Welcome. There's plenty to entertain kids in Manchester city centre, though no specific facilities for Little Smiths at the hotel. Two-bedroom suites can accommodate small families.

Sustainability efforts

Manchester may not be Marbella, but that hasn’t stopped the plucky Dakota Hotel from going down the renewable energy route and installing solar panels. LED lighting with timers and motion sensors helps to conserve that energy and much of the produce used in The Grill is sourced locally. The Dakota has also made inroads into the reduction of single-use plastics and is aiming to banish these from the hotel altogether.

Sports shirts are discouraged in The Grill, so leave your Man City/United kit for the football terraces and go smart-casual for steak night instead.

Hotel restaurant

There’s an old-school American feel about The Grill, with its cosy tables, dark woods, leather banquettes and velvet cushions. Hollywood-style photos and vintage artworks adorn the walls, but it’s the steaks you’ll still be talking about long after you leave: New York strips, wagyu fillets and chateaubriand served with all the classic sauces, and sides including truffle and parmesan fries, soy-glazed cauliflower and a leek and Gruyère gratin. Pro-tip: book the Sunday roast if you’re there on the weekend. For something a little more relaxed, The Terrace is also open for brunch, lunch and small plates between May and September. 

Hotel bar

Festooned with foliage and overlooking the canal, The Terrace Bar is a veritable rooftop oasis. It’s open seasonally from May to September for drinks, cocktails and small plates in the sun. Should the fickle Manchester weather fail to play ball, the fully retractable roof, heaters and blankets ensure rain never stops play. Inside, The Bar strikes a similar tone to The Grill, with its own champagne bar and impressive cigar humidor to boot.

Breakfast is from 6.30amto 10am (until 10.30am on weekends), lunch from noon to 2.30pm and dinner from 6pm to 10pm.

The daytime room service menu runs between noon and 10pm; a reduced night-time menu of salads and small plates operates thereafter.

A modern city pied-à-terre that backs onto the Rochdale Canal, Dakota Hotel Manchester lies a short stroll from the Piccadilly Gardens, Chinatown and the trendy Northern Quarter.

Planes

Manchester Airport is 10 miles south of the hotel, under 30 minutes by cab or public transport. A taxi costs around £35 one-way.

Trains

The city’s central transport hub, Manchester Piccadilly station, is a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. Regular trains connect to and from the airport, and there are services to other major UK cities including Birmingham, London and Glasgow.

Automobiles

Manchester’s compact centre and solid public transport system, including buses, trams and trains, means you’ll have little need for your own set of wheels. However, you can, of course, rent vehicles at the airport. Dakota Manchester’s valet parking service costs £45 a day and should be booked in advance.

Worth getting out of bed for

Manchester is one of the UK’s great cultural heavyweights, giving the world The Smiths, Sir Ian McKellen, LS Lowry and the Gallagher brothers, among others. Such diverse artistry is writ large in the nearby Northern Quarter, where guided walking tours take in street-art murals including larger-than-life tributes to George Floyd and David Bowie, plus dazzling birdlife, political art statements and, of course, Manchester’s beloved worker-bee emblem. For something a little more formal, try the nearby Manchester Art Gallery or hop the tram out to The Lowry in Salford for LS’s distinctive industrial landscapes and signature stylised matchstick men. 
 
You’ll find plenty of live music within easy reach of Dakota Hotel Manchester, too. When not playing host to Man City thrillers, the Etihad Stadium attracts big-name acts; or head towards Albert Hall for (slightly) more intimate pop, soul and alternative rock shows.  

Local restaurants

Proximity to Manchester's top nightlife and entertainment spots, including Ancoats, the Northern Quarter and Spinningfields mean you’re spoiled for choice. Head to Mana in the Northern Quarter for an Asian-inspired tasting menu with optional paired wines in an intimate open space that removes all the usual barriers between chefs and guests. Just off Piccadilly, Bundobust (slogan: ‘too much spicy’) is a more casual affair, with Indian street food, craft ales and cocktails served to communal tables in a skylit basement space. Or saunter to Spinningfields for Japanese sushi, sashimi, seafood and more at the wildly OTT and somewhat dubiously monikered Sexy Fish. 

Local cafés

Global coffee chains proliferate around these parts, meaning you’re never far from your next matcha latte or double shot gingerbread Frappuccino. But those in the know get their morning joe at Second City Coffee, a cool, plant-filled space on Piccadilly, five minutes from the hotel, or from Black Sheep Coffee on St Peter’s Square. 

Local bars

There’s no shortage of watering holes in the nearby Northern Quarter. But if you relish a challenge, seek out the elusive Behind Closed Doors on Oldham Street. A world of colourful cocktails and eye-popping neon light awaits behind its otherwise unassuming black exterior (buzz for entry). Just around the corner, Matt & Phred’s offers a rather more louche take on Manchester hedonism, with live jazz, pizza and daily happy hours.

Dakota Hotel Manchester is that rarest of creatures: a city-centre hotel with soul. Design-conscious interiors by Amanda Rosa mean there’s always something interesting or quirky to look at — striking photography, exposed ducts, giant ceramic urns, a highly realistic dog named Chester who greets you enthusiastically in the lobby — and rooms bridge the gap between the hotel high life and simple home comforts. Penthouse suites lift the whole experience with sunken Jacuzzi tubs, emperor beds and wraparound balconies with panoramic views.
