Setting

Calanques-framed Cassis

There’s a Wes Anderson quality to Hôtel Liautaud in halcyon port town Cassis. Its tomato-red sign crowning the tiled roof, street-level brasserie dressed up with fluttering awnings, and retro-chic rooftop terrace — backdropped by sunsets and the Med in widescreen — are its most compelling snapshots. And with a pétanque court out front, beach-within-reach locale and low-key approach to service, this poised pied-à-terre is set to be a cult classic.

Our favourite rooms

You’re a stone’s throw from the water at Hôtel Liautaud — the port is on your doorstep, and the main beach is just beyond the pétanque court out front. Room 208 is a Suite that overlooks the small marina, with all-eyes-on-the-prize views of the aquamarine-streaked Mediterranean from its balcony; room 209 brings a different vantage point, looking out to the impressive, hilltop castle instead.

Spa

Staff can arrange treatments with local therapists on request, either in your room or at a nearby spa.

Packing tips

Breton stripes and a woven tote to channel Brigitte Bardot, who fell in love with Cassis in the Fifties — her winged eyeliner and beehive are less well-suited to beach days.

Dress Code

Cool-hued pieces in shades of green and blue will contrast well with the hotel’s peach-sorbet interiors.

Hotel restaurant

Café Liautaud is inspired by traditional, French brasseries but has been given a mod-Med makeover. Out on the streetside terrace, under the cream awning and backdropped by pistachio-green window frames, you can tuck into chef Katy’s lunchtime offerings, before crêpes, cocktails and coffees that will fuel afternoons in port. Breakfast is included with your stay, and while the café has pastries to snack on, you’ll find a full spread with all your day-starting classics at the hotel’s first-floor lounge, overlooking the port.

Hotel bar

Spritzes and bières are paired with people-watching at neighbourhood hangout Café Liautaud. Rooftop Liautaud opens seasonally (from April to September, 5pm to 10pm) for sea-gazing sundowners.

France

South of Marseille in Provence, Hôtel Liautaud sits in the corner of Cassis’ pretty port, a stroll from waterfront restaurants and the beach.

Planes

Marseille Provence Airport is under an hour’s drive from the hotel and staff can arrange transfers on request.

Trains

Rail routes from Marseille, Nice and Paris call at Cassis station, which is a 10-minute taxi ride from the hotel.

Automobiles

Cassis is walkable, but wheels are useful if you wish to tour the calanque-studded coastline. The hotel has a few dedicated parking spaces for €25 a night, but you'll need to reserve one in advance. Otherwise, Parking Mimosas is your nearest public option.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’ll glimpse the sea from Hôtel Liautaud’s streetside brasserie and rooftop terrace, but get a closer look from Plage de la Grande Mer, a short stroll behind the pétanque court that sits in front of the hotel (ask staff for kit to borrow). Your hosts can also arrange tennis or padel lessons at nearby courts, though there are plenty of picturesque ways to stay active in Cassis. Cycle up to Cap Canaille, a biodiversity reserve with views over the bay; day-trip to Les Gorges du Verdon for wild swimming in its emerald-green waters; or hike on coastal trails to various calanques — pristine coves that are carved into the cliffs. To take in the latter in more kick-back-and-relax style, opt for a helicopter tour or boat trip. Aix-en-Provence and Marseille are each a 50-minute drive away for more cosmopolitan pursuits.

Local restaurants

Le Poisson Rouge is a catch for a creative take on Mediterranean favourites, with plenty of seafood in the mix. Polished, Italian-inspired dishes at Ô Rev make it a dreamy spot for dinner in Cassis. Michelin-starred La Villa Madie wows with its tasting menus and delicately presented plates, which will compete with the stellar sea views for your attention.

Local cafés

Brush shoulders with locals as you grab a café au lait or noisette from Grain de Folie.

Local bars

Alfresco is the way to go for sundowners or lingering lunches at beachfront Le Grand Large. Cosy wine bar La Maison de Jo et Gaby will make you feel at home with its warm service, regional cheese and charcuterie, and hand-picked French wines.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this bijou boutique hotel in Cassis and unpacked their woven baskets and oversized sunglasses, a full account of their coastal break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hôtel Liautaud in Provence…

For a petite port town south of Marseille, Cassis sure has some names to drop: Brigitte Bardot tried to buy its château, but its monks refused to sell it to her because of her so-called reputation; Virginia Woolf, when staying with her sister and others from the Bloomsbury Group, described it as ‘a little paradise’.

And so, Hôtel Liautaud feels like a suitably inspiring addition to this cultural, coastal town. Its soft-hued bedrooms flaunt views of the castle or distant water, which you can also admire from the breakfast lounge, with a board game, café au lait or cocktail as your companion. The convivial café is primed for people-watching; on the rooftop terrace, it’s the Provençal sunset that’ll draw your gaze.

Days in Cassis unfold with cinematic charm, too — measured in games of pétanque, beach outings and forays to nearby calanques that are guaranteed to spark creativity for your next screenplay or novel (or journal entry).
