Our favourite rooms

The Como Suite is the penthouse showstopper, with floor-to-ceiling colonnaded windows gazing out across the Gulf of St Tropez, but almost every suite has sea views. The Two Bedroom Suite will work well for families — the second bedroom can be made up with a queen-size bed.

Poolside

Framed by a lush palm grove and the sea, the 25-metre pool (open 9am to 8.30pm) stretches towards the beach at the foot of the hill. Recline under a sunshine-yellow parasol, admire the view across to St Tropez and make use of the all-day pool service — we’re starting with a limoncello spritz.

Spa

Wellness is the ace card of any Como stay and Le Beauvallon is no exception, with treatments that draw on traditional Asian therapies. A brightening turmeric facial or Ayurvedic massage will make quick work of restoring your glow; to bolster it further, join the free yoga sessions that take place in the studio or sea-gazing gardens every morning from Wednesday to Sunday, or hit the 24-hour fitness area. The spa is open daily from 10am to 7pm (out-of-hours treatments can be arranged in-room, with advance notice and for an extra fee).

Packing tips

A silk hair scarf or Panama hat keep the ’do safe as you coast across the bay to St Tropez, and a Colette novel to spend a couple of hours with at a pavement café once you get there.

The hotel’s contemporary art collection is displayed throughout the grounds and interiors, and architecture fans will get a kick from Beauvallon Sur Mer’s dining room, which is housed in the 2002 Ito-Balmond Serpentine Pavilion.

You'll be gazing across the bay wherever you choose at Beauvallon Sur Mer, but the tables for two right by the water’s edge are particularly tempting.

Dress Code

Keep things relatively smart for Beauvallon Sur Mer — if you’re coming straight from the beach, cover up your swimsuit with something effortless and billowy.

Hotel restaurant

It’s hard not to feel cheerful when greeted by the azure and sunny yellow palette of Beauvallon Sur Mer by Yannick Alléno, the hotel’s beach club dining spot. That joie de vivre is only boosted by resplendent sea views, and an Asian-Mediterranean menu devised by the restaurant’s namesake superstar chef. Sushi platters, flame-grilled steaks and sharing plates from pissaladière with curry spiced onions to sea bass crudo with Thai green papaya are all underpinned by organic, seasonal Provençal produce. Let alfresco lunches slide into apéros and sunset dinners, with the DJ setting a laidback score and St Tropez twinkling across the bay. 

That said, there’s no call to stir if you’ve found your perfect spot poolside or on the beach — salads, sushi, sandwiches and an appropriately expansive range of cocktails (frozen and otherwise) can be served straight to your sunlounger (available from 11am to 6.30pm between April and August). 

Breakfast is served in the Winter Garden, a light-flooded conservatory, or out on the terrace. A buffet breakfast is included in your stay, but à la carte dishes from the wellness-focused menu developed at Como Shambhala are available for a supplement, too.

Hotel bar

The beach club bar Beauvallon Sur Mer Lounge and Rooftop is set in a striking rotunda, meaning that from upstairs you'll have panoramic views of the Gulf of St Tropez. They pair excellently with a lavender-infused margarita, selected Mediterranean morsels from the restaurant menu and, during the summer, DJ sessions till well past sunset. 

Back at the main building, the Riviera Terrace is a quieter, alfresco option. Graze on panisses dipped in garlicky rouille, split a bottle of Provençal rosé and gaze out across the gardens to the sea.

Breakfast is served at the Winter Garden from 7.30am to 10.30am. Lunch at Beauvallon Sur Mer is from noon to 3pm, and dinner from 7pm to 11pm. Beauvallon Lounge and Rooftop pours from noon to midnight. The Riviera Terrace is open from 5pm to midnight.

Worth getting out of bed for

On this hallowed terroir, a vineyard tour and tasting should be high on your agenda — Fondugues-Pradugues is a family-run, organic favourite. Walking tours of the hilltop villages that dot the region uncover classically Provençal scenes — honeyed mediaeval buildings and cobbled streets giving way to sparkling sea views — and there are coastal trails to be explored on a bicycle or Vespa tour. In St Tropez, contemporary art gallery viewings can be arranged by the hotel concierge, as can a visit to Place des Lices market (every Tuesday and Saturday morning) to pick up some regional specialities. When you feel the pull of the bay, jet-skiing and paddleboarding are on the cards, as is a guided snorkel or (for certified divers) a scuba session. Keep your heart racing with a helicopter ride to reveal the patchwork of vineyards, hills and cobalt sea that define the Côte d’Azur. Or set a course for hidden coves, pop the champagne and stay sailing till sunset on a private yacht charter.

Local restaurants

Rustic Provençal flavours are given a contemporary polish at Caprice des Deux, a family-run bistro tucked down a romantic side street in St Tropez. It’s worth venturing down the coast to hilltop mediaeval village Ramatuelle for many reasons, not least of them Chez Camille’s celebrated bouillabaisse (made the traditional way — wood-fired and rich with just-caught seafood). In St Tropez’s star-studded haute cuisine scene, La Vague d’Or stands out thanks to Arnaud Donckele’s poetic tasting menus, which artfully capture the spirit of the French coast.

Local cafés

Mimosa is a wholesome neighbourhood café where you can pick up cookies and handmade ceramics alongside your coffee.

Local bars

Once you’ve toured the cellars at organic estate Château des Marres, wend your way to the wine bar for perfectly paired tapas and a game of pétanque. Bagatelle is a high-energy beach club that’s long been a favoured haunt of the St Tropez jet set — you can always retreat to Le Beauvallon’s calmer shores if the paps come for you.

If the walls of Como Le Beauvallon could talk, they’d tell of a leisurely century under the Riviera sun, filled with sea swims, dry martinis and sojourns into St Tropez. Over the years, the hotel has been host to a dazzling cast of characters, from Colette and F Scott Fitzgerald to an Audrey Hepburn film shoot. But this is not a place defined by headlines and hedonism — instead, Le Beauvallon has long been a refuge from the noisier Riviera scene.

Today, it’s a similar story.
