At the hotel

Parlor, furnished courtyard and free WiFi throughout. In studios: Sonos sound system, climate control, free bottled water, Dyson Supersonic hairdryer and Frama bath products. Some also have wet bars with microwaves and mini-fridges.

Our favourite rooms

All eight are distinct in design and layout: some feature wet bars, others in-room bath tubs and arched living areas. Studios Five, Six, Seven and Eight are all set above the bar, so may be a little louder until quiet hours start at 1am; and One, Two and Three are smaller but more peaceful, with lofty windows that face out to the west, bathing rooms in orange tints come sunset.

There’s no restaurant at Hotel No Vacancy, but the Crossroads Arts District’s revered selection of eateries more than make up for it. 

Hotel bar

A low-lit, red-brick exterior and well-dressed queue usually signal the start of Le Lounge's ever-popular evening shift. The hotel bar is set in what would be the lobby, trading a check-in desk for a mahogany-toned bar, where elevated cocktails, wines and beers flow amid louche interiors and live jazz sets.

Last orders

Le Lounge is open Wednesday to Saturday until 1am (from 6pm, Wednesday to Thursday and 4pm, Friday to Saturday).

Room service

There are wet bars in some rooms, but otherwise, ordering in from local restaurants is your best bet for in-room dining.

In western Missouri, on the southern edge of downtown Kansas City, Hotel No Vacancy occupies a historic red-brick building in the Crossroads Arts District.

Planes

Kansas City International Airport is your nearest and has plenty of cabs to hail for the 25-minute drive to the hotel.

Trains

The free KC Streetcar connects River Market to Crown Center — your nearest stop is around two blocks away on the corner of 19th & Main. For long-distance trains, Amtrak routes stop at Union Station, which is a five-minute drive or 10-minute streetcar ride from the hotel.

Automobiles

Easy-to-use public transport makes cars an unnecessary addition in this city. If you're set on bringing your own wheels, there’s free street parking (from 6pm on weekdays and all-day at weekends) nearby, plus an overnight carpark on 17th Street for $5 an hour, capped at $19 for the night.

Worth getting out of bed for

The prohibition era proclaimed Kansas City the ‘Paris of the Plains’ — less so for its pretty boulevards than its underground jazz scene and love for liquor. That vivacity still pulses through downtown today, with historic institutions like the Mutual Musicians Foundation keeping old-school jazz alive. Pivot from 18th & Vine over to the Crossroads Arts District and you’ll find more cultured crowd-pleasers, including the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, home to beloved restaurant Café Sebastienne.  

Shoppers won’t need to put in much of a rack-rummaging shift at Daisy Lee, Mergers and Blackbird Collection, thanks to their perfectly curated selections of vintage clothes, homeware and jewelry. Liberty Memorial provides panoramas that are particularly striking at sunset; Loose Park and its Japanese gardens offer another scenic patch; and for suburban sights, Parkville Nature Sanctuary has stretches of wooded hiking trails and picturesque waterfalls. 

Local restaurants

Novel has all the makings of a good story: a rarefied setting in a converted Crossroads warehouse, an intimate atmosphere, and seasonal New American plates with plenty of character. For award-winning Italian favorites, Farina has earned star status for its house-made pasta, oyster bar and lengthy wine list. Kata Nori Hand Roll Bar satisfies fresh-fish cravings further still with a playful selection of sushi, assembled by hand at its open counter. 

Local cafés

Coffees come with homemade biscuits and gravy at Take Care by Oleo. Mildred’s Food + Drink rolls out similarly American menus with breakfast sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches, bagels, chipotle wraps and strong brews. 

Local bars

Black Dolphin Lounge carries the torch for KC’s late-night jazz scene, pairing its musical schedule with cocktail-focused menus and a contemporary feel. For specialty spirits, Mean Mule Distilling Co serves their punchy pours in creative concoctions and tasting flights.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel No Vacancy in Kansas City… 

Whether you consider its name a self-fulfilling prophecy or not, there’s no denying that Hotel No Vacancy has plenty of staying power. In part, perhaps, due to its coveted setting in Kansas City’s Crossroads Arts District, where independent galleries, boutiques, cult restaurants and a storied jazz scene animate the streets. 

Though alluring, its surroundings are only part of this boutique hotel's picture. Once a film studio, the restored 1920s building now houses eight apartment-style spaces, each individually designed with calming earthy tones and soaring crittall windows, offset by antique furnishings collected by the owner during his travels. Some rooms have their own wet bars, others come with opulent clawfoot bath tubs and sunset-watching views. There’s a parlor and courtyard for idling between wanders; and after dark, Le Lounge draws downtown’s coolest crowds for its sultry atmosphere and live jazz nights. Call it a case of fate, if you will.
