There may be no actual rotundas at Domes Novos Santorini, but what it lacks in rounded roofs, it makes up for with (geometric) standalone suites, cool, calm interiors, dreamily dusky exteriors and a prime setting a minute’s drive away from Oia. Every room at Domes Novos Santorini has its own pool, but most things in life can be improved with an Aegean view — so try to snag a sea-facing suite.

Poolside

There are two outdoor freshwater pools at the hotel, open from 10am to 6pm, one of which is child-friendly (though leave the inflatable unicorn at home).

Spa

At the Soma Spa, pan pipes lead you to a state of serenity before you’ve even changed into your robe. There’s a third pool here, with lantern-like spotlights, a hot tub and a sauna. Have your sunglasses ready for when you emerge after your Elemis treatment into Helios’ bright white rays.

Packing tips

Athleisurewear to join the sunrise yoga or a Pilates class at the gym; a copy of Nikos Kazantzakis’ Zorba the Greek to make you love the country even more; and a skill set in need of a refresh — be ready to sign up to one of the hotel’s artistic-talent-enhancing lessons.

Air-conditioning cuts out when windows and terrace doors are opened, there are solar energy and heat pumps in use, and the gardens have an automated irrigation system.

Hotel restaurant

There are two restaurants at the hotel, a casual poolside bar and breakfast and lunch spot, and the smarter Maitr and Margarita for sunset-shaded suppers with an unforgettable view. At the latter, guests select their ‘culinary journey’ and embark on an odyssey that might feature amberjack with Jerusalem artichokes and peas, sea-bass with coriander and pear, or lamb with grape and sorrel.

Domes Novos Santorini is on the supermodel Cycladic isle’s northernmost tip, just outside the much-photographed town of Oia.

Planes

Unlike many harder-to-reach Greek isles, Santorini has its own airport, with direct flights from the UK available during the summer season. The drive from the airport to the hotel should take around half an hour; transfers cost €80 each way.

Automobiles

A car will come in handy for exploring the rest of the island, but if you’re only planning on exploring as far as Oia, you won’t need wheels — the hotel shuttle will whisk you back and forth. Free parking awaits hotel guests, though.

Other

If you’re hopping around the Cyclades by ferry, you’ll drop anchor at Santorini’s port — a transfer to the hotel costs €90, one-way.

Worth getting out of bed for

Since you’ll be staying so close to Oia, you can beat the blue-dome-hungry crowds and head to the flagstone-paved streets nice and early, before the influencers and their photoshoot-ready flowing dresses arrive. It’s not hard to see why this town is so popular, but it does get rather busy. Santorini is one of Greece’s leading wine producers, with its output helped along by its volcanic soil – wine tastings and a tour of the old-school equipment await at Venetsanos Winery, which has been busy producing bottles of assyrtiko since 1947. From the inland village of Pyrgos, if it’s not too hot, you can hike up to the Prophet Elias Monastery, the island’s highest point, for views that’ll make you swoon. If your room’s plunge pool isn’t cutting it on the lengths front, head south to the black-sand shores of Perivolos and Perissa Beach for a swim instead. The concierge will be able to assist with ceramic, sculpting and wood-carving classes, cookery courses and sailing trips, too. And anyone in search of the Lost City of Atlantis would do well to visit the archaeological site of Akrotiri…

Local restaurants

In Oia, Gefsis serves up meals of classic Greek dishes (shrimp saganaki, Naxos potatoes with tarama and lots of seafood) with a side order of unforgettable sunset views – and there’s a separate menu for vegans, too. The meze flows at Melitini, an all-Greek venture by a former banker (Pantelis) and his childhood friend (Takis), who left the bright lights of Athens behind to set up shop in Oia. The finest local produce and Hellenic ingredients can be enjoyed with a view of the caldera up on the rooftop terrace. And Oia is especially photogenic as far as dining destinations go, but things get especially eye-popping over at Kastro…

Local bars

For the buzziest nightlife on the island, head down to Thira, the capital, and locate Tango or PK Cocktail Bar for sundowners with a view.

Eschewing the dazzling whitewash favoured by the hotels of the Greek isles, Domes Novos Santorini opts instead for a dusky terracotta for its standalone suites and assorted buildings. The hotel has been designed to resemble a typical Greek village, with a labyrinth of streets, hidden corners, small squares throughout for guests to stop at and enjoy the view — there’s even an agora for some impromptu epic planning or civic discussion. You might also pass some micro-vineyards planted among the rooms or the organic garden, which grows essential Greek ingredients such as peppers and white aubergine. Sunsets overlook the Aegean rather than the caldera, but are guaranteed to be free of jostling and selfie sticks. It has all of the facilities of a much bigger resort, including a spa, a kids’ club and various pools, but it manages to feel like a boutique retreat all the same. Good things really do come in small sizes.
