Our favourite rooms

The individually styled rooms at Heidelberg Suites harmonise contemporary furnishings with pride in Heidelberg’s heritage. The Deluxe Garden Suites look out to verdant scenery that was said to have inspired works by Goethe and Schiller; the boldly hued Master Balcony Suites have equally impressive panoramas over the Neckar. Our favourite vista is admired from the Sky Signature Suite, which has a contemporary glass extension that opens onto a view-gazing rooftop terrace.

The small spa area is available for individual use; book in advance to have the sauna and steam room all to yourself. Massages with external therapists can be arranged on request, and the relaxation area means there’s no need to rush back to your room.

Address
Heidelberg Suites

Heidelberg
69120
Germany

You’ll find Heidelberg Suites on the banks of the Neckar river overlooking the red rooftops of Heidelberg, a university-proud city near Frankfurt in southwest Germany.

Planes

Frankfurt Airport is less than an hour’s drive; staff can arrange one-way transfers for €250 with advance notice.

Trains

Rail routes from Frankfurt and Stuttgart, plus connections from France, call at Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, which is a 10-minute cab ride from the hotel.

Automobiles

Heidelberg is best explored by foot or by bike. Should you hire a set of four wheels, there’s outdoor parking at the hotel for €25 a day; spots are limited so let staff know in advance if you’ll be needing one.

Worth getting out of bed for

Heidelberg Suites sits on the banks of the Neckar, on the city’s quieter northern side that’s backdropped by greenery and gardens. Stroll the Philosophers’ Way, which runs parallel to the water, or hike up to historical sites for loftier views over the water. Staff can arrange bike hire and pack you a picnic for post-cycle refuel; they can also shuttle you in the hotel’s golf cart to the Old Town, which charms with boutiques, cafés and the world-class Heidelberg University (dubbed ‘the Oxford of Germany’). Brush up on local history at its impressive library before showing off your new facts at the once-grand Heidelberg Castle, where you can tour the hillside sandstone ruins and huge wine barrels.

Local restaurants

Your camera will eat first at oh-so-cool Chambao: photogenic plates are bright with colour and rich with Mediterranean flavours; the stained glass windows also deserve a snapshot. Chandeliers and murals at refined 959 Heidelberg might turn some heads, but we imagine most of your time will be spent gazing down at the artfully arranged pan-Continental dishes. German favourites, such as crispy schnitzel and roast pork, are stand-outs at cosy but contemporary Wirtshaus zum Nepomuk.

Local cafés

You can get geeky about beans at Coffee Nerd: it’s an in-the-know spot for speciality brews, rotating coffee blends and buttery pastries. Bag a table in the garden-facing conservatory at Conditorei-Café Schafheutle, where you’ll find more cakes than you can count and a selection of hot drinks.

Local bars

At Schilling Roofbar, you can drink up zesty cocktails and fine champagne as well as sweeping city views. Rose pink-hued Jil Rooftop is another panoramic perch with signature tipples that make for some very good sundowners.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this riverfront hotel in Heidelberg and unpacked their books and boutique buys, a full account of their small city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Heidelberg Suites in southwest Germany…

Revered writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once mused, ‘I left my heart in Heidelberg’ — a postcard-perfect city in Germany’s southwest, with its red sandstone castle, terracotta-toned rooftops and gingerbread house-like architecture. If only Goethe’s timeline had aligned with boutique hotel Heidelberg Suites, whose architect owners also designed Smith stablemates Casa Cipriani and Hotel Lungarno in Italy.

The style here is suitably romantic: stone busts and gilded artwork adorn colourful walls; an intimate spa area soothes with ayurvedic massages, and most bedrooms have delightful views over the river and charming old town — the Sky Signature Suite also has a rooftop terrace.

Though you could tick off Heidelberg’s big hitters from this waterfront basecamp, we’d suggest searching for creative inspiration down the city’s cobbled streets, in its leading university library or in the castle’s manicured grounds (there’s a decorated bench where Goethe once sat, seeking the same).

And just like Goethe, you’ll soon find that this idyllic city — and of course your refined lodgings — have captured your heart.
