterfalls, high-altitude lakes and mist-wreathed monasteries that look as if they’re built in the clouds.

Also

Unfortunately, Munduk Cabins’ hillside setting and network of elevated walkways make it unsuitable for guests with reduced mobility.

At the hotel

Fire pit, free laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: climate control, smart TV with Netflix, tablet with Spotify, Bluetooth speaker, minibar, free bottled water, tea- and coffee-making kit, tote bag, Indonesian sarong, bathrobes, slippers and Sensatia Botanicals bath products.

Our favourite rooms

All six cabins are dressed to the same standard, with dark-wood walls and floors, teak furniture and stone-clad bathrooms. Each has vast picture windows and a private terrace overlooking the jungly hills and valley. The Studio Cabins will be roomy enough for most, but for added romance, swing for the one with a private cabana. The Premium Suite Cabin with Jacuzzi is the most indulgent, with a larger living area and a second, garden-ringed terrace with a hot tub and double day-bed.

Poolside

Reached by a raised walkway, the infinity pool overlooks the jungle and verdant valley beyond. It’s flanked on the landward side by sunloungers and a cabana with an alfresco lounge area. There’s a separate hot tub next to the main pool, also with sweeping valley views.

Packing tips

An appetite for mountain adventures and sunsets that turn the peaks from green to gold.

Also

The hotel can arrange massages and Balinese treatments with a local therapist, who’ll set up in your cabin or on your private terrace.

Pet‐friendly

Unfortunately, Munduk Cabins doesn’t accommodate pets. See more pet-friendly hotels in Bali.

Children

All ages are welcome at Munduk Cabins, but the hotel is better suited to couples. If you’re travelling with kids, book the Premium Two-Bedroom Suite Cabin. Some cabins can accommodate a child on a sofa bed, also for an extra charge.

Sustainability efforts

Munduk Cabins is actively reducing the use of single-use plastics, uses refillable bath products and supports small-scale community farmers, producers and local guides.

Top Table

As close to the window as you can get.

Dress Code

Swap your hiking gear for something a little dressier — say, a silk shirt and linen trouser combination from Our Legacy, or a midi dress from Nanushka.

Hotel restaurant

With its soaring ceiling, spherical lanterns and sleek banquettes, Ulekan cuts a refined figure, creating a pleasing contrast to the rugged mountainscape visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The restaurant takes its name from the pestle and mortar found in virtually every kitchen in Indonesia — a fitting nod to tradition, seeing as the menu is built around recipes that have been handed down over generations. You’ll find classic sates, curries and rice dishes alongside heartier plates that are meant for sharing, such as Balinese crispy duck or the beef-cheek padang. Sambals — the often-fiery sauces made in an ulekan — can be ordered separately, meaning you can sample several in one sitting.

Hotel bar

Clove Bar is in the restaurant, topped by a solid block of onyx. The mixologists here have created cocktails inspired by the diverse flora found across the Indonesian archipelago; try the Old Man Kretek, in which clove is muddled with smoked Maker’s Mark bourbon, or the Munduk Mule, a confection of Nusa Cana spiced rum, ginger-lime juice, vanilla, aromatic bitters and Henri’s ginger beer. There’s a menu of snacks to pair with your pour, including charcuterie boards, Bali black pig sausages and perkedel jagung, a crispy sweet corn fritter served with sambal and kaffir lime leaves.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7am–10.30am, then a lunch menu is served until 5pm; dinner service is from 5pm–10pm. Drinks flow at Clove Bar from 7am to 10pm.

Room service

You can order breakfast to your room until 10am, and dishes from Ulekan’s all-day menu from 10am–10pm.

Munduk Cabins
Jalan Pura Puseh Munduk
Buleleng
Indonesia

Munduk Cabins is in the mountainous highlands of North Bali. Famed for its volcanoes, lakes and waterfalls, this remote region is cooler and quieter than the island’s bustling south.

Planes

International flights touch down at Ngurah Rai International Airport, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Munduk Cabins (if the traffic plays nicely). The hotel can arrange private, one-way transfers for up to four people for IDR 1,100,000.

Automobiles

Bali’s highlands are far less congested than the southern hotspots, but driving can still be nerve-wracking if you aren’t used to the local roads. Many visitors opt for a moped instead; better still, hire a driver so you can sit back and enjoy the scenery stress-free. There’s free 24-hour parking at the hotel, too.

Worth getting out of bed for

Bali’s highlands are seamed with mountain springs, freshwater pools and waterfalls, many of which are within easy reach of Munduk Cabins. You can join a guided trek that ticks these off in one fell swoop, crossing spice plantations, jungle paths and bamboo bridges in the process. Alternatively, strike out to Brahmavihara-Arama, the largest Buddhist monastery in Bali, or make the pilgrimage to Banjar hot springs, where the waters are extolled for their skin-softening benefits. For something less strenuous, try your hand at the local cuisine in one of the hotel’s cooking classes, or peruse the bustling markets in nearby villages.

Local restaurants

Farm-to-table restaurant The Botanist is big on seasonality, creating menus that reflect the natural cycle of northern Bali’s farming culture. You’ll find a diverse range of dishes that nod to Indonesia’s rich culinary medley, including Maldivian curries, spicy Thai soups and classic Indonesian noodles. Arumkayu is a family-run favourite overlooking tropical gardens and terraced rice paddies. Service isn’t always the snappiest but you’ll be hard pushed to find a more authentic chicken curry, sticky banana cake or cup of Balinese coffee. Set high on the hillside, The Little Hill Terrace is the place for a sunset dinner — the glass-walled dining room has panoramic views of the rippling greenery on every side. Try the pork ribs with kapulaga sauce or the beef rendang, which is slow cooked in spiced coconut gravy.

Local bars

For wine and cocktails, your best bets are The Botanist or the Sunset Bar at the Munduk Moding Plantation Nature Resort, where the bar staff will mix you a mean negroni, whisky sour or tipple made with Balinese arak. For cold beer in a casual setting, head to a local warung (Indonesia’s casuak, bang-for buck restaurants); Warung Made's is a favourite.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this mist-wreathed retreat in Bali’s highlands and unpacked their recipe for the local sambal sauce, a full account of their mountainside stay will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Munduk Cabins in Bali…

Escaping the crowds has become a bit of an art form in Bali, but there’s one method that still works a charm: high tailing it to the hills. Specifically, to Munduk Cabins, a high-altitude retreat in the northern highlands, where the views stretch from the verdant peaks to the distant sea.

This collection of six cabin-style hideaways has riotously verdant views from on high, with canopy-grazing cabanas, an elevated infinity pool and a fire pit from which to contemplate the rolling sea of green. Natural selections reign supreme here, used to shape the timber and stone interiors of each stilted cabin, informing the time-honoured recipes used in the panorama-peeking restaurant, and lending character to cocktails infused with indigenous botanics. When you’re not basking on your private terrace or luxuriating in the hillside hot tub, you’ll want to be out in the wild, joining guided waterfall treks, seeking out volcanic hot springs and hiking to hidden temples.
