Setting

Viticulturalists’ valley

It’s sleekly camouflaged against the rocky hillside, but Mira Earth Studios is a standout wine-country retreat. Ten luxury standalone studios, each with a private terrace and sauna, vaunt Valle de Guadalupe’s rugged beauty through floor-to-ceiling windows. Handmade minimalist interiors spotlight Mexican artisans, and curated snacks come courtesy of local chefs. Watching the sun set over rust-hued hills from your Jacuzzi, you’ll wonder why reconnecting with nature can’t always be so cushy.

Our favourite rooms

No short straw here — the studios are identical decuplets, each decked out with an infrared sauna, a private terrace and a Jacuzzi. One of the studios overlooks a large natural rock, and although this pushes the vine terraces into the backdrop, it’s still a view that you’ll come to love.

Poolside

The heated outdoor pool is accompanied by a bar and stunning views, plus each room has a private, valley-gazing Jacuzzi.

Spa

There’s no spa, but Mira Earth can set up massages and yoga sessions with local practitioners, in your room or out on your terrace.

Packing tips

The trick is to have lots of layers, to take you from sizzling afternoons to crisp, clear-skied nights.

Also

If you’re popping the question or planning a birthday bash, say the word and staff can organize a private alfresco dinner with a curated menu and mood-setting decorations.

Children

This restful wine country retreat is for over-18s only.

Sustainability efforts

Care has been taken to keep Mira Earth Studios in harmony with its wild surroundings. Each studio has a green roof planted with native flora, propagated from seeds collected on the ranch. The studios’ walls are made of rammed earth, an ancient method, here using soil gathered from the site. Water is recycled for use on the green roofs and landscaping, and the kitchenettes are stocked with regionally sourced groceries.

Worth getting out of bed for

The view from your terrace could tempt you in two different directions. The rugged hillscape might leave you itching to hit the hiking trail, let loose your inner vaquero on a guided horseback ride, or survey the vineyards from above on a helicopter tour. For a more sedate way to take in the scenery, ask the staff about a picnic — they’ll set you up in a hillside spot with a local bottle of wine and (for balance) a cheese and charcuterie board.

On the other hand, gazing at the vineyard below could leave you longing for some tastings at the region’s lauded wineries — if no designated driver steps forward, staff can arrange a winery tour in a classic car, driven by an in-the-loop guide. An organized tour of Ensenada, a nearby coastal city, will lead you through its colorful streets, seafood scene and stellar waterfront views. The hotel can line up a photography session as part of any of the tours or experiences, so you won’t be short of snaps for the post-trip carousel.

Local restaurants

Good news, gastronomes: Valle de Guadalupe’s fertile soil has cultivated a vibrant fine-dining scene. Set on a scenic winery, Fauna has scooped up accolades for chef David Castro Hussong’s envelope-pushing sharing and tasting menus using seasonal, local ingredients. At Animalón, chef Javier Plascencia spins valley produce into sense-tingling crop-led menus, served out on a peaceful, oak-shaded terrace. For a more laidback lunch, Wa Kumiai Tabita’s traditional Mexican dishes are unfussy and loaded with flavor.

Local cafés

Célida Café is a breezy Ensenada brunch spot, where Mexican staples such as chilaquilestlacoyos and honey-drizzled corn hotcakes are served out in a leafy garden.

Local bars

There’s a surfeit of wineries within easy driving distance. If you’re stumped for where to start, Finca La Carrodilla specializes in organic reds. At family-run Viñedos Solar Fortún, the tasting terrace is framed by 100-year-old oak trees. Craft beer is a lesser known specialty of the region; get with the program at Alta Baja Cervecería, a rooftop taproom that also does a mean cocktail and small plates worth sticking around for.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Mira Earth Studios in Valle de Guadalupe…

At most hotels, you’d be missing out majorly if you never left your room; not so at Mira Earth Studios. That’s not to say Valle de Guadalupe isn’t well worth venturing out into — the region is jewelled with boutique wineries and fine-dining spots, for which concierge staff can sort tours and snag you tables.

But each standalone studio is so in tune with the wild landscape, it’ll rub off on even the most committed loafers. Interiors, minimalist and Mexican-made, let the focus fall on the scenery. Start your morning admiring it from under the covers, hands warmed on a cup of locally roasted coffee. The rest of the day plans itself: each studio has a sauna in the bathroom and a private terrace with a Jacuzzi — neatly sunken, so as not to impede the view; pick out a bottle and an artisanal nibble from the curated selection in your kitchenette, and you’ve got yourself a spa circuit worth staying in for.
