Also

Seven of the Dreamcatcher Queen and Double Queen rooms have been adapted for wheelchair users with roll-in showers and grab bars. All of the resort, except the farm, is accessible for guests with limited mobility and golf carts are available to help get around.

At the hotel

Yoga barn, farm, hiking trails, high-ropes challenge course, sensory garden and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV with meditation channels, air-conditioning, coffee machine and herbal tea-making kit, free Soma-filtered water, mini fridge, bathrobes and slippers, and Zents bath products.

Our favourite rooms

In the Hill Country King rooms, you need only throw on a robe and pop out onto your private balcony for rolling views across the nature preserve.

Poolside

There are two heated outdoor infinity pools, the Discovery Pool and the Serenity Pool, each with top-of-the-world views of Lake Travis and the nature preserve. Both pools are open from 6am to 10pm.

Spa

Amethyst, citrine and the scent of jasmine set the tone at the Life in Balance Spa, a nexus of holistic spoiling. Drawing inspiration from the surrounding nature preserve, treatments make soothing use of organic botanicals (most stresses will melt after a massage with amber and cardamon oil) and whole-plant facials bring on a Gaia-like glow. But to fully commit to the cosseting, opt for a bespoke top-to-toe ritual. Therapies rooted in Ayurveda, traditional eastern practices and reiki are available too, as are couples’ options, manis and pedis. Hopefully you’ve a few more contented sighs in you yet, because there’s also a sauna, steam room, hot tub and outdoor serenity pool with sweeping Hill Country views. Please note, spa treatments should be booked at least four weeks in advance. At the gym, the emphasis falls on mindfulness and approachability. Fitness classes range from Pilates to line dancing and low-impact options like cardio drumming. Personal training is available, too.

Packing tips

Throw in a pair of Hokas with your Pilates gear, so you’re all set to hit the oak-shaded hiking trails.

Also

If you feel like even your phone’s judging you when the weekly screentime report rolls in, this is the place for you. Screen use is limited to your room and designated spots around the resort, so inbox addicts can go full ‘do not disturb’.

Sustainability efforts

Miraval Austin uses entirely Green-e certified renewable energy. The team at the resort’s restaurant, café and bar takes pride in sourcing regional produce, and ingredients (from honey to hens’ eggs) come straight from Miraval’s farm. Plus, biodegradable packaging is used for all takeaway items, and you’ll be given a reusable water bottle at check-in to fill up with the resort’s free Soma-filtered water.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Out on Hilltop Crossings’ patio, eye candy comes in the form of forest-swathed hills as far as the eye can see.

Dress Code

Breezy silhouettes and light fabrics – no need to undo all that good work getting loosey goosey.

Hotel restaurant

Banish all drab preconceptions of health food –– at Hilltop Crossings Kitchen, Miraval’s main restaurant, chef Ben Baker makes balanced eating a bold-flavored delight. Menus change with the season and rotate every four days, but are always powered by regional or homegrown produce. Start your day with buttermilk pancakes, French toast, an omelet or a farmer’s breakfast –– a hearty hash with potatoes, bacon and eggs. Lunch might be a house-made vegan or sirloin burger, or a daily special from the buffet. At dinner, signature dishes include hempseed meatballs and tender bone-in chicken breast, each paired with fresh-picked veg from the farm or local growers. Charcuterie and cheese from featured producers  are staples, too. The Nest Café is your pit stop between Pilates and your pedi appointment. Here, you can pick up a smoothie, snack or wholesome sweet treat to-go.

Hotel bar

At Hilltop Crossings Kitchen, there’s a sommelier-picked list of sustainable wines, plus an inventive menu of cocktails and mocktails. Come evening, swing by the Nest Lounge for a laidback nightcap. There’s also the poolside Discovery Café, which will keep you supplied with snacks and tipples between dips.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at Hilltop Crossings Kitchen from 7am to 10am, lunch from 11.30am to 2pm, and dinner from 5.30pm to 9pm. The Nest Café is open from 6am to 2pm, and the Nest Bar and Lounge from 2pm to 9pm.

Room service

You can order dishes from Hilltop Crossings’ menu to your room whenever the kitchen is open.

Worth getting out of bed for

There’s an enticing calendar of expert-led activities, ranging from the cozy to the ‘can’t believe I just did that’, but all with the emphasis on mindfulness. Guided meditations can focus on singing bowls, crystals or chakra work; tap into your spiritual side further with an intro to tarot. Yoga classes span disciplines – vinyasa and yin might be familiar, silk-wrapped aerial or a session soundtracked by the tunes of Willie Nelson more left-field. Keep your pulse up with Pilates or your pick of fitness classes (we’re liking the sound of line dancing). A nature walk will take you out along Hill Country’s hiking trails. Further outdoorsy kicks come from kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Travis or the Colorado River. The resort also has a high-rope challenge course, if you fancy going full Tarzan. Down at Miraval’s farm, have a go at horse riding, beekeeping or gardening with local experts. Look out for the regular cooking, nutrition and mixology classes in the teaching kitchen, local wine tastings and arts and crafts workshops, too. And if you don’t know where to start, Miraval’s wellbeing guides will help you draw up a tailored diary.

Local restaurants

The nourishing, homegrown menus at Hilltop Crossing Kitchen and the Nest are full of variety and rotate every four days, so you’ll have little need to dine further afield.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this holistic hotel in Texas and unpacked their yoga pants and plant-based serums, a full account of their rebalancing break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Miraval Austin Resort & Spa…

The ‘best me’ bucket list — we all have one: that roll-call of hobbies, skills and self-care splurges, inevitably shunted to the bottom of the day-to-day to-do list, that we’ll totally get around to…eventually. Well, consider this a call to (in)action –– hit airplane mode, head to Miraval Austin Resort & Spa and make ‘eventually’ happen.

Expert therapists mastermind bespoke treatments and workshops, from singing bowl meditations to hammam rituals. But balance reigns here, so wellbeing might also mean a craft coffee tasting or culinary masterclass, beekeeping or belaying around the high ropes course, hiking oak-covered hills or eyeing them from the infinity pool. A downhome Texan twang keeps things approachable, with yoga set to Willie Nelson tunes, horse rides at the farm, and menus powered by homegrown or local produce. Your ‘best you’ is already flinging on their flannel shirt, breathing fresh country air and booking a gua sha facial. When mindful me-time seems an impossibility, we prescribe a Miraval cure.
