Up on the sixth floor, Restaurante Casa Luz is a suntrap of warm timber, wicker and jaunty scalloped parasols, with Barcelona’s turreted rooftops almost close enough to clink glasses with. Chef Tomás Abellán’s Mediterranean menu keeps things local and changes with the seasons, from tomato tartare topped with nasturtium leaves to grilled yellowtail with sherry vinaigrette.

Hotel bar

Come sundown, the restaurant slips easily into rooftop-bar mode. Order a bottle of natural wine out to the terrace and watch Barcelona turn golden from your sixth-floor perch.

Planes

Barcelona-El Prat Airport is around 25 minutes away by car. Casa Luz can arrange private transfers, with prices depending on your party size, luggage and travel dates.

Trains

Long-distance trains arrive at Barcelona Sants. From there, take the L3 metro to Universitat; Casa Luz is just a couple of minutes away on foot.

Automobiles

There's no parking at Casa Luz, but you can leave your wheels at the Saba car park by Plaça Catalunya, around a 10-minute walk away.

Worth getting out of bed for

Casa Luz puts you within gallery-hopping distance of some of Barcelona’s artiest institutions. Start in El Raval, where the Richard Meier-designed MACBA majors in contemporary art and the neighbouring CCCB tackles big ideas spanning cities, politics, technology and the climate. In the other direction, Passeig de Gràcia supplies the architectural heavyweights: Gaudí’s fantastical Casa Batlló and wave-fronted Casa Milà, plus the Museu Tàpies, housed in a Modernista building by Lluís Domènech i Montaner and a trove of the namesake artist’s works. 

For a change of medium, browse the galleries, design stores and independent shops threading the surrounding Eixample streets, or head downhill to the Gothic Quarter for mediaeval lanes, Barcelona Cathedral and Plaça del Rei. 

Local restaurants

Bar Cañete is a lively, counter-lined institution in El Raval, where seafood comes fresh from Catalan fish markets and seasonal produce from local growers. In Gràcia, tiny Berbena is worth the short taxi ride for an intimate dinner (in two sittings each evening): come for deceptively simple, produce-first plates, natural wines and a convivial atmosphere. Closer to home, Besta Barcelona brings together Catalan and Galician influences in a pared-back Eixample dining room, with seafood at the heart of the menu. 

Local cafés

For a leafy breather from the city streets, Les Filles pairs a plant-filled garden setting with specialty coffee from local roastery SlowMov and a flavour-packed brunch menu spanning eggs Benedict, house-made granola and organic pastries. 

Local bars

Natural wine devotees should make for Tiberi Bar in Poble-sec, where a bottle-green marble counter sets the scene for small-producer pours and plates designed for sharing. Over in El Born, Bar Pimentel bills itself as a neighbourhood tapas bar with a wine cellar worthy of its food. Pull up a stool for a few gildas, croquetas and oysters.

Casa Luz Barcelona has a naturally sunny disposition. Clever positioning means daylight finds its way into every room, where Catalan designer Lázaro Rosa-Violán — whose local portfolio spans Soho House Barcelona to a contemporary intervention at Gaudí’s Casa Batlló — brings retro lines and natural textures into a palette of ochre, caramel and cream. The golden ratio here is equal parts good looks and easy living. Most bedrooms tote a light-catching balcony, with Sunset Terrace Suites adding even more outdoor space to soak up the Tibidabo views. 

The address makes light work of Barcelona, putting galleries, Gaudí and excellent tapas within strolling distance. The hotel’s rooftop may prove your only navigational problem: once cocktails arrive and the skyline starts glowing, downstairs suddenly feels very far away.
