Hotel restaurant

A warming pair of fireplaces are at either side of the modern open-plan restaurant, where jewel-toned velvet chairs sit at each table and guests can watch the cookery action from the relaxed chef’s table. The menu, dreamed up by chef Emilien Deschamps, gives a revised take on classic French cuisine, with a focus on dishes from the Gascony region. Offerings change with the seasons, but favourites include candied trout with pickled vegetables, roasted blue lobster and duck fillet with candied cherry. For dessert, choose from plates of locally made cheeses or slices of decadent chocolate tart. Daily buffet breakfast – a Continental spread of fruits, viennoiseries, bread, coffee, tea and eggs – is also served in the restaurant.

Hotel bar

The cosy bar is next to the restaurant in the library and is – you guessed it – stocked with local and regional wines. Try a glass of white wine from Cos de la Pagode or have your favourite digestif shaken up on request.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7.30am to 10am, lunch is from noon until 1.45pm and dinner is from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. The bar is open all day until 10.30pm.

La Maison d'Estournel is on a vineyard-surrounded estate by the Gironde Estuary in the Haut-Médoc.

Planes

Bordeaux-Mérignac Airport is about an hour away by car. Private transfers can be arranged for between €130 and €160.

Trains

If you're taking the train from Paris, Bordeaux Saint-Jean station is 90 minutes away by car. Staff can organise private transfers from €150.

Automobiles

Bordeaux is 80 minutes away by car; there’s free on-site parking at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Admire the hotel’s art collection, borrow a book – we suggest a cookery or wine-themed one – to read on the terrace or wander through the bountiful gardens.

Your wine-tasting options over-runneth. Spend an afternoon at Château Pichon Baron, one of the great historic vineyards of Bordeaux; or book (at least 48 hours in advance) a tasting tour of Cos d'Estournel winery. At first-growth estate Château Mouton Rothchild, you’ll find 222 acres of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot vines; the grown-on-site wine is fermented in oak vats (they’re one of the last châteaux in the Médoc to use them) and then matured in new oak casks. À votre santé!

Local restaurants

For a prettily plated dinner of contemporary French cuisine, book a table at Le Saint Seurin. The menu changes with the seasons, but some specialities – stew with crunchy vegetables, salmon in Bordelaise – are available year-round. Pair your dinner with a bottle from the beautifully local wine list, or bring your own newfound favourite. Celebrate something special with dinner at Château Cordeillan-Bages; start with quail-egg-topped mushroom ravioli with herb-crusted duck, move on to mains of rosemary-infused pan-fried scallops or wild hare à la royale, and save room for decadent plates of French cheeses or refreshing slices of fine chocolate with salted shortbread and Moroccan-mint sorbet. Can’t decide? Go for the seven-course tasting menu and enjoy it all.

Be our guest at this beautiful mansion – the once-upon-a-time home of Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, former owner of the eponymously named Cos d’Estournel vineyards. A modern fairy tale of a stay, it’s been warmly renovated and decorated with velvet chairs and original artwork. The rolling vineyard views take centre stage and there’s a pretty alfresco terrace to lounge like the local bourgeoisie with a bottle of Bordeaux until it’s time for your artfully arranged mod-French dinner. Lather (in your in-room bath tub), rinse (with another glass of wine), repeat.
