Spanning a sunny stretch of Caribbean coastline, Ibagari Boutique Hotel in Honduras’ Bay Islands is a jungle-covered hideaway with a whole lot of art. This beachfront bolthole is mostly open-air, so those sea views just keep on coming. Shoes are optional at the sandy-floored restaurant, where you’re advised to book ahead since the locals love it too. If Caribbean views are a dealbreaker, pick any room except the Muan Suite. We particularly love the top-floor Hati Suite for the glimpses of the ocean from the bath tub and the sunlounger on the private deck.

Hotel restaurant

The gorgeously glossy Luna Muna, an all-wood affair right on the shore, serves modern and international dishes, with perfect pastas, sublime seafood and plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans. The house loves a bit of home-made – we’d love to stockpile its hot sauce and aioli. Be sure to book, since the locals can’t get enough. Breakfast is a spread of pancakes, bagels and pastries from the on-site bakery, fruit and eggs, with a juice of the day.

Hotel bar

There’s a bar at Luna Muna, where the cocktail prize goes to the expertly muddled mojito – but if mint’s not your thing, ask the bar staff to work their magic.

Last orders

Food and drinks are available all day: breakfast is served from 7.30am until 11am; then it’s a lunch menu until 5pm, when dinner service runs until 9.30pm.

Room service

Breakfast can be served in your room if you prefer, along with salads, ceviche, sandwiches and spaghetti later in the day.

Ibagari is on the Bay Island of Roátan in Honduras, close to both the beaches of West Bay and the buzzy bars of the West End.

Planes

Juan Manuel Gálvez airport on Roátan is closest; the drive should take around 25 minutes. Hotel transfers are US$100 for a round-trip with drinks thrown in.

Automobiles

The biggest city on Roátan, the capital of the Bay Islands department, is Coxen Hole, 25 minutes away by car. There’s a car park at the front of the hotel, but visitors should avoid side roads in remote areas, and be prepared for lots of truck traffic and poor road conditions on the mainland.

Worth getting out of bed for

Scuba-diving on the resident reefs is Roatán’s biggest draw and luckily you won’t have to go far: Ibagari has its own dive centre and expert guides at Duna Divers. You’ll also be able to pick up serious skills in local Garifuna dance, bottle-painting and Honduran cooking. As well as a submarine sojourn to Roatán’s reefs, the hotel can assist with paddle-boarding, kayaking and snorkelling, and guide you to the best hiking trails and nature reserves. Golfers can tee off at the Black Pearl course in the Pristine Bay Resort; and thrill-seekers can throw themselves through a jungle canopy at South Shore Zipline. Dive with dolphins (or pose for the camera with the smiling cetaceans in a photo-shoot – yes, really) at the Roátan Institute for Marine Sciences. Pigeon Cay Beach on the east end of the island is only accessible by boat – don’t forget your snorkels. Blend your own rum at the Roatán Rum Company, which has been distilling sugarcane since 1765.

Local restaurants

For tapas with a Med via the Ottoman Empire flavour, try Por Qué No? on West End Road, where you can also pick up bakery essentials – and some handmade jewellery. Down the road, see why the locals love Anthony’s Chicken (and it’s not just for the bargain prices). Enjoy freshly caught seafood such as seared tuna with Sriracha aioli at Roatán Oasis on Carretera Principal in the West End; or check out the biggest wine selection on the island and the daily changing menu at the Roatán Pearl.

You might not know about Roatán, but you should: this island off Honduras’ Caribbean coast offers an extra low-key, superlatively laid-back side to this sun-favoured part of the world. And at Ibagari, you’ll find your island home from home, all gleaming glossy wood, white walls to frame the foliage and an art collection that’s basically a gallery. Luna Muna serves seafood with sea views and, since half the floor is sand, shoes are optional. Guests are given priority but the locals love it too, so be sure to book – and don’t miss a sundowner first in the sand-pit for grown-ups right next to the restaurant. Ready to explore? The Duna Divers squad will take you on a submarine adventure and can train you up to varying levels of scuba skills, even if you’re aiming for rescue-team standards. And if laying back and enjoying the scenery is more your speed, the setting can’t be beaten: Ibagari is on a quiet patch of West Bay, a winding, jungle-canopied drive from the island’s airport – and the greenery continues throughout.
