Set in a restored 19th-century mansion, Le Saint-Rémy brings boho-leaning luxury to Nostradamus’s pretty Provençal birthplace. Not to outdo the village’s famous son, but we’ve some prophecies of our own: we foresee mornings spent strolling Saint-Rémy-de-Provence’s cobblestones, followed by cicada-hummed afternoons around the pool. Hikes through the Alpilles will surely wind up at the spa’s hammam. Our favourite rooms

Take your morning coffee alfresco on the Deluxe Suite’s private balcony. Villa Magnolia, with its four bedrooms and private pool, is a luxurious choice if you’re coming en famille.

Poolside

The hotel has a heated outdoor 12-metre pool. It’s south-facing, so when you emerge from your cocoon-like cabana for a paddle, you’ll catch the best of the day’s sun. There’s also an indoor pool in the spa; both pools are open daily from 9.30am to 7pm.

Spa

Long days under the Provençal sun call for some complexion TLC; and Le Saint-Rémy Spa delivers, with tailored facials and massages from skincare wizards Sothys and QMS. Face duly dewed-up, you can head for the hammam or take up residence with your holiday paperback by the indoor relaxation pool. There’s also a small gym, where you’ll find the standard cardio equipment, and concierge staff can arrange fitness classes or personal training sessions on request.

Packing tips

Come for Van Gogh’s gig and bring oil paints, if you dare — you’ll be gazing at the views that inspired some of his most famous works, after all.

The 1800s mansion was built by a colonel who fell for a local woman and stayed put in Saint-Rémy permanently, so the story goes. Hearts are still at risk of being stolen here; hopeless romantics spend sunset on the rooftop terrace at their own peril.

Hotel restaurant

The hotel’s modern Provençal restaurant Lou Patio spills out into a sun-dappled courtyard, where centuries-old plane trees and the thrum of cicadas set the scene. Chef Nathan Helo works with local growers and scours the market to root his menus firmly in the region’s landscape. Expect plenty of sunny, produce-led dishes such as Saint-Rémy tomatoes with watermelon, elderflower and ginger, and potato and summer truffle millefeuille. And, on this hallowed terroir, it would be a sin not to opt for the wine pairing, too.

Hotel bar

At Achille’s Bar, order a plate of Alpilles goats cheese croquettes and some Camargue oysters before spending the afternoon slinking between the sun-warmed veranda and shaded patio like a very spoiled house cat. Achille’s menu of seasonal sharing plates and signature cocktails is also available on the rooftop terrace, where you’ll have panoramic views across Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to the mountains beyond.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at Lou Patio from 7.30am to 10.30am, lunch from noon to 2pm and dinner from 7pm to 10pm. Achille’s Bar is open from 11am to 11pm, and the rooftop is open from 7pm to 10pm.

Le Saint-Rémy is near the centre of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, a historic market town in the South of France backed by the Alpilles mountains.

Planes

It’s under an hour’s drive from Marseille Provence Airport. Staff can arrange airport transfers on request: €182 is the standard rate, €234 is the weekend, bank holiday and nighttime rate (from 7pm), and it’s €272 for a van transfer.

Trains

Avignon TGV station is a 25-minute drive from the hotel. Staff can arrange station transfers: the standard rate is €65 (€78 on weekends, bank holidays and late at night) and €98 for a van transfer.

Automobiles

There are three private carparks at the hotel. The parking fee is €30 a night; this includes a valet parking service, which is available from 8am to 10pm. Electric vehicle charging is €25 a night.

Worth getting out of bed for

As you explore the sunny squares and mediaeval alleys of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, pop into the village’s indie boutiques and stop at a pavement café to road-test the regional speciality: rosé with a slice of pamplemousse. On Wednesday mornings, the market takes over the village centre, and from late June to early September, there’s a Tuesday night market showcasing locally made crafts.

Starting in the historic village centre, the Van Gogh trail is around an hour-long walking route tracing the places that inspired the artist’s work. It ends at Saint-Paul de Mausole, where Van Gogh painted The Starry Night and Irises during his time as a patient. Other nearby hiking trails ascend the Alpilles mountains. For a gentle cycle, set out for Glanum, a Roman archaeological site where the temple and marketplace are still visible. 

Your surrounding landscape is dotted with wineries, and the concierge team are on call to recommend their standouts for tours and tastings. A guided horse-riding trip through the Camargue can be arranged, and staff can also set up the rental of a vintage Citroën 2CV, Méhari or VW Beetle, so get that Grace Kelly hairscarf ready for a road trip.

Local restaurants

L’Auberge de Saint-Rémy is an atmospheric fine-dining spot, with set menus spun from local market produce by superstar chef Fanny Rey. Your sweet tooth is in safe hands, too — Rey’s partner, Jonathan Wahid, is a champion pastry chef. L’Aile ou la Cuisse serves crowd-pleasing bistro fare, but the real pull is the display case full of home-made pâtisseries — if you’re torn between a millefeuille and a macaron, ‘both’ is always an acceptable answer here. Run by twin brothers from a renowned Saint-Rémy culinary clan, Gus is a friendly, modern spot with a menu celebrating fresh regional seafood.

Local cafés

At easygoing roastery Colette Café they serve exquisite specialty coffee without being precious about it — iced matchas are a summer staple, but you’ll want to try the mocha at least once, if only to take a stab at their secret, slightly spiced recipe.

Local bars

The clue’s in the name at Le Labo, where artfully presented craft cocktails are created with scientific precision and an experimental spirit.

Painterly and pastel-hued, the village of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence formed the backdrop of some of Van Gogh’s most poignant work. And though its modern makeover may suggest otherwise, the mansion that’s now home to luxury hotel Le Saint-Rémy has stood since Vincent sat at his easel. 

Today, its revamp means that while you wait for the muse to strike, you can rotate from poolside rosé to restorative Sothys spa treatments. But timeless Provençal pleasures are abundant here, too: roof-down road trips through the lavender-scented countryside, and leafy alfresco lunches that dawdle on till dusk. By then, you can drift up to the rooftop bar for a view akin to the one that inspired The Starry Night. As the constellations begin to show above the silhouette of the Alpilles, take a moment to be grateful for masterpieces of all scales: those gracing gallery walls, and those — like that millefeuille — destined for the grid.
