Our favourite rooms

Kelly Hoppen interiors ensure all rooms are stylish – spacious, too, starting at a suite-like 50 square metres. Peace-seeking couples will love the thatched beachfront beauty of Prestige Junior Suites, which come with a private Jacuzzi and are set in the adults-only Banyan area. Fitness fiends will love the Wellness Junior Suites, which give you access to a whole host of health-focused activities and amenities. Ground-floor junior suites are smartly dressed in neutral and navy and come with a bathtub looking onto a miniature walled garden. Family suites flaunt ample space and match sophistication with a child-friendly set-up. Or, on an ocean-lapped private beach with its own pool and garden, Lux Villa (which sleeps six) is a butler-serviced showstopper.

Poolside

A tale of two pools, Lux Grand Gaube has a (chlorinated) family pool, near the main beach (and heated in winter), edged by a wooden deck dotted with daybeds and sunloungers. In the adults-only Banyan area, there’s a second ocean-facing pool (no children allowed), fringed by palm trees and also sporting daybeds and loungers and handily near the Rum Tree House and BB’s burger shack.

Spa

Lux Me Spa is ready to revive you from head to toe (Lux Me spa ranges, its products of choice). Its stats are impressive and enough to recommend planning ahead (all facilities require booking): three pools (warm, ambient, cold), 12 treatment rooms, relaxation spaces indoors and out, a steam room and sauna. Check in for a 90-minute signature ritual, including a sugar body scrub, back massage and reflexology, breath work and aromatherapy. This thatch-roofed warren of wellness also has a hair salon and nail bar, plus a barbershop for Mr Smiths (where you can get a whisky with your whisker trim). The gym offers running, cycling, rowing machines and elliptical trainers; its mind and body studio hosts yoga, pilates and meditation classes.

Sustainability efforts

The hotel is involved in a number of practical and educational partnerships to reduce its impact on the environment and give back to the local community: they host regular beach clean-ups, gardeners from the hotel maintain the local football pitch, and the hotel supports fundraising activities with children from Paille En Queue. A junk art workshop welcomes guests of all ages to upcycle waste into something practical or artistic. There are plenty of indigenous and endemic plants and trees in the hotel grounds and Lux Grand Gaube works to conserve these species with help from a local naturalist, who regularly organises talks and tours for hotel guests. The hotel has implemented water, energy and waste-saving measures, with zero plastic and a recycling policy that covers food waste, cooking oil, waste water, glass and paper (filtered drinking water is provided in refillable glass bottles). Eco education comes into play sessions on gardening and cookery for little Smiths, and all restaurants at Lux Grand Gaube offer a significant choice of vegetarian or vegan dishes (on kids’ menus, too). Then it’s your turn: guests are invited to (financially) offset their carbon footprint via Lux’s ‘tread lightly’ programme.

Food and Drink

Top Table

The terrace at Bodrum Blue oozes place-to-be cool and comes with ocean views. Picnic tables beneath a banyan tree at Creole Smokehouse make for a memorable lunch. And any table at upscale Inti feels special.

Dress Code

You’re asked to cover swimwear wherever you dine: opt for flowing linen at Bodrum Blue; cool and casual for the Palm Court and Beach Rouge; save your finery for evenings at Inti. Gents will need longs for dinner and footwear other than flip-flops.

Hotel restaurant

There are enough restaurants at Lux Grand Gaube that you’ll need to stay at least a week… Open-sided, white-timbered Palm Court is open for breakfast and dinner and comprises a pick ’n’ mix of dining stations including South East Asian fare, Italian, a Teppanyaki table, salad bar and dessert stop. Beach Rouge, nearer the sands, is open for lunch and dinner and is a casual spot for salads, burgers, pasta and more. Upscale yacht club vibes accompany Turkish plates at oceanside Bodrum Blue (lunch and dinner). Pitch perfect for a special occasion, dinner-only Inti is the resort’s à la carte Peruvian restaurant – a smart dining room of chandeliers and marble-top tables where you can linger over ceviche and work-of-art tacos. Then there are the resort’s street-truck-style pitstops: Caribbean fare at Creole Smokehouse, burgers from the shack at (lunch only) BB’s and ice-cream served from a converted car-kiosk at Ici.

