Our favourite rooms

The earthy-hued rooms at Mi Amor let local materials and scenery shine, and you won’t find any screens — though we’re sure you’ll revel in other distractions. If you’re guilty of feeling ‘the fear of missing out’, opt for a Pool View Room to make sure you’re in the know about any poolside parties; if you believe in ‘the joy of missing out’, retreat to a private pool-toting Jungle View Room for a more low-tempo soundtrack. You’ll soak up every-shade-of-blue views in a Seafront Room, where the Caribbean Sea is your blissful backdrop from your balcony or terrace.

Poolside

You’ll (kind of) walk on water at Mi Amor — and no, it’s not thanks to Mayan magic: the split-level pool lies at the heart of the hotel and it’s flanked by wooden walkways, plus its shallows are dotted with pastel-pink tables and floating day-beds. Woven egg chairs and lush tree branches hang over one side, too, so it’s more of a pool to be seen in, rather than swim in

This romantic retreat calls for your other half… Also bring some camera-ready swimwear for poolside photoshoots.

Top Table

On the water-facing terrace or by the floor-to-ceiling windows for a side of sea views while you dine.

Dress Code

During the day, fresh out of the pool flies at this laidback spot; come evening, impress your other half and get spruced up.

Hotel restaurant

International dishes are given a Mexican makeover at the hotel’s poolside restaurant. Days start with an impressive à la carte offering (we won’t tell anyone if you go forgo the virtuous green smoothie in favor of the decadent gruyère omelet or Japanese-style pancakes). It’s an ambient spot from dawn to dusk, and lingering lunches roll into date-night dinners of crudos and ceviches, tacos and tostadas.

Hotel bar

At the hotel’s poolside bar, the combination of hanging egg chairs and mixologist-made tipples creates an enticing lulling effect. Cocktails are customisable — pick your poison, fruit and herb of choice — or go for a house classic such as the Some Like it Hot (tequila, campari, jalapeno, passion fruit) or a mezcal-based Bloody Mary.

Last orders

You can have breakfast between 7.30am and 11.45am; lunch is from noon until 6pm, and dinner is served from 6pm to 10pm. The bar pours from 7.30am to 10.30pm.

Address
Mi Amor
Carrera Tulum-Boca Paila Km. 4.1, Zona Hotelera Tulum, Zona Costera
Tulum

Mexico

Seafront Mi Amor sits on the rugged and quieter end of Tulum’s shores, closer to the town’s ancient Mayan ruins and the protected national park.

Planes

Tulum International Airport is less than an hour’s drive from the hotel; Cancun International Airport is a 90-minute drive. Staff can arrange transfers from either; prices start from US$250 for a one-way trip and the full amount is due in cash when you’re picked up.

Automobiles

There’s no need for your own set of wheels as taxis and transfers are easily arranged, plus there’s limited driving access into the protected archeological area, so the closest carpark to the hotel is about a 10-minute walk away.

Worth getting out of bed for

Romantic escapes bloom in the expert care of love-gurus Mi Amor. Every night is date night: staff can arrange private starlit dinners in one of the hotel’s seafront cabanas, intimate cocktail classes and couples’ spa rituals that conclude with a glass of fizz in a flower-decorated soaking tub for two.

When you’re not gazing into each other’s eyes, you’ll find yourself ogling awe-inspiring ancient ruins: cycle to Tulum’s oceanfront site, scale the main pyramid at jungle-swathed Coba, or take a day-trip to needs-no-introduction Chichén Itzá. Trips to the region’s otherworldly cenotes are just as soul-stirring, with their cavernous rock formations and Mayan heritage. You can swim and snorkel in them — some also have rope swings — or go scuba-diving among Tulum’s colorful reefs to spy sea turtles and rainbow shoals of tropical fish. And migrating whale sharks can sometimes be spied offshore (from May to September). You’ll also get a healthy dose of nature at the vast Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, with bird-watching boat tours and wildlife-spotting walks.

Local restaurants

At beachfront beauty Mezzanine, fresh coconut milk and locally sourced ingredients shine in Thai-fusion plates (and there’s no shame if you have to adjust your spice level from ‘truly Thai’ to ‘tourist’). Fresco’s is a dab hand at day-to-night hosting: come for superfood-rich brunches, stay for lingering lunches and tequila-based sundowners. Swap the Mayan Riviera for the French one at spirited Bagatelle, where premium caviar and fresh ceviche accompany delightful champagne cocktails.

Local cafés

In Tulum town, you’ll find specialty brews and healthy brunches at cafés such as Mera Tulum and Cafeína Tulum.

Local bars

Rooftop bar Ciel Rose is a covetable spot for golden-hour aperitivi, with its signature tipples, sea glimpses and rotating DJ sets. Stardust has been sprinkled over beach club Ziggy’s with its zesty cocktails, fresh Mexican fare and palm-shaded sunloungers.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this adults-only boutique hotel in Mexico and unpacked their crystals and copal incense, a full account of their romantic break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Mi Amor in Tulum…

Things get wet and wild at adults-only Mi Amor, a jungle-framed basecamp that’s perched on Tulum’s tropical shores. The former plays out at the pool — the aquamarine jewel in the hotel’s crown — with its floating day-beds, hanging egg chairs and toes-in-water tables. It’s the idyllic setting for lazy brunches and doe-eyed dinners, where just-caught seafood, internationally inspired plates and creative cocktails will send you head over heels.

Explore your wild side at the several-storied Mayan ruins that dot this mystical peninsula — some overlook the beach, others are enveloped by jungle. Days are spent scaling ancient pyramids, snorkeling with sea turtles or gliding through wildlife-rich waterways on a boat trip.

It’s a destination for thrill-seeking couples, and heart rates will also rise in the screen-free bedrooms, where whispers of sweet nothings are made all the more romantic by the all-natural screensaver from your balcony or terrace, some of which have private pools. Just don’t forget to hang up the ‘do not disturb’ sign...
