Setting

Lavender-scented hillside

Is it possible to ever tire of looking out over the cerulean sea-meets-sky vistas at the Eliamos Villas Hotel & Spa? We doubt it. But it’s not just the spectacular views that are easy on the eye here – there’s a collection of beautifully styled villas too, that open to their own sun-drenched terrace, each with a shimmering pool. Both the hotel’s spa and restaurant draw inspiration and ingredients from the island, and whether it's during a morning massage or evening meal, you’ll always find your gaze drawn back to the dreamy panoramas of this elevated hillside hotel.

Need to know

Rooms

All of the 12 accommodations are suites or villas.

Check–Out

11am, but flexible, subject to availability. Earliest check-in, 3pm.

More details

Rates include breakfast. For July and August there is a five-night minimum stay.

Also

One of the hotel’s suites has been adapted for the use of those with mobility issues.

At the hotel

Outdoor gym, free loaner bikes, spa, 24-hour reception. In rooms: Jacuzzi or private pool, smart TV, coffee machine, tea-making kit, free bottled water, bathrobes and slippers, pillow menu, pool towels, turndown service, and air-conditioning.

Our favourite rooms

The Eliamos Three Bedroom Villa is a charming crashpad (the largest of all accommodation options here, and a rare seven-sleeper in Kefalonia) with its own frgrant garden and private saltwater pool set on-high for maximum sea views. And we were also particularly drawn to the Elia One Bedroom Two Storey Villa, with an elevated duplex design that provides particularly dramatic views from the upstairs without the trouble of leaving your bed.

Poolside

The hotel’s main saltwater infinity pool is lined with plump cushioned sunloungers where you can swoon over the Ionian Sea in extra comfort.

Spa

Pummelling and pampering take place in two spa treatment rooms where you can choose from a menu of massages using regional and organic products. There’s also an outdoor spa pool to unwind even further in afterwards.

Packing tips

Bring a copy of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The film of the book was shot entirely on the island so you’ll be immersed from the start.

Also

If you fancy getting your sizzle on, you can arrange a barbecue to be set up on your terrace.

Children

Two- and three-bedroom villas allow for families with kids, and cots are available free of charge. However, the scene is more geared towards couples and there’s nothing aimed at little Smiths.

Sustainability efforts

The hotel goes above and beyond. Key cards, gym equipment and even bicycles are made from wood. Refillable water bottles are given on arrival, all plastic, glass bottles and cooking oil are recycled, and much of their energy is solar. They even support a turtle-conservation programme on the island.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Any table on the outside terrace at dusk gives you front-row seats to sigh-worthy Ionian sunsets while you dine.

Dress Code

Earthy chic and a touch of sparkle to match the scene.

Hotel restaurant

The hotel’s Eliamos Restaurant opens first for breakfast, serving a healthy-and-hearty selection, including plentiful vegetarian and vegan options, to kick-start your day. You’ll have Mediterranean flavours with a modern twist for lunch and dinner, prepared with ingredients sourced from local farmers and small producers. Most dishes are unpretentious Kefalonian fare centred around island-grown vegetables, fish netted daily from the Ionian Sea, and herbs freshly plucked from the hotel’s own garden.

Hotel bar

There’s a small indoor café-bar next to the restaurant, perfect for a mid-morning coffee, and come evening most guests like to gather around the poolside bar for pre-dinner cocktails while the sun sinks dramatically into the sea.

Last orders

You can order drinks and snacks until midnight.

Room service

From breakfast-in-bed to late-night nibbles, there’s a 24-hour separate room-service menu available around the clock (for an extra €10 charge).

Address
Eliamos Villas Hotel & Spa
Livathou
Kefalonia
28100
Greece

Eliamos Villas Hotel & Spa is located on the southern corner of the Ionian Island of Kefalonia off the west coast of Greece.

Planes

You can fly direct to Kefalonia Airport from several hubs around the UK, including Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester. Alternatively, flights regularly connect from Athens. It’s then around a half-hour drive to the hotel.

Automobiles

Kefalonia’s the largest of the Ionian islands, so hiring a car is the best way to explore. A word of advice: some of the hairpin turns on mountain roads can be a little hairy for the less-experienced driver. The hotel provides free private parking.

Other

Getting to the island by boat from the mainland is easy and relatively quick, not to mention rather scenic. Ferries regularly depart from the ports of Patras or Kyllini in western Greece and take between one-and-a-half to three hours.

Worth getting out of bed for

As tempting as it is to hole up in your villa and gaze over the sea, there’s plenty to tease you out of your hideaway. Regular yoga and pilates sessions draw the more fitness-inclined out for a morning flex, as does the sea-facing outdoor gym which includes state-of-the-art part-wood Nohrd bikes and rowers. When you’re ready to venture beyond the hotel’s scenic grounds, a short amble downhill leads you to a secluded pebble cove with gin-clear water. In fact you can find several small quiet beaches such as Avithos or Trapezaki within strolling distance of the hotel – the hotel’s loaner bikes are also a good way to get there. For somewhere a little livelier, the scenic Makris Gialos beach, close to the capital Argostoli, is a 15-minute drive and you can visit some of the island’s other quaint towns en route. In the cooler spring and autumn months, you might be tempted to explore the hiking trails in and around Ainos National Park, including Kefalonia’s highest peak with 360-degree panoramas around the whole island.

