Hôtel Bleu is a smartly turned-out seaside stay on the Côte Bleue, where the only schedule worth keeping is the tide table. Anchored on Carry-le-Rouet’s marina, this yacht-inspired vessel ensures every room looks out to sea, pairing salt-sprayed views with minimalist Mediterranean design, shore-to-spoon dining and a Phytomer spa devoted to algae-rich rituals. Our favourite rooms

Choosing a favourite here is a pleasant dilemma, since every room comes with sea views and almost all have a balcony looking out over the marina. For the full Côte Bleue experience, we’d push the boat out for one of the suites, where a private furnished balcony and a proper bath tub up the ante. That said, even the entry-level cabins deliver a yacht-smart feel, with nautical details, coastal art and the Mediterranean glint always in sight.

Poolside

Docked above the marina, the glassy edge of Hôtel Bleu’s infinity pool (open seasonally from the 1 May to 30 September) melts into masts, bobbing bows and endless Côte Bleue hues beyond. Stretch out on yacht-worthy loungers, order something cold and citrussy from the pool bar, and watch the harbour drift lazily by — no sea legs required.

Spa

Downstairs, the Phytomer spa (open daily from 10am to 8pm) offers a calm, cocooning counterpoint to the sparkle of the harbour, with marine-powered facials and body treatments that harness the restorative alchemy of the sea. Sink into a single or duo treatment cabin, then drift on to the hammam or Jacuzzi — all abyssal blues and softly steaming air — where body and mind are gently coaxed back into sync, one ocean-infused ritual at a time.

Packing tips

Pack as if you might be accidentally invited onto a yacht — if it wouldn’t look right leaning against a sailboat railing at golden hour, it can probably stay at home.

The spa experience flows seamlessly back to your room, where Phytomer bath products — infused with the restorative power of algae, seawater and ocean minerals — bring a little of the Côte Bleue’s marine magic to your daily soak or post-swim refresh.

Children

All ages are welcome at Hôtel Bleu, though clans will be happiest in the spacious Family Suite, a sea-facing setup with a sofa-bed in the living area.

Bag a table on the glass-fronted terrace, where the harbour laps right up to the edge and, with boats bobbing at eye level, you’ll feel like another vessel moored for the evening.

The more you look as though you’ve just stepped off a yacht, the better.

Hotel restaurant

At the heart of Hôtel Bleu sits L’Oursin, a destination restaurant that has quickly made waves along the Côte Bleue, thanks to the talents of young chef Ilane Tinchant. With panoramic views over the port and the Frioul archipelago, the mood is smart but maritime — all enamelled lava stone, marble floors and blue-and-white hues — while the cooking is unapologetically of the sea, built around local, sustainably caught fish, hand-harvested sea herbs and Provençal produce. Look out for the chef’s signature cuttlefish served in multiple textures — confit in its own ink, crisped in tempura and finished with a cloud of garlic. Other standouts include Mediterranean gambas with cardamom and a delicate shellfish foam, turbot with iodised chard and shellfish jus, and a closing note of dark chocolate with candied samphire.

Hotel bar

Hôtel Bleu’s bars are very much a tale of two tides. Le Nina, the indoor, sea-facing lounge named in tribute to Nina Simone — who spent her final years in Carry-le-Rouet — is a softly lit, jazz-inflected hideaway where cocktails are mixed to a smooth soundtrack and the harbour glints beyond the bar, open from October to April. When the Med heats up, Fernand moors alongside the pool, serving refreshing cocktails and shareable plates from noon into the evening (May to September), with a laidback, on-deck feel.

Last orders

L’Oursin is open for lunch , Wednesday to Saturday, between noon and 2pm, and for dinner, Tuesday to Saturday, from 7.30pm to 9pm (from 1 June, lunch is served on Fridays and Saturdays only); the restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Perched on the Côte Bleue just west of Marseille, Hôtel Bleu slips neatly into the old fishing-port charm of Carry-le-Rouet, sitting right on the petite marina and moments from the village buzz.

Planes

Marseille Provence Airport is the nearest place to touch down, a 25-minute drive from Hôtel Bleu. The hotel can organise private transfers for €70 one-way.

Trains

Rail travellers are well served by Marseille and Aix-en-Provence’s TGV stations, both linked to France’s high-speed network and under half an hour’s drive from the hotel, with transfers available on request.

Automobiles

Having a car will make exploring the Côte Bleue’s coves and villages far easier, though Carry-le-Rouet itself is pleasingly walkable. Hôtel Bleu has private parking available for €30 a night, with electric-vehicle charging offered for an additional €15.

Other

Carry-le-Rouet’s marina welcomes both private boats and visiting yachts, and it’s also served by seasonal coastal services linking nearby ports along the Côte Bleue and from Marseille. Hôtel Bleu is set directly on the harbour, so arrivals by sea can simply stroll to check-in.

Worth getting out of bed for

Days at Hôtel Bleu slip easily between land and sea: mornings might mean swimming at Plage du Rouet or the photogenic Plage Fernandel, snorkelling the protected waters of Cap Rousset, or heading out by boat to explore the calanques from the water. Along the Côte Bleue, coastal hiking and cycling trails thread through pine forests, golfers can tee off at the nearby Golf de la Côte Bleue, and the marina hums with markets and quaint cafés before Casino Barrière Carry-le-Rouet picks up the late-evening pace. For a change of scene, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and Cassis are within easy reach for museum-hopping, people-watching on sunlit squares and lingering seafood lunches by the water. 

Local restaurants

For relaxed waterfront fare just steps from your room, Les Terrasses serves Mediterranean-leaning dishes, wood-fired pizzas and local catches with a view over the port. If heading into Marseille for the evening, reserve a table at AM par Alexandre Mazzia. Flavours from the chef’s childhood in the Congo come to the fore, blended with Provençal ingredients. There’s also the Michel par AM street food truck parked outside the restaurant if you don’t manage to make a booking. 

Local cafés

Pâtisserie Reynier is known for its beautifully crafted chocolates — especially the playful chocolate sea urchins, a Carry-le-Rouet signature that makes an excellent edible souvenir. 

Local bars

Stop by Le Vin sur la Main for natural wine labels you probably haven’t heard of. This intimate Panier-district bar pours thoughtfully curated Provençal and organic bottles by the glass in a convivial, low-key setting.

Hôtel Bleu doesn’t just nod to its maritime setting — it’s fully shipshape, from hull to helm. Designed by Marseille-based Architecture 54, the interiors feel like an à-la-mode passage between land and sea, with layered blues and sail-canvas whites steering the course throughout. In the lounge-lobby, an Edra On the Rocks sofa sits beneath a sweeping, Cocteau-esque marine fresco by Franck Lebraly. The coastal theme continues to the bar, fronted by glossy blue tiles by Ceramicas Ferrés and lined with Midj Maya stools, before spilling onto the terrace, where Petite Friture chairs and Pedrali tables survey the harbour. 

Outside, the hotel channels a liner at rest on Carry-le-Rouet’s marina. Every room faces the water, balconies hovering above masts and mooring ropes, with Marseille’s blue silhouette on the horizon.
