Also

As you can imagine, the retreat’s remoteness presents a challenge for those with limited mobility, but it isn’t entirely prohibitive. The cliff suites nearest the main lodge are reserved for you if you have accessibility concerns.

At the hotel

Laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In suites: air-conditioning, mosquito nets, binoculars, yoga mat, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, minibar, mini fridge, free bottled water, bathrobes, organic soap and bath salts.

Our favourite rooms

All six cliff-hanging suites are entirely private, with outdoor showers and riveting views of the valley floor and the mountains beyond. Each suite has a butler’s hatch, a small window accessed from both sides, so you won’t need to get dressed to receive the coffee or champagne you’ve ordered from reception.

Poolside

There’s a showstopping infinity pool reachable via some short steps from the main area. Plus, each suite has its own one-person plunge pool built into the veranda.

Spa

You can get private outdoor massages as well as in-room treatments on your veranda. Staff use local products from African Baobab and Healing Earth. Signature treatments include a detoxifying baobab body wrap and an outdoor bath experience.

Packing tips

Your phone camera probably won’t cut it here. Bring your SLR or film camera to do justice to your Limpopo memories.

Sustainability efforts

Few & Far Luvhondo is a conservation-first retreat with a B Corp certification. As part of a carbon-sequestering project, the hotel goes beyond offsetting by actively removing carbon from the atmosphere and working towards absorbing more than it uses. You can get closer to that mission, too, by joining conservation manager Dawn for hands-on experiences such as clearing alien vegetation, supporting erosion control and learning how it takes more than tourism alone to protect this extraordinary wilderness.

Food and Drink

Top Table

The lodge’s dining room delivers, but the real top table is out in the bush: a star-lit seat beneath the African sky.

Dress Code

You won’t need dress shirts or heels for this trip, even if the quality of the cooking deserves them.

Hotel restaurant

Dining at Few & Far Luvhondo is less a daily ritual than a series of delicious discoveries. In the lodge restaurant, South African flavours are given a refined, seasonal spin, with elegant tasting menus showcasing the best of the region, much of it grown in the retreat’s own garden or sourced from nearby farmers and producers. Elsewhere, evenings might unfold around a crackling Boma Braai, where smoky, fire-cooked dishes and local traditions take centre stage, or with an evening that blends food, music and storytelling into a celebration of the culture that surrounds the lodge.

The most memorable meals, though, are those served beneath Luvhondo’s endless skies. A bush dinner turns supper into a true wilderness experience: lantern-lit tables, the scent of the chef’s creations, and the soundtrack of the Soutpansberg unfolding around you. Pair it with a spot of stargazing, from your private deck or a cosy camp set-up in the bush, and you’ve got a seriously memorable mealtime.

Hotel bar

The bar is great for a pre- or post-dinner tipple, though the sundowner experience doesn’t stop there. You can also sip your way through the wilderness from a choice of spectacular viewpoints. As for the wine list, small South African vineyards are championed, with a focus on organic and low-intervention producers creating intriguing bottles you may not have encountered before (some not even labelled), alongside a thoughtful selection of local favourites.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 6am to 10:30am, lunch is noon til 3pm, and dinner is served 6:30pm until 9:30pm.

Room service

Available from 6am until 9pm, and you can have items delivered via your butler’s hatch.

Worth getting out of bed for

The plan for each day is entirely up to you at Few & Far Luvhondo. Your guide will be on hand with ideas, but whether you wake at 6am or 11am, have breakfast in your room or on a game drive, or spend the day at the spa or on a leopard-spotting hike, is your decision.

But you’d be wild yourself not to wake early and get out there into the Soutpansberg Mountains, a pristine wilderness area the same size as Singapore. With a higher density of wildlife than the Amazon, the 35,000 hectares the hotel has succeeded in putting into conservation is also one of South Africa’s capitals of endemism, meaning reams of plant and animal life exclusive to this one region.

As its name suggests, wild and remote stays form the foundation at Few & Far Luvhondo — a green-minded retreat in the Soutpansberg Mountains. Choose to sleep in a signature cliff-hanging suite and you’ll be ensconced with your own plunge pool and clutch of modern comforts; or allow yourself a closer connection with nature and follow your guide to the hotel’s far-flung sleep-out (available March to October), where king-size beds and small verandas sit above a rocky amphitheatre. Here, you can let your guide do the cooking, or get involved yourself, and settle in for the night under a canopy of stars.

Ancient cave art, tracking hikes, and the chance to see roaming wildlife are just some of the above-and-beyond activities included in your stay. Hosts are skilled at tailoring trips to you, learning your likes and dislikes, your hobbies and interests — it’s a commitment to experience that’s reflected in every detail of this sustainable stay.
