Packing tips

It’s unlikely you’re going to be spending much time out of a swimsuit at Domes White Coast Milos, so be sure to bring an array of options (human-size scallop shell, optional).

Hotel restaurant

Makris restaurant spreads out right to the edge of the water, with neighbouring islands and rock formations visible on the horizon. Chef Petros Dimas's Mediterranean menu includes classic Greek dishes such as giouvetsi, a beef stew with orzo, elevated with prawn broth and fennel oil, and roast pork with peaches and grape molasses. At breakfast, guests can choose from Greek and American favourites.

At Makris bar, go all out with cocktails, Champagne and a selection of carefully chosen nibbles.

Last orders

Breakfast hours are 8am to 11am. Food is served at the restaurant all day, until 10pm. The bar facilitates morning cocktails by opening at 11am (all the way until midnight).

Milos is the southwesternmost Cycladic isle in the Aegean and the hotel is on its northeasterly shores, close to Sarakiniko and a short walk from Mytakas Beach.

Planes

The airport on Milos is only served by domestic flights from Athens, so you’ll have to connect there – or be sensible and arrive by sea from one of the neighbouring islands. If you have jetted in, the hotel is a 10-minute drive from the airport. Hotel transfers can be arranged on request, for €35 each way for up to four guests.

Automobiles

A car (and let’s be real: boat) will definitely come in handy for exploring Milos’s fortress towns, fishing villages and quiet coves. The hotel has a car park.

Other

Ferries drop anchor in Milos’s Adamas port from Piraeus in Athens and other islands, including Paros, Folegandros and Santorini. The hotel has a helipad for incoming choppers.

Worth getting out of bed for

Your private pool-enhanced pad may be doing its best to tempt you to stay on your terrace at Domes White Coast, but Milos has much to coax you out – including trips to lunar landscapes (Sarakiniko), fishing villages (Pollonia and Klima), Venetian forts (Plaka) and swims in sea caves (Papafragas). Enlist the help of Excellent Yachting’s Captain Mike to take you to beaches that can only be reached from the water (or a precarious cliff-edge ladder) and to the island’s geologist-pleasing rock formations, including the bright white caves and rocks of Kleftiko. A boat trip is also the best way to see the neighbouring Polyegos (literally: ‘many goats’), the largest uninhabited island in the Med (what it lacks in humans, it makes up for in sure-footed wild mammals). Closer to home, the sandy shores of Mytakas Beach are a five-minute walk from your suite. 

Local restaurants

Technically on the other side of the island, but more than worth the seven-minute drive for its use of exclamation marks alone, O! Hamos! is one of the most traditional tavernas on Milos (with a handwritten menu in every possible language). Also in Adamas, Mikros Apoplous has a prime perch on the edge of the water and a seafood-heavy menu to match the setting. A short drive east, the town of Pollonia also has lots of excellent seafood restaurants, including Armenaki and Yialos.

Local bars

The hilltop-fortress town of Plaka is the place to be for sunset – especially with a cocktail courtesy of the obliging bar staff at Verina or Utopia.

Santorini may get all of the Cycladic sunset attention, but Helios doesn’t like to discriminate – they’re actually pretty spectacular on Milos, too. This is especially good news if you’ve booked a room at west-facing Domes White Coast, aka a front-row seat to sunset (and your own pool to enjoy it in). The hotel’s expansive terrace is also a prime sundowner spot, as is a sunlounger by the sea-edge main pool. Milos – hitherto most famous for the discovery of the namesake statue of Venus – has much to please the average geologist, including caves, minerals and volcanic sand, but its most startling landscape is the moon-matching Sarakiniko – a miniature version of which can be found right here on White Coast’s shoreline. As if you didn’t have enough swimming options (including pretending to be the Nirvana baby in your private glass-walled pool), the sandy beach of Mytakas is steps from your suite. All that’s missing is your scallop shell.