Hotel bar

An open-sided bar with ocean views, Palm Court is a scenic spot for coffee, soft drinks or alcohol (10am–midnight). Lux loves coffee so much that it has an on-site roastery and brews its own – available at Café Lux beside the lobby (7am–11pm). Whether or not it’s a DJ night at oceanfront Beach Rouge, it’s a great spot for apéro hour or after-dinner drinks – with low-slung chairs and tables on the sand (5pm–midnight). A white-sail awning shades the painted deck jutting out to sea at Bodrum Blue – our recommendation for sundowners (5pm–11pm). Choice is the secret weapon of two further bars: banyan-shaded Rum Tree House is a cabana curating 88 types of rum with special tasting sessions available (6pm–11pm); on the beach, the G&T 100 Club scores a century of gins from across the globe (5pm–10.30pm). The Pisco Bar at Inti is the spot to savour a sour or two before dinner (5pm–11pm). French Kiss at Banyan is a restored Citroën van serving liquid refreshment daytime.

Last orders

The Palm Court is open 7am–10.30am for breakfast. All restaurants serving lunch are open 12.30pm–3.30pm; dinner, uniformly, is served 7pm–10.30pm.

Room service

A dedicated menu is available 24 hours. Villas come with 24-hour butler service.

Worth getting out of bed for

An Indian Ocean playground with balmy temperatures and a bucolic interior, Mauritius has much to offer visitors and the hotel’s concierge can arrange a raft of outings beyond the resort. A trip to Black River National Park brings the chance to swim with bottlenose and spinner dolphins. You can ride horses along the beach from nearby stables in Mont Choisy. Pack balance and bravado for kitesurfing in the lagoon off Palmar Beach. To appreciate Mauritius from the air, book a helicopter or seaplane tour. Dinghy sailing with a qualified skipper will take you to Bernache Island for a picnic on the beach. Or spend a day on a private island featuring cocktails under the filao trees, a beach barbecue, tour of the former governor’s grand villa and snorkelling the island’s shallows. The hotel’s watersports centre has (free) pedalos, kayaks, windsurfers, Hobi cats and stand-up paddleboards: sailing tuition and Scuba diving cost extra, but water-skiing and wakeboarding are both thrown in with your stay. Padel tennis is a cross between tennis and squash; there are four floodlit tennis courts at the resort, plus a bocce ball pitch and volleyball at the beach. And you can also hire bikes to explore the countryside around Grand Gaube.

Local restaurants

There’s little call to venture off-resort in search of restaurants, although a 20-minute drive away you’ll find La Table du Château – a restaurant in the grounds of Château de Labourdonnais, where elegant plates bring together French, Cajun and Creole influences. Also worth the short cab ride, Smith-approved sister hotel Lux Grand Baie has a glamorously appointed Asian restaurant Ai Kisu, which serves dim sum, noodles and dishes such as pepper-spiced snapper and teriyaki tuna, alongside excellent cocktails.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Lux Grand Gaube in Rivière du Rempart

Pleasure is the guiding principle at Lux Grand Gaube, a bells-and-whistles beach resort in north Mauritius. The resort has been a fixture on travel calendars since the Nineties, and a glance at its location on a jungle-shaded peninsula shaped by powder-sand bays easily explains its enduring appeal. Today’s beach resort is a contemporary all-rounder that delivers on style and comfort: Kelly Hoppen’s interiors bring retro beach-club vibes to the hotel’s timber-and-thatch architecture; all rooms are generous in size and come with ocean views. Pleasure, however, has many guises – a variety that Lux Grand Gaube takes in her stride. Couples will be seduced by oceanfront privacy, memorable adventures (seaplane tours, horse riding along the beach and a day on a private island stand out), plus bars and a pool reserved for adults only. Families will fall for its spacious suites, child-friendly beaches and finessed kids’ clubs. Six restaurants cater to every taste – from the chandeliered formality of Peruvian restaurant Inti to the beach-shack charm of burgers at BB’s. Then there are the activities catering to every energy level, from lazy days at the beach, pool or spa, to endorphin-pumping thrills via sailing, scuba, parcours or tennis. Extras such as free water-skiing, yoga and t’ai chi, plus art workshops and cinema have the middle ground covered. However, to offer so much and to deliver it with the attentive service you’d expect from a more boutique stay is Lux Grand Gaube’s most alluring of superpowers.
