Our favourite rooms

The Sixties mountain lodge vibes of the exterior continue on into rooms, where natural wood, dark greens and mid-century details add warmth and sophistication — especially in those with gas fireplaces. Lakeside Doubles are situated on the lower level, giving you direct access to the shoreline, while those on the upper floors have balconies with great views of the lake. We love the Third Wheel best, though, with its chunky twin bunk reachable via a ladder above the mainbed, evoking bygone mountain adventures.

Poolside

A lot of the action at Hotel Marina Riviera is centred on the huge pool deck and terrace. Open throughout the year, the peanut-shaped heated pool is flanked by a large hot tub, and nearby is a cylinder-shaped sauna for up to four.

Spa

Satisfying aches and pains from hiking or biking can be eased at the hotel’s spa, where full-body massages are administered in the private treatment room and happy sighs are the sauna’s soundtrack. After a cold plunge, warm up in the showpiece cylindrical sauna out on the terrace, which has a window overlooking the lake.

Packing tips

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia was set in the San Bernardino valley, and its shooting script reads like a novel, so bring a copy with you to really feel like a location scout at large.

Also

In winter, there’s a convenient shuttle service from the hotel to the foot of the ski area.

Pet‐friendly

Up to two dogs are welcome for a daily charge of $100 each. The hotel provides doggy treats and asks that owners never leave their pups unattended. See more pet-friendly hotels in San Bernardino County.

Children

Families are very welcome. Many rooms have sofa-beds or bunks and the cabins are ideal for bigger groups. Having said that, there are no creche or babysitting facilities available.

Sustainability efforts

You’ll find organic, sustainably produced body care products in each room as well as Earth-friendly toilet rolls from PlantPaper. Ethically sourced tea and water in glass bottles are also provided, with a water station for refilling. Outside, there are six charging stations for electric vehicles.

Worth getting out of bed for

With all eyes on the lake, it’s no surprise that watersports are the focus at Hotel Marina Riviera. The romantic option is to charter a boat for a sunset cruise. But romance takes many forms: for you it might be jet-skiing or flyboarding across the water, kayaking or paddleboarding together, or kicking back on fishing trips — all are possible from Big Bear Marina. On dry land, the Castle Rock and Pine Knot hiking trails take in quiet forest and show-stealing vistas, and the Alpine Pedal Path makes for a relaxed bike ride along tranquil shores. Come nighttime, the skies are great for stargazing.

Families can encounter rescued wildlife such as eagles and mountain lions at the Alpine Zoo at Moonridge, and Southern California’s only bobsled experience, the Alpine Slide, is nearby at Magic Mountain. In case of bad weather, enjoy vintage bowling with bumpers, arcade games and plenty of retro charm at The Bowling Barn.

Just a few minutes’ stroll from the hotel, Big Bear Village is dotted with standalone artisan stores selling handmade candles, stained-glass crafts, outdoor apparel and all manner of creative curios.

Local restaurants

You certainly won’t go hungry in Big Bear. For families, Teddy Bear restaurant is a laidback spot where friendly staff dish up plates of homemade chicken pot pie and turkey avocado melts. Then there’s Tropicali, specialising in a fusion of flavors from Hawaii and Japan such as poke bowls, sushi and other Pacific-inspired dishes. Sweet Basil Bistro is a more intimate affair but with a menu of no-less-filling meals; we’re talking lobster lasagna, gorgonzola-stuffed filet mignon and mushroom truffle pasta.

Local cafés

Absolutely caked in stickers and logos of all kinds, Big Bear institution The Grizzly Manor Cafe is the place to fill up on hearty breakfasts of hash browns and eggs three ways before big hikes or ski sessions. Dank Donuts does a colorful line of classics as well as vegan and gluten-free donuts; and its new section, Moonridge Deli, serves up fresh-sliced Boar's Head meat and cheeses in creative sandwiches.

Local bars

Wine and cider tastings, accompanied by sharing platters overflowing with cheese and charcuterie, bring locals and out-of-towners back for more at Barrel 33 in the village.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this lakeside lodge by Big Bear Lake and unpacked their Canyon Creek mushrooms and small-batch fig preserve, a full account of their away-from-it-all break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel Marina Riviera in San Bernardino County…

The Casetta group’s love of place is evident in their inspired restorations of Cali hotels Casa Cody in Palm Springs and The Surfrider in Malibu. The same is true of Hotel Marina Riviera in Big Bear Lake. Evoking old Californian charm recalibrated for 21st-century travelers, the group’s design team have refitted the Sixties skeleton of this motel-style stay with gorgeous mid-century details. The hotel maintains a private stretch of the lake’s shoreline and a sprawling terrace with fire pits overseeing it all.

It’s within a two-hour drive of LA, too; a fact not lost on Hollywood’s Golden Era tycoons who made use of the area’s natural beauty in countless westerns and epics such as Gone with the Wind. And you can see why. Blissful walking trails are in abundance, there are scenic trips out on the lake, and families will love its ambling proximity to adventure-fuelled activities.
