Every room is airy and a good size, but the Sky Executive Deluxe Rooms have the best views of the city through floor-to-ceiling windows. Ask for a corner room to maximise the sweeping skyline spectacle.

Poolside

The rooftop infinity pool – the highest in the city – offers sweeping skyline views. For guests only, the pool has a swim-up bar with submerged bar stools, though there are plenty of surrounding sunloungers for those who want to dry off.

Spa

The serene Le Spa des Artists draws from European and Vietnamese influences for massages, facials and beauty treatments. There is also a well-stocked fitness centre with elliptical machines and yoga essentials.

Hotel restaurant

The hotel has three exceptional restaurants. On the 23rd floor, the upscale Social Club, run by Chef Egidio Latorraca, serves seasonal dishes inspired by European flavours in a wood-panelled space designed by Japanese firm Super Potato. Open for dinner only, the restaurant serves dishes like truffle gnocchi, signature ratatouille and charcoal-grilled options like Australian wagyu beef, with a coconut soufflé for dessert. The bustling Saigon Kitchen Restaurant is inspired by Asian street food markets, serving Indochine and Western dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner from a central open kitchen surrounded by tables. The menu includes traditional Vietnamese options like pho, caramelised chicken wings and grilled pork with vermicelli noodles, along with an assortment of pan-Asian and Western bistro dishes. More of a lounge than a full restaurant, Café des Beaux Arts is open all day, but especially popular for lunch and afternoon tea, serving traditional Vietnamese coffee, tea and light bites, including summer rolls and sandwiches.

Hotel bar

There are two. The beautifully carved wood bar at Social Club dates to 1901, which makes a fitting backdrop to the jazz music and classic cocktails with a twist, including a menu inspired by YSL fragrances. Upstairs, the Social Club Rooftop Bar is a pool bar open from 9am until 1am, with icy wine and beer, and excellent all-day cocktails.

Last orders

At Saigon Kitchen, breakfast is served from 6am to 10.30am on weekdays (11am on weekends); lunch is offered from noon to 2pm and dinner from 6pm to 10pm. At Social Club, dinner is served from 5.30pm to midnight.

Tan Son Nhat International Airport is a 45-minute drive from the hotel, with direct flights to major cities around the world, including Hong Kong, Melbourne and London.

Trains

There’s train service from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, though it takes around 36 hours. The overnight train to Da Nang is a relaxed way to see the countryside, ideally in a soft-berth sleeper cabin. Saigon Railway Station, a bustling hub, is in District 3, a 15-minute drive from the hotel.

Automobiles

Driving in Ho Chi Minh city is chaotic at best, and anyone brave enough to hop behind the wheel should be prepared to navigate the thousands of traffic-sign-defying scooters seemingly flying in every direction.

Worth getting out of bed for

With impressive art, exceptional food – including a destination-worthy champagne brunch – and sweeping skyline views from the rooftop pool, Hotel des Arts has plenty to entice right on site. Luckily, the central location makes it easy to explore the best of Ho Chi Minh City, including its cathedral, the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica. Three blocks from the hotel, the sweeping Saigon Central Post Office looks more like a Parisian train depot than a place to post parcels. An 1880s monument to colonial architecture, the perky yellow structure includes a vaulted ceiling, archways lining the façade and other nods to French, Renaissance and East Asian design.

As busy as traffic can be in Ho Chi Minh City, it’s also great for pavement-pounding. Head a kilometre from the hotel to Nguyen Hue, a popular promenade lined with shops, restaurants and the Cafe Apartment, a nine-storey, converted mid-century complex that is now a stack of cafés, boutiques and co-working spaces, many with street-facing balconies that are ideal for sipping a Vietnamese iced coffee. Ask the concierge to book a day trip to see the legendary Củ Chi tunnel: a vast 75-mile, subterranean web used by the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, featuring impressively narrow passages that intrepid visitors can try to crawl through.

Local restaurants

Set in a converted art deco vila, Home Finest Saigon updates traditional dishes from throughout Vietnam, including spring rolls, tiger prawns and stir-fried duck. The homey Old Compass Cafe is open from breakfast through dinner, serving traditional Vietnamese dishes, including bánh mì sandwiches that are best as a combo with a coffee, coconut water or local beer. Tucked several flights above street level on a lushly decorated roof terrace, Mountain Retreat conjures the feel of a tropical jungle escape, with bamboo furniture and decor. The traditional menu includes claypot fish and steamed rice rolls. Take a table on the terrace for views and a nice breeze.

Local bars

Ho Chi Minh City is a great drinking destination, with casual watering holes and a great craft-beer scene. Head up to the 52nd floor of the Bitexco Financial Tower for Eon Heli Bar's unbeatable city views, with live music and cool cocktails. A few blocks from the hotel, Biacraft has the largest beer selection in the country, including many made with Vietnamese fruits.

The cool 168-room tower in buzzing District 3 rises above Vietnam’s biggest city, showcasing the lights, people and whirring traffic through sweeping views.