Local restaurants

One of the best waterside dining experiences you’ll find close by is at the Waterway Restaurant, its amphitheatre-style layout overlooking Klimatsias Beach. The fish-focused menu offers a broad selection of market-fresh seafood, from local prawns to swordfish scampi, together with plentiful mezze options and grilled cheeses. Decked out like a traditional taverna, family-run To Enetiko is another top seaside option with budget-friendly prices and authentic Greek homestyle cooking.

Local bars

Visitors out to party should certainly look elsewhere, though one of the liveliest beach bars in the area is Waikiki on Lourdata Beach. Summer nights see DJs spin dancefloor fillers to draw the holidaymaker crowds. A bit closer and a bit mellower is the Cayos Beach Bar on Trapezaki Beach, where they play chilled-out Cuban tunes and serve pina coladas in real pineapples.

Looking out onto the blue Ionian Sea from the edge of our private plunge pool, Mr Smith and I unfurled a piece of paper that the day before a sonographer had scribbled the word ‘boy’ onto. Eliamos, perched on the clifftops of southern Kefalonia, is the perfect backdrop for a milestone moment like this one, and given how delicious (and nausea-proof) the cucumber and local honey welcome beverage was, I can’t think of anywhere better to have had our babymoon.

I am a city girl who always fantasises about staying in the middle of nowhere — we went to Patagonia on our honeymoon. However, as much as I like the idea of a cabin surrounded by wilderness, I haven’t driven in a decade and am so used to convenience, I’ve been known to Deliveroo myself a ham sandwich. At Eliamos, you almost forget you’re on a well-trodden island with several UK flights arriving each day — I’m not sure I've ever stayed somewhere as secluded and quiet. Despite the seemingly remote location, it’s only a 15-minute taxi ride from the airport and a three-and-a-half-hour flight from London, making it a viable option for a long weekend.

The resort is made up of 12 villas that are artfully dotted over the cliffs like a sprawling village, so you can easily forget you have neighbours. Guests tend to retreat to their private pools, so over the course of our three-day stay, we didn’t see anyone else (apart from the resident cat) at the main pool, which is nestled among beds of swaying lavender. The beds of herbs and wildflowers create the most magical scent, which wafts through the property. I wish I could bottle it.

The private beach is delightfully unmanicured (you have to clamber down steps that are coated in cascading stones), making it feel like you’ve discovered your own secret cove. Aside from the odd passing sailing boat, the rugged beach was empty every day — it doesn’t get more luxurious than having a bay to yourself on a Greek island in peak season. The water is shallow, meaning you can easily paddle out to the rocks, armed with a towel and a book, and position yourself on a shelf in the middle of the magical Tiffany-blue water. The lack of sunbeds made it feel even more special and unspoilt.

I might have felt intrepid after traversing my way down to this private beach and to my rocky outpost, but Eliamos blends seclusion with the convenience of a luxury hotel stay. You can get a golf buggy to pick you up at the top of the beach steps to save you the climb back to the hotel. And unlike renting a private villa, you can have feta-drenched chips and the aforementioned cucumber cocktail sent to any corner of the resort.

We had grand intentions of taking the complimentary e-bikes for a spin of the island, but in the end we didn’t venture beyond the car park once. And why would we? The Eliamos team will arrange all manner of excursions, from stargazing to boat tours around the island, but I found it hard to believe that I could possibly find a better view than the one outside my bedroom. For those wanting to do a little more than lounge each day, you can join the free Pilates classes at the open-air gym each morning (it even has reformer equipment), have a spa treatment or join a cooking class.

The hotel embraces the heritage of the island, but with a modern spin — and nowhere is this seen more than on the menu at the hotel restaurant Olais. It is more elevated than your average taverna offering, but sticks to local ingredients and traditional dishes, such as meat pie and orange cake, but with a more refined spin. It is all about simple cooking and quality ingredients, and I found that it’s one of those restaurants where you tend to order the same thing again and again — I had the sea-bass every night because I couldn’t believe it could be topped. The food is exceptional, but the setting has a relaxed and almost barefoot feeling, with an open terrace with a sun-drenched, bohemian aesthetic, perched above olive groves and beds of wildflowers. We ended up staying for hours after each sitting, talking to other guests, and trying to squeeze in another portion of orange cake.

Every detail at Eliamos is incredibly thoughtful. We were sent home with a box of local treats such as olive oil and oregano (in carry-on proportions), to let you take a slice of Kefalonia home with you. The recipe for the orange cake was also sent to my inbox. I spent the rest of the summer trying to recreate the cocktail with cucumber syrup, honey and lemon juice — it’s safe to say it didn’t taste quite the same in East London, as it does in this magical corner of Greece.
