Setting

Old town perch

Münchner Kindl is for adults only, but it’s your inner child who will fall for its warm embrace. This curated crashpad is Bavarian to a tee — named after the city’s emblem, serving lecker German breakfasts, and crowned by a street-surveying rooftop sauna you can plot your beer crawl from. But it’s also big on heart, with flamboyant interiors and a convivial bar primed to welcome weary flâneurs home. We know we shouldn't have favourites, but this might be our golden child…

The maximalist interiors in Münchner Kindl’s bedrooms feature ceiling murals that nod to Munich’s street-art scene, eat-the-rainbow colour palettes and bold Bavarian flourishes. In the loft-set Emerald Canopy Suite, you’ll feel like the king of the castle among its gilded details, chinoiserie fabrics and a book-lined snug.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no formal restaurant, but breakfast is served each morning in the art-adorned lobby. The Weisswurstfrühstück, a hearty Bavarian pairing of white sausage and a doughy pretzel, offers a taste of tradition; more familiar temptations include avocado toast or honey-drizzled bircher muesli.

Hotel bar

At the fire-warmed honesty bar, staff double as bartenders, shaking up signature cocktails that put a teatime twist on aperitivo hour: sip a matcha-infused Kyoto Sour, a fragrant Earl Grey martini or a coffee-laced Negroni.

Last orders

Breakfast is served in the lobby between 8am and 10am during the week, until 11am from Friday to Sunday. The honesty bar pours from 4pm to 10pm.

Address
Münchner Kindl
Damenstiftstraße 16
München
80331
Germany

Münchner Kindl resides in Munich’s heritage-steeped old town, near the city’s Gothic cathedral.

Planes

Munich International Airport is a 40-minute drive from the hotel; staff can arrange one-way transfers for €150.

Trains

Rail routes from Berlin, Nuremberg and Salzburg call at Munich Hauptbahnhof, which is a 15-minute taxi ride from the hotel. U-Bahn trains from Sendlinger Tor station, a five-minute walk away, can whizz you across the city or to the airport.

Automobiles

You won’t need a set of wheels: the city is easily explored by foot or by public transport. If you choose to drive, there’s public parking at Pschorr Garage, where you’ll get a 50 per cent discount through the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Set in Munich’s old town, Münchner Kindl is your launchpad to the city’s historic sights. The two-tower cathedral, Frauenkirche, draws a crowd with its Gothic architecture and alleged devil’s footprint; the suburb-set Nymphenburg Palace is just as impressive with its baroque gardens. Marvel at oeuvres by Kandinsky and Klee at modern art gallery Lenbachhaus, or street art at Muca (staff can also arrange graffiti walking tours). If you’ve already exceeded your daily step count, navigate the streets on a guided segway ride or bring new meaning to city breaks with surfing on the Eisbach River. You could learn to craft a bespoke dirndl or brew Bavarian beer in a locally led workshop, before putting your new skills to good use during Oktoberfest’s merry celebrations.

Local restaurants

Named after two friends, Landersdorfer & Innerhofer brings some fun to fine dining: there’s no menu, instead multi-course dinners reflect what’s found at the market that morning. It may be a steakhouse by nature, but Little London Bar & Grill caters to all palates with its British-inspired plates, oyster platters and, of course, fine cuts of beef. South Asian flavours influence the dishes at authentic Aimy, where designed-to-share seafood towers and dumplings are stand-outs.

Local cafés

The name is a bit of a giveaway, but Schmalznudel - Cafe Frischhut is renowned for its namesake doughnuts, a regional delicacy that’s fried and sugar-dusted (and very indulgent). At Sweet Spot Kaffee, you’ll hit just that with speciality brews and pillowy pastries.

Local bars

At frozen-in-time beer hall Augustiner Stammhaus, art deco interiors and an archway-framed courtyard are your backdrop for thirst-quenching pints. Drop by low-lit Loretta Bar for amaro-centric cocktails and glasses of German wine.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Münchner Kindl in Munich…

The ever-evolving motif of the Münchner Kindl (which translates to ‘Munich child’) has been the city’s coat of arms for centuries. The juvenile figure has gone through various iterations, but the newest kid on the block is boutique hotel Münchner Kindl, which — despite its youth-bidding name — is for adults only.

It’s the sister stay to Smith-approved Heidelberg Suites, and this Bavarian city basecamp shares its Heidelberg sibling’s genetic good looks with Jackson Pollock-referencing ceilings, jewel-toned shades and avant-garde bird lamps.

Sure, you’ll get a feel for Bavaria’s charms at breakfast or over a fire-toasted nightcap, but in-the-know staff can give you the lay of Munich’s land — Gothic architectural gems, lively food markets and renowned museums top agendas. But let’s be honest, so does a fair amount of beer-drinking: the city is home to stein-swilling Oktoberfest. It’s a time when flags and pennants of the original Munich child adorn the streets and pubs, but — after plenty of dirndl-swishing dancing — back at cosseting Münchner Kindl, you’ll sleep like a baby.
