Poolside

Waterbabies will be in seventh heaven, since each villa has a private plunge pool; guests can also dip into the main pool by Lofos restaurant. Not to mention Eagles Palace’s pool – and the private beach.

Spa

Guests can use the spa at Eagles Palace, where nimble-knuckled masseuses dish out fragrant Elemis rubs, scrubs, facials and more. The spa has three treatment rooms; you can also be pampered under a pavilion on the beach or in your villa. Recline in the steam bath or sauna, swim in the indoor-outdoor spa pool, or sling mud – in the best possible fashion – in a rhassoul chamber. For deep pampering, opt for a lengthy spa ritual or a day package. The small fitness centre has TechnoGym equipment and personal trainers on request, and free yoga, pilates and aqua aerobics classes are held frequently.

Packing tips

Bring multiple swimwear choices for the multiple pools, plus scent worthy of a Greek god or goddess. Our tip? Diptyque Philosykos, which smells divine.

Pet‐friendly

Little Smiths of all ages are more than welcome; cots and extra beds for under-15s are free. Babysitting can be arranged (€20 an hour; book at least three hours ahead). Parents will be very grateful for the excellent kids club (seasonal) at Eagles Palace.

Activities

Parents will be cracking open the ouzo on learning that their little Smiths can enjoy the legion activities at Eagles Palace; with pools, aquatic adventuring, sandcastles, and action-packed clubs, adults can eke out a good chunk of alone time here. However, beach barbecues, excursions to local villages and spacious family bungalows with private pools foster quality time, too.

Eagles Palace’s private beach is the star of this resort. If sunbathing seems too sedate, pick your aquatic adventures in the watersports pavilion, or play in the two sociable swimming pools. Take to the tennis court as a family, or leave little ones to be entertained in the bright and lively kids clubs, which will allow parents a little time to be buffed and scrubbed in a couples treatment room at the spa.

Eagles Villas’ indoor and outdoor pools are both family-friendly, but unsupervised, so keep an eagle eye (ahem) on waterbabies.

Meals

Lofos has highchairs, a kids' menu, cutlery for littlies and bibs. The chefs are happy to adapt menu items to tots' tastes.

Babysitting can be arranged for €20 an hour (book at least three hours ahead).

Hotel restaurant

Lofos is the Villas’ relaxed fine-dining restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Opt for half-board to make the most of the chef’s excellent Greek creations, many of which star seafood from the Aegean. Steak-loving Eleonas is designed for alfresco meals; it’s open from June (weather permitting). You can also request private dining in your villa or make the most of Eagles Palace’s clutch of dining and wining options (fishy, beachside Armyra was our hands-down favourite).

Hotel bar

Sit out on the terrace in one of Cabin bar’s handsome wicker chairs, survey the Halkidiki horizon and quaff local wine or a delicious cocktail. The Bergamot Dew features Greek brandy, bergamot liqueur, orange and lemon juice, sugar syrup and pomegranate marmalade, for example.

Last orders

Breakfast is served in Lofos until 10.30am; dinner til 11pm. Thirsts can be quenched at Cabin Bar until 1am.

Eagles Villas sits beside sister property Eagles Palace, near the village of Ouranoupolis. Any closer to the Aegean and you’d be sleeping with the fishes (in a non-mafiosi way).

Planes

Thessaloniki ‘Macedonia’ Airport is the closest international hub, a 90-minute drive from the hotel. Smith24 can sort flights and transfers too; just give them a call.

Automobiles

A car will help for easy exploration of the rural surrounds; on-site parking is free. From the airport, follow the A25 to Agiou Oros Road to reach the hotel; the path is surrounded by dense foliage, so keep an eye out for the car park. The Smith24 Team can help with car hire, if needed.

Other

Eagles Palace, a short stroll from the villas, has a helipad. Helicopter transfers can be arranged on request. If you’re island-hopping, ferries frequently sail to and from the port at Thessaloniki to Heraklion, Mykonos and Santorini.

Worth getting out of bed for

You can expect to while away much of your time on Eagles Palace’s Blue Flag, golden sandy beach, a short stroll from Eagles Villas (you can hail a buggy, if walking seems too pedestrian). Towels and day-beds are free; parasol tables have a built-in buzzer for drinks service. Snorkelling and scuba sessions can be arranged at the on-site Padi dive centre, too. Guests can also be ferried to Eagles Island Club, a private stretch of sunlounger-dotted sand on diminutive and uninhabited Drenia island, for some seriously secluded sunbathing.

Hire a small self-rowed boat or a skipper-tended yacht from the watersports pavilion to glide along the coast past Mount Athos, cleave the aquamarine waters of the Sithonia Peninsula or sail to beach-blessed Vourvourou and Ammouliani islands; the family who own the hotel are sailing enthusiasts, so can point you in the right direction if needed.

Ouranoupolis village – a five-minute drive south from the hotel – has Byzantine monuments and pretty beaches. Ierissos Village is a 15-minute drive away, where ancient Serbian monastery Hilandar has intact colourful frescoes and the cultural centre shows 3D movies on a 50-square-metre screen. The resort can also arrange excursions to Platanorema Farm (+30 (0)2372 300386) or Petralona Cave.

Local restaurants

Head into the little village of Ouranopolis and pick from one of the humble fish tavernas that dot the waterfront. For similar seafood thrills, pay a trip to the village of Ierissos and pick from one of the cheap-as-chips restaurants there.

Bird’s nests don’t get much better than Eagles Villas, which is certainly worthy of a golden eagle and his clan. You won’t actually have to share this Halkidiki hideaway with guests of the feathered variety – unless visitors come with boas in tow – but you will get bird’s-eye views of Halkidiki from the hotel’s lofty hillside perch. Can eagles swim? Who knows, but if you can, you’ll love the private plunge pool attached to each villa (some boast private gardens, too). Additional incentives to fly here include the rather lovely Lofos restaurant, the brilliant staff and the holiday’s worth of distractions at Eagles Palace, the hotel’s original offering, which shares its peaceful perch with the stylish villas.
