Hop from Herdla

Fringed by fjords along Norway’s west coast, sustainable-star Lilløy Lindenberg’s private island setting restores a child-like sense of wonder. You can settle down in one of the Main House’s three rooms or in the standalone, water-watching Boat House, or book the isle in its entirety. Need to know

Rooms

Four, including three in the Main House and one in the Boat House.

Check–Out

11am, and check-in is at 3pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

More details

Rates include a plant-based breakfast, with sweet and savoury picks, delivered to the kitchen or dining area each morning.

Also

Sadly, Lilløy’s rugged and rocky surroundings, which are reached by boat or seaplane, make it challenging for guests with limited mobility.

At the hotel

Private chef on-call, living and dining areas, library bar with books to borrow, record player, Bluetooth speakers, fully equipped kitchen, self-serve island shop, yoga mats, umbrellas, waterproofs, snorkels, kayaks and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: hot water bottles, blankets, free bottled water, bathrobes and organic La Bruket bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Each have their own charm: one is set in the eaves, under the peaked ceilings of the Main House, and another is nostalgic of giggle-soundtracked sleepovers with its twin bed set-up and attaching snug rooms. But our hearts are anchored to the Boat House, for its on-the-water perch and snuggly living space.

Spa

There’s no spa, but you’ll have access to the island’s standalone sauna — infused with hand-picked herbs and fronted by an alfresco cold plunge for invigorating dunks.

Packing tips

A love for nature and willingness to slow down — this island retreat is best enjoyed in the moment.

Also

Keep your eye out for the dates of Lilløy’s well-loved supper club — Kelp Club — that’s hosted throughout the year by your on-call chef, Antje de Vies. It’s filled with locals and visitors alike, who tell tales over polished plates of plant-based fare.

Pet‐friendly

Up to two dogs are welcome to join you for a nightly charge of NOK405 each. See more pet-friendly hotels in Askøy.

Children

Welcome. There are a selection of games and books for little Smiths in the Main House’s library, and cots can be added to rooms on request.

Sustainability efforts

At Lilløy, sustainable practices guide everything down to the final detail. The Boat House and Main House were both carefully restored and rebuilt with original wood; and the sauna and island shop were crafted with hand-collected stones found around the island. Inside, every mattress has been filled with seaweed from the surrounding waters; and ceramics, artwork and furnishings are all made by Bergen-based artisans. Everything is biodegradable, reusable or compostable, low-energy solutions are implemented, and water is very carefully conserved. Chef Antje de Vries picks almost everything for her plant-based dishes from the island’s organic gardens (which are nourished by natural compost and collected rainwater), and anything outsourced comes from her network of local suppliers. You’ll be invited to celebrate Norway’s holidays to learn more about its welcoming culture, and if you decide to help collect rubbish from nearby beaches, you’ll be gifted a voucher for the island shop as a thank you.

Top Table

There's a large communal table attached to the kitchen, fringed with candles and a butter-soft banquette.

Dress Code

Cream-coloured Aran knits, boat shoes and a salty scent.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no restaurant as such at Lilløy, but local chef Antje de Vies delivers her plant-based, ready-to-cook ingredients as and when you need; and she has personally curated the island’s self-serve shop with all the essentials, as well as natural wines, craft beers and all sorts of Norwegian goodies.

If you’re staying in the Main House, there’s a fully equipped kitchen — shared between the four rooms — for you to play head chef, or you can ask Antje and her talented team to take over. The Boat House has its own kitchenette with a hob, but you’re welcome to use the larger kitchen, too.

Hotel bar

There’s a botanical bar in the Main House’s library, with all sorts of teas, as well as an honesty bar just through the hall for all your nightcap needs.

Last orders

Whenever you so please — the island shop is open at all hours.

Address
Lilloy Lindenberg
Midtoyni
Herdla
5315
Norway

In Askøy, on the west coast of Norway, you'll find Lilløy Lindenberg resting on the secluded, Atlantic-surrounded islet of Midtøyni.

Planes

Most European hubs fly direct to Bergen Airport, which is Vestland’s busiest base. Private transfers (NOK1500 each way) can be arranged for the 45-minute drive to Herdla; from there, it’s a five-minute boat ride to Lilløy’s private island location.

Automobiles

The island that Lilløy sits on is so small that cars aren’t allowed. If you’re driving, you can go as far as the boat dock in Herdla and leave your wheels in their free carpark.

Other

There’s space for seaplanes and helicopters to land on the island if you’d rather fly direct.

Worth getting out of bed for

With a private island as your playground, outdoor pursuits are set to fill days; and if you’re staying during the warmer months, the Atlantic-lapped shoreline makes for an enticing starting point. There are kayaks and snorkels to borrow, and wind- or kite-surfing is an adventurous way to admire this west coast archipelago. Local staff are on-hand for guided boat tours between undulating fjords, mushroom foraging outings, green-finger tips in the organic vegetable gardens and private picnics for by-the-sea lunches.

They can also whisk you across to wildlife-rich Herdla for an afternoon in nature, spotting native birds, petting free-roaming sheep and hiking or biking its view-blessed trails. And if all this seclusion has you craving something more cosmopolitan, Bergen is a 45-minute drive away, in all its pastel-painted beauty.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this private-island hotel near Bergen, unpacked their salt sild and stopped asking ‘was that a dream?’, a full account of their Scandi stay will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Lilløy Lindenberg in Askøy…

We must admit that even we couldn’t have predicted that the flatmates-turned-hoteliers behind Smith-approved Lost Lindenberg in Bali would choose a private island in west Norway’s archipelago as the backdrop for their next Earth-kind outpost. But Lilløy Lindenberg is a surprise that has certainly stolen our hearts.

This boutique base’s remote-in-feel landscape is surprisingly accessible — it’s only a drive and short boat ride from Bergen. And with a duo of clapboard-cute buildings housing four deftly designed rooms, its interiors are as striking as the fjords that embrace it. Its Main House has a host of living areas, laden with books and board games; and a shared-between-all kitchen, where the island’s chef delivers foraged, ready-to-cook ingredients — or sautés them herself. Explore Mother Nature’s mark, channel Wim Hof with a cold plunge and sauna, or simply snuggle down, and we're quite sure you’ll feel that flutter, too.
