Setting

Just off Las Ramblas

Hotel España Ocean Drive has been holding court in Barcelona since 1859, when it first opened as a cultural meeting point — and it still draws a clued-up crowd. Modernista details remain front and centre, from mermaid murals to statement marble, but its present-day pulls seal it: a Michelin-starred kitchen under Martín Berasategui and a rooftop terrace primed for poolside sundowners. You’re right between Raval and the Gothic Quarter, so stepping out rarely means slowing down.

Need to know

Rooms

82, including one suite.

Check–Out

Noon, and check-in is at 3pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

More details

Rates include a generous buffet breakfast with à la carte options, including eggs-to-order and local charcuterie platters.

Also

Two Superior Rooms are adapted for guests with limited mobility, but while lifts reach most areas, some parts of the historic building aren’t fully wheelchair-friendly.

At the hotel

Rooftop terrace, 24-hour concierge, charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, Marshall Bluetooth speaker, air-conditioning, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and Typology bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Rooms here are anything but pared-back, with saturated hues — deep blues, oxblood reds and mustard yellows — layered against patterned fabrics, dark woods and decorative detailing that nods to the building’s Modernista roots. The top-floor rooms are the main draw, lifting the mood with more light and far-reaching views: the Deluxe with Terrace has a private, outdoor suntrap, outsized only by the Ramblas Suite with its own living room (and the only bathroom with a rolltop tub).

Poolside

Set beneath slatted canopies and framed in warm clay tones, the rooftop pairs a slim plunge pool with long, cushioned banquettes and hand-laid tiles. Ceiling fans stir the heat in the afternoons; by dusk, it’s all amber light, cocktails and low-key DJ sets.

Spa

There’s no spa on site, but the hotel partners with nearby Gimnasio Cem Colom, just a five-minute walk away, for workouts and wellness sessions.

Packing tips

Bring shoes that won’t slip on mosaic tiles to take you from vermouth hour to late-night tapas. And some bright, bold swimwear to make the most of the rooftop pool.

Also

The hotel’s buzzy events calendar, with regular DJ sets, art exhibitions and food-led experiences, draws creatively inclined locals.

Pet‐friendly

One small dog (weighing up to 10 kilogrammes) is welcome to stay in any room for €35 a night, which includes treats, bowls and a bed. See more pet-friendly hotels in Barcelona.

Children

All ages are welcome. Deluxe rooms sleep a third guest on a sofa-bed, and cots can be added to most rooms for free.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Anywhere with a view of the tiles and arches — this is a room worth looking up in.

Dress Code

This is no place for neutrals, so bring something smart that can stand up to tiles and murals.

Hotel restaurant

The headline act is Michelin-starred Restaurant Fonda España, set in a richly dressed Modernista dining room — originally decked out by influential Spanish architect, Lluís Domènech i Montaner — of intricate tilework and elegant arched ceilings aglow with giant chandeliers. Chef Martín Berasategui (with a mere 12 Michelin stars to his name) sets the tone, with Edu Rodas executing a menu that leans into bold, ingredient-led cooking: L’Escala anchovies, artichokes with cured yolk, inky cuttlefish rice with cod kokotxa, and slow-cooked meats sourced from farmers’ markets.

Breakfast is taken in the Sirens Lounge, where Catalan artist Ramon Casas’ mural of mermaids flows across tiled walls, and a wavy glass ceiling filters the light into something soft and sea-like.

Hotel bar

From low-lit corners to rooftop panoramas, the hotel’s trio of bars means you’re never short on refreshments. Dorita Cocktail Bar is the liveliest — checkerboard floors, glossy tiles and an oversized, plant-topped banquette — pouring vermouth-led signatures, citrusy concoctions and well-judged classics. Behind it, speakeasy-style Dorita Club is made for the late hours with its softly glowing panels and spirit-forward tipples. Up top, the OD Skybar shifts things into the open air — spritz in hand, sun dipping behind the rooftops, and DJ sets easing the terrace into an after-dark atmosphere.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7.30am to 10.30am, with all-day dining options available after. At Fonda España, lunch is from 1pm to 3pm (Wednesday to Friday), and dinner from 8pm to 10pm (Wednesday to Saturday).

