Gran Hotel Claridge Granada’s name gives away a lot: this luxe boutique hotel flexes opulent interiors and a prime centro locale that brings the cathedral up close. You’ll spot its storied form from some suites and the rooftop terrace, where additional views of La Alhambra make for quite the pairing. You might be able to see many of Andalucia’s notable spots without leaving, but if you can pry yourself from the tiled spa and refined restaurants, you’ll find that this city lives up to its reputation just the same.

Our favourite rooms

Gran Hotel Claridge Granada brushes shoulders with many of the city’s big hitters, and you can get up close and personal with its Renaissance neighbour in a Premium Cathedral Views room. Lofty ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows are a staple in every category; but for extra flair, opt for the Grand Claridge Cathedral Suite, a sprawling space with a library, record player, ornate tilework and duo of bedrooms.

Poolside

Alfresco dips in the heated, rooftop pool are made all the more scenic by crowning views of Granada Cathedral. Its striped, monochrome tiling puts a modern spin on the city’s Moorish heritage, and drying off under a fringed parasol and plump sunloungers has never looked so glam.

Spa

The Wellness Boutique Spa is an intimate space for self-care. Let yourself be hypnotised by the black-and-white stripes adorning the indoor pool — the hydrotherapy circuit is extra entrancing — or be buffed and pampered by bespoke treatments, restorative massages and rejuvenating facials.

Packing tips

There’s no need to pack your camera’s zoom lens: the cathedral is almost within touching distance, and you’ll also easily spy La Alhambra from the solarium terrace.

Hotel restaurant

At roof-set Zima Luz & Top, dining comes with a generous side of cathedral, La Alhambra and Sierra Nevada views — distracting, huh. But the polished Mediterranean menus, which weave in Andalucian flavours, are just as worthy of your attention. Contemporary, regional cooking comes courtesy of chef Rafael Arroyo at Inizio, with an equally scene-stealing setting alongside the hotel’s preserved archaeological remains. 

Hotel bar

The Gran Lobby bar is a cosy, convivial space to settle in after a day roaming Granada’s cobblestone streets. Hole up by the fireplace, nab a novel off the bookshelf and sip a garden-inspired cocktail alongside a selection of snacks — there are worse ways to recharge. 

Last orders

Zima serves breakfast from 7am to 11am, lunch between 1pm and 6pm, and dinner from 8pm to 11pm. At Inizio, lunch is served from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, with dinner between 8.30pm and 11.30pm.

Planes

Federico García Lorca Granada Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel, and staff can arrange private transfers on request for an additional charge.

Trains

Staff can arrange transfers for the 15-minute drive to Granada’s central railway station, where high-speed connections run to Madrid, Málaga and Seville.

Automobiles

If you need a set of wheels, staff can arrange transfers and taxis instead. Should you choose to drive, there’s valet parking at the hotel for €30 a night.

Worth getting out of bed for

City breaks are typically associated with high step counts, but at Gran Hotel Claridge Granada, you can tick off a few sights without leaving the hotel (or in some cases, bed). The gleaming-in-gold Granada Cathedral is a stone’s throw away and the screensaver to the rooftop terrace and several suites; from the solarium terrace, you can also admire aah-worthy La Alhambra — both are deserving of closer looks, too. A clutch of rooms face San Agustín Market, a buzzy spot for tapas to go and quick lunches. And if you feel like venturing further afield, staff can arrange cycling tours, guided hikes and ski excursions in the Sierra Nevada, depending on the season. Day trips to Andalucia’s other storied cities, Seville and Córdoba, are appealing at any point in the year.

Faralá Restaurante’s melodic name might make you feel like breaking into song, and its Andalucian fine-dining dishes are deserving of praise-singing, thanks to Arabic influences and bold-with-colour bites. Cosy and intimate Manigua Bar pairs Spanish recipes and seasonal plates with sweet wines (and even sweeter desserts). Tuck into traditional Moroccan fare at fuss-free Restaurante Palacio Andaluz Almona, where tagine, coal-cooked lamb and oil-doused houmous are stand-outs. 

Local cafés

Grab a flaky pastry and brews that pack a punch from La Finca Coffee to fuel your morning in Granada, or linger over a healthy, wholesome brunch at Fika.

Local bars

Named after the film genre, Noir is an old-world-inspired bar, where you can sip organic wines and cinema-nodding cocktails as monochrome movie clips roll in the background. Tapas, vermút and cañas are your Spanish aperitivo staples at laidback Tocateja, a mod-rustic watering hole with stained glass and bottle-lined interiors.
