Casa Telmo is in the centre of historic Mahón.

Mahón airport is four kilometres away (a seven-minute drive); contact Smith24 to book your flights and arrange transfers.

Hiring a car is a good way to explore the remote beaches of the island. The hotel has its own spots in a shared car park close by, which you can use for €10 a day (there’s remote-control access to let you in and out).

Worth getting out of bed for

Casa Telmo is designed to feel like a home, and the staff go out of their way to help you feel at home on the rest of the island, too. They’re happy to offer recommendations on the best local shops and vistas.

Hire a car to reach some of the prettier stretches of sand: it’s nearly impossible to go wrong choosing beach coves on Menorca, and each local has a favourite. Beautiful and remote Cala Mitjaneta is accessible by a quick hike from popular pine-dotted Cala Mitjana. Named for its crystalline turquoise water, famous Cala Turqueta has a beach bar and lifeguards.

Local restaurants

Grab a barstool at nearby Ses Forquilles, a three-minute walk from the hotel, for tapas and wine. Dishes include stuffed olives, bacalao and fried eggs with foie gras and truffles. Near the marina, Jàgaro is as bustling as the port, with a busy terrace and seafood specialties. Try tartares, lobster and octopus, all ideally paired with local wine. South of Mahón in Sant Lluis, Binifadet is a vineyard growing several varietals for crisp whites, red blends and icy rosés. Order a bottle at the on-site restaurant to pair with local dishes like fideuá (vermicelli-based paella), suckling big and local beef with piquillo peppers.

Local bars

Order a spritz from within a cave at Cova d’en Xoroi by Cala en Porter. Built into the cliff, the bar and dance club has sublime sunset views, and nightly parties that last until dawn.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this island hotel in Spain and unpacked their sandals and spirits, a full account of their beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Casa Telmo in Menorca…

Settle into the homey expanse of Casa Telmo, a cleverly decorated five-room hotel in a converted historic mansion, right in the centre of Mahón. The space was designed as the home for globe-trotting imaginary explorer Telmo, who the designers envisioned had roamed the world before settling down in Menorca. Each room pays tribute to a different destination to which he might have traveled – including an African cottage and a British living room – and all nooks are stocked with smartly chosen books and trinkets to further the intrigue. So, take a cue from Telmo and head off in pursuit of uncharted beaches and crannies throughout Menorca: the hotel’s attentive staff are happy to help unlock Menorca’s secret treasures and keep the wanderlust going. And once you’re back, mix cocktails from the honesty bar and dream up your own stories about the adventures to come.
