Setting

Lavender-scented hillside

Is it possible to ever tire of looking out over the cerulean sea-meets-sky vistas at the Eliamos Villas Hotel & Spa? We doubt it. But it’s not just the spectacular views that are easy on the eye here – there’s a collection of beautifully styled villas too, that open to their own sun-drenched terrace, each with a shimmering pool. Both the hotel’s spa and restaurant draw inspiration and ingredients from the island, and whether it's during a morning massage or evening meal, you’ll always find your gaze drawn back to the dreamy panoramas of this elevated hillside hotel.

More details

Rates include breakfast. For July and August there is a five-night minimum stay.

Also

If you fancy getting your sizzle on, you can arrange a barbecue to be set up on your terrace.

At the hotel

Outdoor gym, free loaner bikes, spa, 24-hour reception. In rooms: Jacuzzi or private pool, smart TV, coffee machine, tea-making kit, free bottled water, bathrobes and slippers, pillow menu, pool towels, turndown service, and air-conditioning.

Our favourite rooms

The Eliamos Three Bedroom Villa is a charming crashpad (the largest of all accommodation options here, and a rare seven-sleeper in Kefalonia) with its own frgrant garden and private saltwater pool set on-high for maximum sea views. And we were also particularly drawn to the Elia One Bedroom Two Storey Villa, with an elevated duplex design that provides particularly dramatic views from the upstairs without the trouble of leaving your bed.

Poolside

The hotel’s main saltwater infinity pool is lined with plump cushioned sunloungers where you can swoon over the Ionian Sea in extra comfort.

Spa

Pummelling and pampering take place in two spa treatment rooms where you can choose from a menu of massages using regional and organic products. There’s also an outdoor spa pool to unwind even further in afterwards.

Packing tips

Bring a copy of Captain Corelli's Mandolin. The film of the book was shot entirely on the island so you’ll be immersed from the start.

Also

One of the hotel’s suites has been adapted for the use of mobility-impaired guests.

Children

Two- and three-bedroom villas allow for families with kids, and cots are available free of charge. However, the scene is more geared towards couples and there’s nothing aimed at little Smiths.

Sustainability efforts

The hotel goes above and beyond. Key cards, gym equipment and even bicycles are made from wood. Refillable water bottles are given on arrival, all plastic, glass bottles and cooking oil are recycled, and much of their energy is solar. They even support a turtle-conservation programme on the island.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Any table on the outside terrace at dusk gives you front-row seats to sigh-worthy Ionian sunsets while you dine.

Dress Code

Earthy chic and a touch of sparkle to match the scene.

Hotel restaurant

The hotel’s Eliamos Restaurant opens first for breakfast, serving a healthy-and-hearty selection, including plentiful vegetarian and vegan options, to kick-start your day. You’ll have Mediterranean flavours with a modern twist for lunch and dinner, prepared with ingredients sourced from local farmers and small producers. Most dishes are unpretentious Kefalonian fare centred around island-grown vegetables, fish netted daily from the Ionian Sea, and herbs freshly plucked from the hotel’s own garden.

Hotel bar

There’s a small indoor café-bar next to the restaurant, perfect for a mid-morning coffee, and come evening most guests like to gather around the poolside bar for pre-dinner cocktails while the sun sinks dramatically into the sea.

Last orders

You can order drinks and snacks until midnight.

Room service

From breakfast-in-bed to late-night nibbles, there’s a 24-hour separate room-service menu available around the clock (for an extra €10 charge).

Address
Eliamos Villas Hotel & Spa
Livathou
Kefalonia
28100
Greece

Eliamos Villas Hotel & Spa is located on the southern corner of the Ionian Island of Kefalonia off the west coast of Greece.

Planes

You can fly direct to Kefalonia Airport from several hubs around the UK, including Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester. Alternatively, flights regularly connect from Athens. It’s then around a half-hour drive to the hotel.

Automobiles

Kefalonia’s the largest of the Ionian islands, so hiring a car is the best way to explore. A word of advice: some of the hairpin turns on mountain roads can be a little hairy for the less-experienced driver. The hotel provides free private parking.

Other

Getting to the island by boat from the mainland is easy and relatively quick, not to mention rather scenic. Ferries regularly depart from the ports of Patras or Kyllini in western Greece and take between one-and-a-half to three hours.

Worth getting out of bed for

As tempting as it is to hole up in your villa and gaze over the sea, there’s plenty to tease you out of your hideaway. Regular yoga and pilates sessions draw the more fitness-inclined out for a morning flex, as does the sea-facing outdoor gym which includes state-of-the-art part-wood Nohrd bikes and rowers. When you’re ready to venture beyond the hotel’s scenic grounds, a short amble downhill leads you to a secluded pebble cove with gin-clear water. In fact you can find several small quiet beaches such as Avithos or Trapezaki within strolling distance of the hotel – the hotel’s loaner bikes are also a good way to get there. For somewhere a little livelier, the scenic Makris Gialos beach, close to the capital Argostoli, is a 15-minute drive and you can visit some of the island’s other quaint towns en route. In the cooler spring and autumn months, you might be tempted to explore the hiking trails in and around Ainos National Park, including Kefalonia’s highest peak with 360-degree panoramas around the whole island.

Local restaurants

One of the best waterside dining experiences you’ll find close by is at the Waterway Restaurant, its amphitheatre-style layout overlooking Klimatsias Beach. The fish-focused menu offers a broad selection of market-fresh seafood, from local prawns to swordfish scampi, together with plentiful mezze options and grilled cheeses. Decked out like a traditional taverna, family-run To Enetiko is another top seaside option with budget-friendly prices and authentic Greek homestyle cooking.

Local bars

Visitors out to party should certainly look elsewhere, though one of the liveliest beach bars in the area is Waikiki on Lourdata Beach. Summer nights see DJs spin dancefloor fillers to draw the holidaymaker crowds. A bit closer and a bit mellower is the Cayos Beach Bar on Trapezaki Beach, where they play chilled-out Cuban tunes and serve pina coladas in real pineapples.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this laidback hotel in the Ionian Sea and unpacked their bottle of Robola and hand-painted tablecloth, a full account of their Greek island break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Eliamos Villas Hotel & Spa…

Startlingly blue skies, swoon-worthy seas and corners that seem untouched by the passing of time, there’s an undeniable magic common to all the Greek Islands – and Kefalonia is far from an exception. Although completed in 2023, Eliamos Villas Hotel & Spa manages to reflect this distinctly Hellenic sense of timelessness and natural beauty. Carefully landscaped grounds, brimming with native flora like local lavender, soaring cypresses and ancient olive trees, feel like a natural extension of the scenic hillside surroundings. With their thoughtful layouts and clever positioning, elegantly crafted villas make you feel part of the landscape and simultaneously blissfully secluded. From your bed to your private pool, everything is perfectly aligned to make the most of the hotel’s breathtaking sea-meets-sky panoramas. Of course when you’re ready to emerge, there’s spa pampering, poolside cocktails, and tucked-away coves you can stroll down to while barely breaking a sweat. All rather magical indeed.
