Essence Peregian Beach

Desperate to squeeze the very last drop out of Queensland's summer, our family of four booked a last-minute getaway to Essence Peregian Beach — fittingly, on the official final weekend of the season.

We rolled in late on Friday night, after football training and a quick dinner en route. Check-in was smooth and efficient (which is always appreciated when kids are over-tired). We’d booked the largest of 10 two-bedroom apartments, and it was impressively spacious — over 100 square metres, with bedrooms at opposite ends, each with its own bathroom. Parent win.

The suite featured a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, lounge and a balcony overlooking the pool, complete with a simple outdoor space. The modern, minimalist decor felt calm and coastal; beds were extremely comfortable, lighting was adaptable, and the kids’ room was set up exactly as requested with twin beds. A tucked-away laundry was a thoughtful bonus for longer stays. The fridge was stocked with drinks and sweet treats, including a pre-ordered plate of chocolate-dipped strawberries, which our nine-year-old enthusiastically claimed.

Cue the first hiccup. A miscommunication between Mr Smith and I meant that we’d arrived without The Bag — the one containing all our clothes and toiletries (the kids, having packed their own bags, were entirely unfazed). Thankfully, the Village at Peregian Beach is dangerously well equipped, so any thoughts of driving home to collect the absent luggage were short-lived. By Saturday morning, we’d unanimously agreed that a shopping spree was the only solution. Shopping on holidays can often result in interesting fashion choices — I once bought a full-length, camouflage, puffer boilersuit from a vintage store while holidaying in St Leonards (a perfect festival outfit, no?). But Peregian’s Kudo Sport & Leisure offers a great edit of men’s and women’s apparel that isn't screaming ‘coastal holiday’. 

Back at Essence, we discover a well-equipped gym and two swimming pools, one with a bar serving cocktails (including frozen margaritas) and casual lunch options. Saturday was hot and humid — ideal pool weather. Staff were friendly and welcoming, though a little stretched at peak times. Our hot chips took over an hour to arrive, but the apologetic bar staff softened the blow with complimentary lemonades for the kids.

Essence doesn’t have a traditional restaurant onsite — instead, its in-room and poolside dining is operated by Outer Square, the café-restaurant next door. It was buzzing all day, with excellent coffee, a broad menu, kid-friendly options and a dog-friendly, local vibe. There’s also a very well-stocked independent supermarket beside the hotel for those wanting to self-cater, plus a great mix of boutiques, a bakery, pub and pharmacy all within easy walking distance.

Peregian Beach itself is just a short stroll across the road, via a leafy park. Conditions were a little choppy in the morning, so we delayed our beach time until later in the day. We were met by soft, fine, white sand — the kind you’re a little spoiled by when living in Australia. By the time we arrived, the lifeguards had officially packed up and the beach was closed. Still, it was far too beautiful an afternoon to rush away. The kids kicked a ball and splashed in the shallows, while we soaked up that golden-hour glow before the sun dipped beyond the horizon.

Peregian Beach sits in a leisurely pocket on the northerly part of the Sunshine Coast. It has a relaxed, refreshingly un-touristy feel — and we didn’t need to get in the car once, from arrival to departure. For longer stays and adventurous travellers, you’re a short drive from several world-renowned spots, including Noosa’s Hastings Street and national park, the serene Lake Weyba and Kondalilla Falls, all within 45 minutes of the hotel.

For those leaning fully into holiday mode, Essence Peregian Beach offers an in-suite wellness menu. There’s also a plethora of restaurants within walking distance, including Italian, Thai, Mexican, French-Mediterranean, seafood, modern Australian and Middle Eastern options. We found a great little sushi spot, which kept the young humans very happy.

Stylish, spacious and easy-going, Essence delivers a relaxed coastal stay that feels both thoughtful and effortless — even when you forget half your luggage. With several well-appointed holiday homes (ranging from three to five bedrooms), complimented by a boutique collection of studios and two-bedroom suites, there’s room and rhythm for every kind of stay. Junior and Senior Smiths agreed — we’d return in a heartbeat.