Room service

Available from a dedicated menu.

On the edge of El Raval, Hotel España Ocean Drive sits in the heart of old Barcelona just off the lively Las Ramblas, placing you steps from the Gothic Quarter’s winding lanes.

Planes

The nearest airport is Barcelona–El Prat Airport, around 20 minutes away by car. Transfers can be arranged on request through the hotel.

Trains

From Barcelona–El Prat Airport, trains run every 30 minutes into the city, or you can take the Aerobús shuttle, which departs every 15 minutes; both stop at Plaça de Catalunya, a 10-minute walk from the hotel. This is also your nearest station, connecting you to metro and bus lines across the city. Longer journeys to hubs such as Madrid, Valencia and Zaragoza depart from Barcelona Sants railway station, a 20-minute taxi away.

Automobiles

You won’t need a car to get around Barcelona, thanks to its walkable centre and well-connected public transport. There’s no parking at the hotel, but nearby options include carparks at Plaça dels Àngels and Rambla del Raval if you decide to drive.

Worth getting out of bed for

Set just off Las Ramblas, Hotel España Ocean Drive puts you within easy reach of both headline sights and quieter corners of the old city. A few minutes’ stroll brings you to the ever-busy Mercat de la Boquería — sensory overload is part of its appeal — and into the Gothic Quarter, where narrow lanes open onto hidden squares and centuries-old landmarks, including Plaça del Rei and Plaça Reial. Culture runs deep here: the Museu Picasso and Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) are both close by, offering a contrast between old masters and cutting-edge works.

Then there's El Raval’s lesser-trodden streets for browsing independent galleries, bookshops and the serene courtyard of the Biblioteca de Catalunya. A little further afield, Gaudí’s Sagrada Família and the mosaic-clad Park Güell are essential pilgrimages, plus Parc de la Ciutadella for a leafy pause from the city’s buzz.

Local restaurants

With Raval on one side and the Ramblas on the other, you’re well placed for a varied spread of nearby dining. At Cañete, pull up a stool for razor clams, jamón croquetas and silky tortillas in a lively, shoulder-to-shoulder setting. Around the corner, Suculent serves rich broths and slow-cooked meats by candlelight. For something more tucked away, Arume is a local favourite for Galician plates such as grilled octopus and comforting rice dishes.

Local cafés

Origo Bakery is worth the short walk for its excellent sourdough and laminated pastries — pick up the Mico, a croissant-dough hybrid with browned butter, coffee syrup and lemon zest that’s already something of a house signature.

Local bars

Once the hotel’s rooftop bar starts winding down, there are plenty of spots to continue your night. The natural wine list at neighbourhood favourite Bandini’s goes impressively heavy on Catalan bottles. For palate-challenging cocktails, push behind Paradiso’s pastrami-shop fridge door and try concoctions of whisky, lavender, truffle honey and Manchego cheese.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this made-over Modernista hotel just off Las Ramblas and unpacked their custom-designed espadrilles and market-sourced trinkets, a full account of their Catalan city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel España Ocean Drive in Barcelona…

Designed by Modernista master Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Hotel España Ocean Drive’s marble columns, intricate mosaics and that carved alabaster fireplace feel as considered now as they did over a century ago — the recent refurbishment simply brings them back into focus. Where its Smith-approved siblings in Madrid, Seville and Talamanca keep things clean-lined and contemporary, this Ocean Drive stay goes all in on colour, pattern and period detail.

Then there’s everything in between: historic courtyards, tiled corridors and a sequence of lounges that give the building real depth. Dining and drinking aren’t confined to one space — they ripple through the hotel, from mermaid-framed breakfasts to Michelin-starred dinners. Without taking on any of neighbouring Las Ramblas’ chaos, this calming crashpad deftly mirrors Barcelona’s vibrant swirl beyond its gilded doors.
