Setting

Doe-eyed Deer Valley

Spruced with Austrian interiors and a distinctly Alpine spirit, Goldener Hirsch feels fresh out of a Tyrolean folktale. But step outside and the illusion gives way to Utah’s undulating Wasatch Mountains and powder-blessed skiing. Winter Olympics fame and lift proximity draw snow-seekers; and come summer, hill trails and riverside sojourns captivate in equal measure. Return to your refined chalet — with its cozy cuisine and healing spa — and you’ll realize that some fables are best lived, rather than imagined.

Need to know

Rooms

61, including 16 suites.

Check–Out

Noon, and check-in is at 4pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

More details

Rates don’t usually include breakfast, but options are available at both restaurants for an additional charge. Transfers within four miles of the hotel are included.

Also

Two rooms (one Two-Bedroom Residence and one Inn King) have been adapted with lowered beds, widened doorframes and modified bathrooms for wheelchair users. All the communal areas and restaurants are accessible, and there are dedicated parking spots for placard holders. Unfortunately, the swimming pool only has stepped access.

Hotel closed

Goldener Hirsch closes for a seasonal break during May and again in November.

At the hotel

Easy ski lift access, ski concierge and equipment locker, weekly activity schedules, charged laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, minibar, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, free glass-bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and bespoke bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Options are set across a duo of buildings — the main, newly renovated Goldener building or the more traditional but equally charming Inn. Our hearts are with those in the latter (particularly the Inn One Bedroom Suite) for their beamed ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces and quaint Austrian decor.

Poolside

Couple your laps and steamy soaks with wholesome mountain views up at the rooftop pool and infinity-edge hot tub — open from 8am to 10pm.

Spa

There’s something in the air at Goldener Hirsch’s all-out spa, where 'high-altitude healing’ has been deemed the mantra and holistic treatments, the prescription. Massages, facials and full-body scrubs use oils from the mountains natural bounty to soothe, and there’s a sauna for a more restorative form of après ski. You'll find a selection of wellness-focused activities on the weekly schedules, too, with sound baths, reiki, yoga and meditation frequent features.

Packing tips

Park City basks in over 250 days of sunshine each year, so suncream is even more essential in this ray-soaked valley.

Also

There’s a small fitness area, kitted out with all the essentials, should you require some quick conditioning before taking to the slopes.

Pet‐friendly

Up to two dogs are welcome to join you for a one-off fee of $250 each. Pups will be provided with beds, water bowls and treats on arrival, and the concierge team are well-versed in local Fido-friendly activities. See more pet-friendly hotels in Park City.

Children

Little Smiths are very welcome at Goldener Hirsch.

Best for

All are welcome, but little Smiths old enough to strap their own skis and join in on the action will be happiest here.

Recommended rooms

Any of the Two- or Three-Bedroom Residences will fit families finely with ample living spaces and a selection of bedroom set-ups.

Activities

The hotel itself doesn’t have a kids’ club, but they’ve strong connections with a multitude of certified ski schools that teach over-threes how to navigate the slopes. Staff can arrange pony visits and rides at a local indoor arena; and for full-family fun, there’s dogsledding, tubing, sleigh rides and ice skating.

Swimming pool

Children are welcome in the main swimming pool, but it’s worth noting there isn’t a lifeguard, so you’ll have to be with them at all times.

Meals

Children's menus are available at all the hotel's restaurants.

Babysitting

As long as you let them know in advance, staff can call on their roster of registered babysitters to come in and take tots off your hands.

No need to pack

Unless you’ve a Mikaela Shiffrin in the making, kids don’t need their own skis — all the gear is available to hire from the hotel, or one of Silver Lake’s many rental stores.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Beside the ski lifts at The Après Chalet ensures a speedy return to the runs; or pair meals with a beguiling backdrop by The Hirsch’s fairy-filled murals. From 1 December, three domed ‘Alpenglobes’ are set up in the gardens for secluded suppers.

Dress Code

Red-nipped noses straight from the slopes are just fine during the day, but come evening, The Hirsch calls for a touch more elegance.

Hotel restaurant

You’ve a trio to choose from: The Hirsch is this spot’s flagship, adorned with fittingly folksy features (woodland murals, intricate wall carvings) and an equally appealing menu. Breakfast, lunch and dinner come courtesy of head chef Jeff O’Neill, who uses proudly local produce to craft a seasonal selection of copper-pot classics, including foie gras and slow-melted fondues.

