Our favourite rooms

All rooms have playful wallpaper and are named after members of Helena’s family. Suds soakers can sink into a tub in the Natalia or Lucho; the latter also has a private balcony with a bright blue hammock and a bijou breakfast table.

Packing tips

Bring your stretchy yoga kit – mats and other gear are supplied for you – for in-house sessions, which can be arranged on request.

Fruit and vegetable are grown in the courtyard garden, which is draped with climbing ivy and has twin indoor-outdoor terraces. On home-movie nights, films are projected on one of the garden’s walls and cosy blankets are handed out to guests.

Pet‐friendly

There’s no restaurant, but breakfast at Casa Legado is a bountiful buffet of fresh fruits and juices, granolas and oatmeal, homemade coconut yogurt, freshly baked bread, local egg dishes and rich coffee. Later in the day, picnic hampers can be put together on request.

There’s no bar, but you’re welcome to help yourself to the fully-stocked fridge in the sunny kitchen.

Planes

Aeropuerto Internacional El Dorado is 30 minutes away by car. Hotel transfers can be arranged for COP93,000 each way (you’ll get yours free as a Smith Extra).

Automobiles

There’s onsite parking at the hotel, but we’d ditch the self-drive route in favour of airport pick-up and the hotel’s upright bicycles.

Worth getting out of bed for

Borrow one of the hotel’s photogenic bikes and pedal your way around the neighbourhood, pour yourself a glass of wine and snuggle up by the fireplace, or relax with a movie night in the garden. Achy? Thai massages can be arranged on request. And if you fancy exploring further afield, the family also owns a bucolic farmhouse two hours outside Bogotá. Called Manqué in honour of Helena’s father, it's a cosy countryside cottage that’s well worth an overnight visit. A guide will whisk you away to the farm, stopping at local arepa shacks, markets and hidden gardens along the way.

Browse for bit of locally made bling – made from recycled silver – at Colombian-Pakistani jewellery shop Aysha Bilgrami or search through the tomes at Wilborada for something to read in the garden. Make your way to Italian-inspired ice cream shop Orso and grab a cinnamon ice cream cone, caramel cookie-dough milkshake or warm chocolate-chip cookie topped with a scoop; then if your sweet treat of choice is portable, you can ramble over to Plaza Bolivar, Bogotá’s main square.

 

 

Local restaurants

For brunch, order egg-based migas, ensalada de palmito and savoury corn arepas at Abasto; share a custard-y torta almojabana for dessert. For a mid-morning pick-me-up, swing around the corner to neighbourhood bakery Les Amis for a sampling of cakes and a fortifying cup of Colombian coffee. For dinner, carb-load with comfort food at Italian eatery 18 Scalini, which dishes out lemon-drizzled linguine with purple squid, Spaghetti alla carbonara and classic wood-fired pizzas. It’s a bit of a trek (20 minutes by car), but Andres DC is a date night favourite for good reason: part restaurant, part live entertainment venue, it guarantees you dinner and a show.

 

 

Local bars

Bundle away to wine and tapas bar Nueve for small plates and perfect pairings from a stash of more than 170 varieties of wine. Inspired by Prohibition-era speakeasies, it also has a stand-out cocktail menu for dapper chaps and dames.

Bogotá’s boutique stay Casa Legado lives up to its name (it’s Spanish for ‘legacy’). It’s a bright and homey stay with rooms inspired by various relatives of owner Helena, with sentimental momentos stylishly repurposed throughout. That ice-cream cart check-in desk? A childhood birthday gift. The bijou lego model of the hotel? An opening-day surprise constructed by a creative niece. 

After a peaceful night’s sleep, pull up a seat at the communal table in the Mad Hatter–meets-mid-century-mod breakfast room, where a tea-set-turned-chandelier hangs overhead and a dainty trolley of altitude-acclimatising teas waits in one corner. Tuck heartily into the freshly baked bread, tropical fruit juices, homemade granolas and aromatic cups of Colombian coffee: you’ll need your fuel for a day of exploring the neighbourhood by (borrowed from the house) bike. Too active for you? Ask Helena to arrange knot-relieving Thai massages or while away an afternoon with a holiday read on the covered terrace.
