Style

Fabric of life

Setting

Psirri garment district

Say hey to Mona in Athens, once a textiles factory in the Fifties, now a hipsters’ paradise in Psirri. The hotel is bringing back shabby chic and makes an art form out of peeling paint, exposed steel pipes and warehouse-size ceilings. Hang out with the in crowd (and acclaimed international chefs) in the laptop-friendly living room, spy the Acropolis up on the roof or decide which items you want to take home with you, since everything, from the teapot collection to the organic bedding, is (helpfully) for sale.

Address
Mona
4 Kakourgodikiou Street
Athens
105 54
Greece

Mona is in the Athenian neighbourhood of Psirri, a minute’s walk from Monastiraki Square.

Planes

The city’s airport is a 45-minute drive from the hotel – transfers can be arranged.

Trains

You’ll be able to catch a train from the airport to Monastiraki’s station, which is also handy for getting around the city by metro.

Automobiles

A car isn’t necessary to explore Athens from this central stay, but you can stow it at a nearby car park if you need to.

Other

Anyone (wisely) heading onwards to the Greek Islands can head to the port of Piraeus by catching a 15-minute train from Monastiraki.

Worth getting out of bed for

Hanging out in the hotel’s lively lobby is an activity in itself – you’ll be able to meet fellow guests as well as artistic Athenians, admire the teapot collection or arrange a tour of the hotel’s many artworks; the staff can also arrange sound-healing and Thai massages. Twice a week, the rooftop hosts a gathering of the House of Shila’s members. The Benaki Museum of Islamic Art is nearby, as are the antique markets of Monastiraki and Avissinias Square, in case you haven’t stockpiled enough finds back at House of Shila HQ; or seek out treasures of an edible kind at Varvakios’ food-dispensing stalls.

Local restaurants

Traditional Greek food can be enjoyed in view of the Acropolis from the rooftop of Cafe Avissinia on the namesake square and in the heart of its antique market. For a more modern take on a traditional taverna, Linou & Soubasis, a few minutes’ walk from Mona, is the 21st-century restaurant for you. The name may make you think otherwise, but it’s Greek food all the way at Seychelles in the downtown district of Metaxourgeio.

Local bars

Drinking spots attempting to rival Mona’s rooftop include Juan Rodriguez, with a bar counter just made for sliding slammers along, and the Athenian-approved wine bar Heteroclito, near the Mitropoleos cathedral.

Tucked away in the heart of Athens, Mona is the sort of place you stumble into and never want to leave. This converted 1950s textile factory is more Berlin loft than traditional Greek guesthouse. And that’s precisely its charm. The vibe is stripped-back elegance: the Brutalist structure is softened by silk drapes, terrazzo floors are warmed with linen, and quality tunes hum softly in the background.

Mr Smith and I recently stopped over in the centre of the city, on our way to the Athenian Riviera. The hotel is in Psirri, Athens' garment district, and steps from Monastiraki Square. Our room had high ceilings and was flooded with natural light. Alongside various artworks, there was a curated selection of clothes — everything you see is available to purchase, another unique and subtle aspect to this charming residence. The bed and linen couldn't have been more comfortable and the temperature for sleeping was just spot on. A freestanding bath tub was tucked under the big industrial windows, meaning we could gaze out at the Athens skyline as we soaked.

Come sunset, the hotel rooftop comes alive, with unforgettable views of the Acropolis and a help-yourself bar, perfectly in keeping with the vibe and ethos. The chilled red wine was a welcome addition in the searing Athens heat. We were asked if we'd like breakfast on the rooftop, and couldn't think of a better way to start the day. Waking up to the sounds of the bustling city and the calls of the nesting swifts circling in the sky — it was heaven.

The location is a joy, just a short walk to some of our favourite spots in Athens, including Wine Is Fine and Kennedy Vins, and a number of exciting restaurants that are making Athens feel so relevant and fresh right now.

The staff and service were another highlight. The reception feels more like an informal living room, decorated in the eclectic and stylish Mona style — a personal touch you just don't get with most hotels. We felt like the whole checking in process was bespoke to us. The staff were extremely helpful, going above and beyond with advice and recommendations. They were also really helpful with booking taxis around the city.

Breakfast was delicious — we enjoyed French toast, omelettes and mixed mezze that we would have happily called by for had we stayed elsewhere. Having experienced Mona a couple of times now though, I'm not sure we would be willing to take that risk. This is firmly now our Athens home from home. If you're looking for a calm, stylish, comfortable and luxurious stay in a unique setting, Mona is the boutique hotel in Athens for you.
