Setting

Old-school Saint Sauveur

School-turned-boutique-stay La Mission Hôtel & Spa sits in the historic capital of secluded L'Île d'Yeu. Wild beauty abounds in this oceanswept pocket of France, with arcadian scenery and rugged coastlines never more than a cycle from your lodgings. Back at the hotel, there are more sights to be marvelled: polished interiors in shoreline hues, fire-warmed living spaces, a Nuxe-anoined spa and seasonal, straight-from-the-sea fare — it gets an A+ from us.

Need to know

Rooms

22, including five suites.

Check–Out

11am, and check-in is at 4pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

More details

Rates don’t typically include breakfast, but there’s a daily buffet laid out at the restaurant for €25 each.

Also

La Mission Hôtel & Spa is mostly set on one level, making the majority of areas accessible for wheelchair users. Two of the rooms have also been adapted for guests with limited mobility. Unfortunately, the rooftop bar only has staired access and the swimming pool doesn't have a chairlift.

Hotel closed

The hotel shuts up shop during January and February, before reopening its doors for the season on 1 March.

At the hotel

Electric, regular and child-friendly bikes to hire, two pétanque courts, rooftop billiard table, charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, minibar, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, free glass-bottled water, bathrobes and Nuxe bath products.

Our favourite rooms

All but the Superior Rooms have their own small alfresco spots; but if downtime outdoors is high on your agenda, we’d go for the Suite with Garden and Terrace for its set of sun-dosed loungers and split-level interiors. Couples will be compelled by the Deluxe Terrace Room, a cosy but romantic pick with a duo of chairs outside for starlit evening trysts.

Poolside

Soundtracked by a chorus of swaying vines and lined with weaved sunloungers, the heated outdoor pool sits at the heart of the hotel’s central gardens. It’s open for dips daily between 10am and 7pm, and — for a change of pace — there are pétanque courts and a food truck only steps away.

Spa

The hotel’s small, intimate spa (open 10am to 7.30pm) has partnered with big-wellness-name Nuxe to offer a soothing selection of bespoke massages, anti-ageing facials and full body scrubs. There’s also a hammam and Jacuzzi to bolster post-treatment relaxation.

Packing tips

Bring your game face for afternoons playing pétanque.

Also

There are crates of the Finnish throwing game Mölkky (aka King Kubb) scattered around the grounds for those looking to get into game mode.

Pet‐friendly

Pups under 10-kilogrammes are welcome to join you for free in your room, as well as at the bar and restaurant. See more pet-friendly hotels in L’Île d'Yeu.

Children

Welcome; babysitters are available for between €15 and €20 an hour. The Suite with Garden and Terrace has a tot-tailored set of bunk beds and a double sofa-bed that can be made up on request.

Sustainability efforts

L'Île-d'Yeu puts sustainable tourism first, with hotels on the island contributing however they can. In order to help protect its locale, La Mission Hôtel & Spa has banned single-use plastic, put rigorous waste and water management programmes in place (even the gardens plants are chosen for their tolerance to drought and watered with recycled rainwater) and uses Earth-kind cleaning products throughout.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Enjoy a tête-à-tête in one of the fireside banquettes.

Dress Code

Nautical navy and bathing-belle stripes will suit your coastal setting swimmingly.

Hotel restaurant

In a cosy setting, wrapped in rich reds and bordered by a warming blue-tiled fireplace, La Missionaire puts the island’s ocean larder on display. Menus change frequently, depending on what produce local suppliers have available each day, but typical picks include grilled hake, citrusy ceviche and seared tuna steaks. Lunch is a more relaxed affair, with tapas-style sharing plates and classic comfort food. You’ll also find grab-and-go options, including savoury- and sweet-filled crêpes and galettes at the poolside Food Truck, open seasonally during July and August.

Hotel bar

Rum is the keystone of Bar 1802, the hotel’s club-lounge-like watering hole with cosy, retro interiors and barrels of the Bajan spirit that in-house connoisseurs have spent years sourcing. If you’re new to the amber nectar, free-to-attend masterclasses are available daily. Up at rooftop La Vigie, aperitifs are made all the more enticing by a scene-stealing ocean backdrop and delectable light bites.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7am to 10.30am, lunch is noon to 2.30pm, and dinner is between 7pm and 10pm. Bar 1802 serves from 10am to 2am, and La Vigie opens for the summer season, from May to October.

Address
La Mission Hôtel & Spa
12 Rue de La Missionnaire
Île d'Yeu
85350
France

La Mission Hôtel & Spa is on the small island of L'Île d'Yeu, just off France’s west Atlantic coast, in the Bay of Biscay.

Planes

Your nearest airport is Nantes Atlantique; once you’ve touched down, it's a two hour drive to Port Fromentine, where multiple daily 30-minute ferry crossings will whisk you across to L'Île d'Yeu’s Port Joinville. From there, it’s a 10-minute drive to the hotel.

Automobiles

L'Île d'Yeu is almost completely car-free, so you’ll be best swapping your four-wheeler for one of the hotel’s bikes.

Other

If you’re bringing the chopper, the island has a heliport that you’re welcome to land on. Private transfers can be arranged to take you on to the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Despite its small size, L'Île d'Yeu has plenty of wild corners to explore. Start your morning watching the sun rise over the Pointe des Corbeaux lighthouse; before picking up one of the hotel’s bikes (electric or standard) and cycling down to explore some of the south coast’s beaches — Plage des Soux and Plage des Sabias are scenic, secluded options, even during summer's peak. Or, stick to the trails and take your two-wheeler up to La Meule, a small mediaeval chapel that fronts far-reaching ocean views.

The town of Saint-Sauveur is within wandering distance and has plenty of independent boutiques, like Bissemo (the owners hand-make all their jewellery with shells they’ve collected while travelling), to mooch around. The main market is also worth a visit for its flavourful food stalls, vintage threads and artisanal crafts. Sample a taste of local life with a tour of La Ferme d’Émilie, where you’re welcome to get involved with bee keeping, sheep herding and forest gardening workshops.

Local restaurants

If you find yourself near the port, stop by fellow Smith-approved stay, Les Hautes Mers, for seafood-focused fare and expansive views of the Ker Châlon Bay. Bistro Le Navigateur is another portside pick with fish-based menus and a laidback, locally loved ambience. During the summer, La Ferme d’Émilie cooks up traditional French plates with ingredients grown exclusively on their grounds — the farm shop is open year-round for a taste of its bounty when the restaurant’s shut.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside La Mission Hôtel & Spa in L'Île d'Yeu…

Saint-Sauveur’s whitewashed buildings may at first feel more Santorini than castaway French isle, but once you arrive at La Mission Hôtel & Spa, this hideout will have you falling hard for all-things L'Île d'Yeu.

Mapped out like a cloister, where dashingly dressed rooms and suites embrace a central garden, this offbeat building was first an army barrack under Napoleon III. Since then, the space has lived a multitude of lives (a school, cinema, dance studio and parish hall, to name a few). Hoteliers Michel Delloye and Jacques-Olivier Larant are the latest to tackle its redesign, maintaining many of the architecture’s historic features but freshening interiors with a flamboyant coastal feel that combines shoreline blues, reds and greens with flashes of bold pattern. It’s an aesthetic that pairs well with your arcadian co-ords — which you’re encouraged to explore on one of the hotel’s rent-and-ride bikes.

We’ll let you spend a cosseting afternoon in the spa, an evening at the provenance-first restaurant and take tasting masterclasses at the all-about-rum bar before we say we told you so...
