Our favourite rooms

Louma Country Hotel’s collection of rooms, suites and cabins are as diverse as the flora and fauna that they pay homage to. For a whimsical storybook-like retreat, we’re hunkering down in a Superior Cabin, with its fire-warmed interiors, bold colour palette and private terrace with an outdoor shower. Romance is in the air in a Premium Suite with its lovey-dovey pink hues, pastel soft furnishings and in-room soaking tub for two; Dewdrop also has a wood-burning stove.

Poolside

Next to the Wellness Barn, you’ll find an outdoor pool that opens seasonally for refreshing dips overlooking verdant cow-grazed countryside. Inside, there’s a second heated pool that’s framed by vaulted wooden ceilings and calls for serene post-treatment swims.

Spa

At the Wellness Barn and Spa, floor-to-ceiling windows flaunt the surrounding fields that roll down to the coast. View-gazing from the pool is a sedative experience, as are sauna sessions, breathwork rituals and bespoke massages in the treatment huts. For something more dynamic, private vinyasa yoga and strengthening Pilates classes are available at the Cow Barn.

Packing tips

A love for the land and a penchant for the wholesome.

Also

The name Louma is a contraction of owners Louis and Emma’s names and is a working farm as well as their family home.

Pet‐friendly

Two dogs can stay in the stone barn and timber stables’ rooms, cabins and Deluxe Studio (£40 for one, £65 for two, bed and bowl included). Louma is a working farm, so you'll need to follow guidelines and tell staff in advance if your pooch is coming. See more pet-friendly hotels in Dorset.

Children

The Two-Bedroom Family Suite sleeps four; there are some interconnecting rooms, and baby monitors and babysitting are available with notice. There’s a large playground and kids can tour the farm, meet the animals or take riding lessons.

Sustainability efforts

Louma is a working, regenerative farm that prioritises soil health, biodiversity and animal welfare. Most of your meals and drinks are home-grown and -made; anything your hosts can’t make themselves is supplied by hyper-local producers. The hotel is proudly plastic-free.

Food and Drink

Top Table

By the fire in the Main Barn or on the terrace looking down to Charmouth.

Dress Code

In your country garb flies at breakfast and lunch, but you might like to swap your Blundstone boots for ballet pumps come evening.

Hotel restaurant

Farm-to-fork isn’t a buzzword at Louma, it’s intrinsic. Before ingredients even reach the kitchen, they’ve been lovingly grown, tended to and harvested by expert hands.

Meals are included with your stay, and breakfast in the Farmhouse Dining Room is a brilliant introduction to the estate’s produce: homemade jams, pork sausages, bacon and pastries sit next to honey from their hives and eggs from their hens. You’ll return here for dinner, when chef Dave Village whips seasonal produce into daily changing menus, but you can expect to find dishes such as smoked Allenbrook trout salad or a rack of lamb with Jerusalem artichokes and crispy potatoes.

The Main Barn hosts lunch, which is served buffet-style with wood-fired meats and pizzas alongside garden salads, local cheeses and house bakes. Down by the pond, communal and private barbecues take place at the braai, with expertly grilled estate-reared meats and just-plucked produce.

Hotel bar

There are various cosy corners to hole up in with a drink, but the Main Barn is set up with a fire-warmed bar. Louma’s passionate winemakers can take you through their cellar — chardonnay, pinot noir, sparkling rosé — in a vineyard-fringed tasting.

Last orders

At the Farmhouse Dining Room, breakfast is between 7.30am and 10am, and dinner is from 6.30pm to 10pm. The Main Barn serves lunch from 12.30pm to 2pm; its bar pours until 10pm.

Rail routes from Exeter and London call at Axminster, which is a 15-minute drive away and staff can organise one-way transfers for £30.

Automobiles

Louma's all-inclusive nature means you might be inclined to stay put, but should you bring your own wheels, Dorset’s quaint towns and dramatic coastline are a short drive away, plus there’s free on-site parking.

Worth getting out of bed for

Louma Country Hotel is proud of its estate and, rightly, wants to show you around every corner. You could start down at the Cow Barn with a private Pilates or yoga class, then swing by the apiary on your way to a tailored-to-you massage or dip in either pool. The outdoor imagination-sparking play area entertains little Smiths, as do all-ages activities such as a farm-animal visit, woodland walk or horseback hack

Garden walks, naturally, vary throughout the seasons: you might visit the seed-sprouting glasshouse in spring, bountiful kitchen garden in August or apple-heavy orchards in October. The estate’s vineyard produces top wines, which you can sample on a tour — which is included with your stay as well as a farm nosey — and tasting; a fine way to pre-empt a convivial braai by the pond.

Local restaurants

You’re unlikely to dine outside of the retreat, given its all-inclusive nature. However, lunch isn’t included on your arrival day, so you could pick up brews and bakes at The Bank House Cafe in Charmouth, share Neapolitan-style pizzas at Bredy Farm’s The Parlour, or tuck into fish and chips at waterfront The Anchor Inn in Seatown.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this arcadian hotel in southwest England and unpacked their foraging tips and seasonal recipes, a full account of their fresh-air-filled break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Louma Country Hotel? in Dorset…

As our name suggests, we’re big fans of hotel-loving couples. Louma Country Hotel? was first bought by husband-and-wife duo, Louis and Emma (‘Louma’ is a portmanteau of their names), as their country pad, but they soon realised that this 100-acre patch of Dorset deserved to be shared beyond their family.

And we’re rather grateful that they flung open their doors, converting their home into this rustic-luxe residence with a green-minded ethos, farmhouse-chic interiors and pastoral Jurassic Coast-glimpsing views. It’s a back-to-nature sanctuary where everyone’s wellbeing is considered: from the vineyard-grazing sheep, to you and your bespoke, at-your-own-pace itinerary.

Every garden-fresh meal is included, plus a tour of the farm and winery, but then the rest is up to you: a convivial barbecue, scenic horseback ride, post-treatment plunge... What’s consistent across the board, however, is the feeling of serenity that comes from reconnecting with the countryside, and in turn, each other.
