Setting

Fisheries and fjords

From the water, Henningsvaer Bryggehotell blends into this Lofoten village’s colourful harbour. Inspired by the remote region’s rorbuer — traditional fishermen’s cabins — rooms and suites are restful sanctuaries set within wooden deckhouses painted in the Arctic archipelago’s classic palette of red, yellow and cream. The views over the Vestfjord will soon lure you aboard a boat or kayak, with a quayside seafood brasserie and goose-down duvets to reel you back in after the day’s adventures.

Our favourite rooms

Rugged mountains, the glistening Vestfjord, or historic harbour bustling with boating activity; choosing between the rooms at Henningsvaer Bryggehotell is more about the view than anything else. The Loft Suites are that bit more elevated, so the outlooks tend to be less interrupted. We’d also request a room with a deep soaking tub to thaw out after exploring the fjords, especially during the winter.

Packing tips

Windproof is just as (if not more) important as waterproof attire, as glacial gales can make the temperatures feel even chillier along this coastline. Bring swimmers for sea bathing in the summer (and cold plunges in the winter), and a tripod if you’re hoping to capture the Northern Lights on camera.

Also

There’s no spa at Henningsvaer Bryggehotell, but you can sauna with the locals at nearby Trevarefabrikken, an old cod liver oil factory overlooking the Vestfjord.

Pet‐friendly

Two rooms (bookable on request) are available for reservations with a well-behaved dog in tow. A flat fee of NOK400 includes a bed, two bowls and a welcome treat. See more pet-friendly hotels in Lofoten.

Sit in the window and you might just see the fishermen delivering the day’s catch along the pier.

Dress Code

The chunkiest crew neck in your wardrobe — even better if it’s knitted with Lofoten wool.

Lofoten’s farms and fisheries supply the seasonally-inspired kitchen at Vind Brasserie, so you could try locally foraged mushrooms and cloudberries alongside reindeer and Arctic fish depending on the time of year. Some signature dishes stay on the menu, such as refreshing seaweed salad, creamy fish soup, and Nordland cheeses drizzled with truffle honey.

Hotel bar

Pull up a stool in Vind Brasserie or sink into one of the low chairs in the lounge for an Aquavit-based cocktail or warming glass of gløgg.

Address
Henningsvaer Bryggehotell
Misværveien 22
Henningsvær
N-8312
Norway

On the southwestern tip of Austvågøya in the Lofoten Islands, Henningsvaer Bryggehotell sits on the quayside in its namesake fishing village.

Planes

Svolvaer is the closest domestic airport (40 minutes by car from the hotel), with regular shuttles to Bodø on small propeller planes. Most international visitors come through Oslo, then make the short hop to Svolvaer or Leknes via Bodø (each just over an hour’s drive from the hotel).

Automobiles

Coastal ferries and buses keep this remote archipelago relatively well connected, though renting a car will come in handy for accessing lesser-trodden hikes in the mountains. There’s free parking at the hotel, with charging stations for electric vehicles.

Other

Direct car ferries make daily crossings of the Vestfjord from Bodø to Moskenes during the summer, with a more restricted timetable during the low season. The crossing takes around three hours, and the port is two hours by road from the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Known as the ‘Venice of Lofoten’, the historic fishing village of Henningsvaer is cradled by the sea and steep mountain slopes on all sides, and makes an adventurous base for exploring the nearby islands of Heimøya and Hellandsøya at the tip of Austvågøya. Life still revolves around the water here, and Henningsvaer Bryggehotell can put you in touch with the skipper of MS Symra, a traditional fishing boat, for a day at sea and the chance to catch your own dinner. Spot sea eagles soaring overhead, or perched in rocky crags along the Trollfjord coastline, on a RIB safari through the straits of Øyhellsundet and Raftsundet. Guided hiking, climbing, skiing and kayaking excursions can take you even deeper into the fjordscape, with dedicated Northern Lights tours in the winter led by aurora photography experts to help you capture the dazzling light displays. It’s easy to spend most of your time outdoors, but the KaviarFactory’s contemporary art collections with works by Ai Weiwei, Marina Abramović, Bjarne Melgaard and other renowned names are enough temptation to hang up the hiking boots for an afternoon.

Local restaurants

Buzzy Hermetikken is a sociable brunch and dinner spot set within Trevarefabrikken, serving wood-fired pizzas in the warmer months from its outdoor brick oven facing the fjord.

Local cafés

Climbers, fishermen, skiers and artists have long gathered at Klatrekafeen — a red rorbu on the waterfront dishing out casual, comforting bites, from cinnamon buns and berry-topped waffles to Baltic herring burgers, around its log burner.

Local bars

Also at Trevarefabrikken, in the factory’s former cod liver oil crafting room, Trandamperiet is a candlelit wine bar which hosts vinyl nights, wine tastings, and cocktail workshops from its stripped-back yet stylish tables and benches.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this cluster of contemporary cabins in the fishing village of Henningsvaer and unpacked their hand-knitted woollen jumpers and Arctic seaweed salt, a full account of their fjord-focused break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Henningsvaer Bryggehotell in Lofoten…

Look at Henningsvaer Bryggehotell on a map and you might imagine only the most intrepid travellers reach this Nordland outpost. Strewn across several tiny islands off the southern coast of Austvågøya in the Lofoten archipelago, the fishing village of Henningsvaer was once only accessible by boat, with thousands of fishermen docking in its harbour during the Lofoten fishing season. Today, one-time cod liver oil factories, canneries, and fish processing plants have found new life as modern art galleries, independent shops, and seafood restaurants, and drying fish racks and centuries-old cabins still sweep you up in the seafaring heritage. The hotel floats atop an especially-added pontoon which extends from the main quayside, where you’ll wake up on the waterfront to lapping waves, salty breezes, and Arctic seabirds signalling a boat’s arrival. Let the heart-of-the-harbour setting wash over you while enjoying breakfast in bed, before donning your waterproofs for skipper-led expeditions above the Arctic Circle.