If you’re yearning to be back on the slopes, bites at The Kitz are smaller and somewhat simpler (grilled sandwiches, salads and hand-rolled pretzels), but one thing they won’t forgo is flavor. Alternatively, The Après Chalet serves an afternoon selection of cozy mountainside cuisine against sweeping views and finger-warming fire pits.

Hotel bar

Wander through The Kitz, and you’ll find its attached Antler Lounge — a cockle-warming spot that sets the tone for cosseting alpine comfort. Full evening menus can be delivered to tables here, should you prefer a more mellow setting, with a selection of signature cocktails and crackling fireside seats as your idyllic accompaniments.

Last orders

The Hirsch serves breakfast 7am–10.30am; lunch from 11am–2pm, and dinner between 5pm and 9pm. Breakfast at The Kitz is 6.30am–11am and lunch is 11am–4pm; The Après Chalet is open 2.30pm–4.30pm. Antler Lounge pours and plates from 4pm–9pm.

Room service

Available between 7am and 10pm.

Address
Goldener Hirsch
7520 Royal Street
Park City
84060
United States

Embraced by Utah’s Bald Mountain, Goldener Hirsch sits steps from the slopes in Silver Lake Village — a small resort town in Deer Valley, just outside Park City.

Planes

International and domestic flights are most likely to touch down in Salt Lake City’s airport, which is a 45-minute drive away. Staff can arrange private transfers for an additional fee.

Automobiles

Transfers can be arranged easily, and anywhere within four miles will be free, but bringing your own set of wheels gives added freedom. There’s a carpark (with electric-vehicle chargers) on-site for $40 a night, and the hotel offers valet parking.

Worth getting out of bed for

Given your lofty locale between Deer Valley’s six summits, outdoor pursuits top to-do lists year-round. Naturally, winter is a particularly impressive spectacle, with Olympic-anointed ski runs and an average 300 inches of snow each year. These colder months also bring snowshoeing, sleigh rides, dogsledding, cross-country skiing and ice fishing to adventure-packed agendas. As snow turns to spring, days feature horseback riding and hiking around the Wasatch Mountains; tubing, wakeboarding and boating along Deer Creek Reservoir, and rafting down the Weber River

For cross-seasonal sights, Park City (and its arterial Main Street) has a host of local museums, independent eateries and boutiques to browse, as well as an engaging calendar of cultural events. Back at base, you’ll find a weekly concierge-crafted schedule that includes everything from pretzel making and chocolate tastings, to yoga and meditation classes.

Local restaurants

If you ask us, a stint on the slopes calls for some serious carb-filled recovery — and for a fine place to pack them in, head to quaint Italian restaurant, Café Terigo. Meat [sic] your match at Riverhorse on Main with fine-dining menus that feature prime cuts and sapid sides. And for what some may deem the best burger in town, No Name Saloon steals the show for its crackling fireplaces, whimsical decor and melt-in-the-mouth patties.

Local cafés

Small-scale roasters supply the energy-boosting goods at Pink Elephant, where each cup of coffee purchased contributes to funding wildlife conversation. Windy Ridge Café serves its community a little differently, with crust-busting sandwiches, seasonal salads and fried sides as their do-good drive.

Local bars

Swinging doors and spittoons once defined this region's saloons; and though hat-tipping cowboys aren’t commonplace these days, you’ll find their wild past repackaged with esteemed skill — and an enviable array of house-made whiskeys — at High West. If you’d rather a sauvignon over a spirit, Old Town Cellars is a Main Street favorite for sommelier-selected bottles and local brews.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this high-altitude hotel in Deer Valley and unpacked their lederhosen and national park apparel, a full account of their mountainside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Goldener Hirsch in Park City…

It takes a lot for us to fall fast here at Mr & Mrs Smith, but when our resident thrill-seekers heard word that the Auberge group had taken over an all-frills chalet in Utah’s idyllic Wasatch Mountains, our love was locked in. Its past as a private lodge for silversmiths turned out to be no more than a happy coincidence.

Goldener Hirsch first opened its historic doors in 1992, after renowned philanthropists — the Eccles — were inspired to recreate their favorite Saltzburg hotel in the home state. After almost 20 years of stellar operation, the Smith-approved hoteliers at Auberge schussed in to elevate its offerings. Cosseting alpine interiors, comforting Austrian fare and a restorative spa remain its founding features. Your mountain access, however, has been amped up with dedicated ski concierges, personalized itineraries, après lounges and a rooftop infinity pool. Families are well catered for, too; and as snow-fiends filter out, summer vacationers have Deer Valley’s verdant peaks as their adventure-packed playground.
