Sitting pretty in Plaka — Athens’ storied ‘neighbourhood of the gods’ — Ergon House Ermou is a fittingly divine addition to the Ergon Houses pantheon. Doubling down on the brand’s food-forward philosophy, the ground-floor taverna dishes up nostalgic, yia-yia-style Greek classics reimagined for modern appetites. Hotel restaurant

Food is at the heart of each Ergon hotel, and it’s no different here. Across the light-filled ground floor, Taverna Ermou serves soul food-for-sharing in a space inspired by Athenian eateries of old. Expect elevated Greek classics like shrimp saganaki, stuffed vine leaves and feta-sprinkled salads. On the rooftop, you can order street food and smash burgers from the hotel’s buzzy neighbours, Balboa.

Hotel bar

The Veranda bar’s liquid assets come with Acropolis views, plush, terracotta-trimmed seating and butter-hued, scalloped parasols to keep Helios’ rays at bay. Expect handpicked Greek spirits, local wines and a pick-n-mix of picture-pretty cocktails. 

Last orders

Taverna Ermou is open for breakfast between 7am and 10.30am, then from 12pm to 12am for lunch and dinner. The Veranda Bar pours from 5pm to 1am daily.

Ergon House Ermou is in Athens’ central Plaka district, an Acropolis-shaded enclave surrounded by trendy bars, restaurants and indie boutiques.

Planes

Athens airport is 40 minutes away by car, depending on traffic. The hotel can organise transfers on request for around €50 (one-way).

Trains

Monastiraki metro station is a one-minute walk away, with direct connections (on the blue and green lines) to and from the airport as well as Piraeus port.

Automobiles

There’s no parking on site, but the hotel can arrange private parking nearby with advance notice. Better still, ditch the car altogether — much like those oft-sung-about boots, Athens’ ancient streets were made for walking.

Worth getting out of bed for

Just steps from lively Psyrri, picturesque Thiseio, and bustling Monastiraki, you’re perfectly placed to explore some of Athens’ most iconic neighbourhoods. But when you’re this close to the Acropolis, it’s only right to get your fill of antiquity first. Go early to beat the crowds — and the afternoon heat — then make a beeline for the Acropolis Museum next door, an architectural marvel housing thousands of artefacts from the Sacred Rock and its surrounding slopes. Fuel up at Varvakios Agora, Monastiraki’s indoor-outdoor food market, or take a stroll through Platia Iroon with its low-slung, modernist buildings. Ergon House Ermou’s Plaka locale is home to some of the city’s lesser-known museums like the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments and the Paul and Alexandra Canellopoulos Museum, a neoclassical mansion filled with intimate private collections of ancient and Byzantine art. On Sundays, the flea market in Avissinia Square makes a fine spot for treasure hunting. By night, head to Cine Paris, an outdoor cinema perched on an Acropolis-gazing rooftop.  

Local restaurants

There are few places as vibrant as Taverna Saita, an Athenian institution that brings the party — and the flavour — to a low-lit Plaka basement. Opt for bakaliaros (crispy fried salt cod) or the house-made skordalia (garlic potato dip). By contrast, Cherchez la Femme has bright and airy interiors, a terrace primed for people watching and a menu of Greek classics (stuffed vine leaves, chicken souvlaki, moussaka, grilled octopus). 

Local cafés

In the neighbouring Psyrri area, Minu is a one-stop shop for all things cool and caffeinated. At this cafe-slash-concept-store, everything is for sale, from the art on the walls to the lamps on the tables and even some of the furniture.   

Local bars

Follow the locals to Brettos, a historic backstreet watering hole that claims the title of Athens’ oldest distillery. The spirits are pleasingly arranged by colour and interiors feel delightfully out of time. For something more contemporary, Wine is Fine is one of the city’s coolest sipping spots, serving natural wines and small plates from its Seventies-style, industrial-chic bar that spills onto the street.

If the question is Athens, our answer is always ‘yes’, especially with stays like Ergon House Ermou in the mix, a modern-day classic in the ancient cradle’s ‘neighbourhood of the gods’. As the fourth hotel from the food-focused Ergon Houses, Ermou stays true to tradition with a light-filled Greek taverna gracing the ground floor, as well as a show-stopping rooftop bar with views-a-plenty and cocktails you’ll dream about for weeks to come. Tucked away just off Plaka’s busy main drag, the hotel carries traces of its residential past life with blush-hued frescoes and high ceilings typical of old Athenian homes.  

Now, thanks to a makeover courtesy of Greek design studio Urban Soul Project and the Ergon Atelier, there’s a present-day polish to the building’s heritage charm.
